“Heaven on Earth or anywhere else...”
Reviewed July 20, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Some places invoke a sense of beauty, some a sense of tranquility, some a sense of history, rarely do you ever receive the honor of them all. This is the place! We stayed for 6 days, with the perfect blend of charm, relaxation and truly breathtaking location. The grounds are incredible, with the pool area and dinner table as the highlights. The dinner table is a place your soul will love...

The stunningly converted and clearly exhaustive rehab of the buildings is worth the trip, but the view and gardens will be in your memories forever.

Everything was easy, and as it should be during a vacation. A hike of the "neighborhood" was astounding, refreshing and not too long that you get bored. Seeing the company you keep, as in the Four Seasons castle just up the road reminds you that you are really stealing the better vacation for the right price.

Also, a day trip to Tuscany was not stressful, just the right mix of not too far, and close enough not to be exhausted. The roads are typical Italian, so if you get stuck behind a truck, enjoy the scenery! This place is amazingly set in the mountains but so close to the beautiful lakes, just too cool.

Make sure you get the right info from the owners as they know the little gems nearby to enjoy a great meal.

We cannot recommend this place highly enough, but please book with caution, as we will be back next year, and don't want all the reservations taken.

The really really great:

Almost everything actually

The not so great:

Train is a bit far, but quickly forgotten when you arrive

Five stars, six if we could

Also, for those who cook, the local markets are out of a movie, just unreal :)

“vacations in paradise”
Reviewed March 6, 2014 for a stay in May 2013

I am very happy to recommend Villa Santa Caterina to worldwide vacationers. It is fabulously located in central Italy, in the heart of rustic and picturesque province of Umbria ('competitive' to Toscana) and within convenient outreach from Rome, Siena and Firenze. Its great location allows easy exploration of neighbouring places like Assisi, Gubbio and Spoleto, and other 'jewels in the crown' of the unique Umbria scenery.
But, the ' crux of the matter ' is its heavenly, particular, location, in seclusion of a small valley , 'patronized' by adjourning mountains. Looking out of your window (at the breathtaking and picturesque scenery), swimming in the villa's pool , or conversing with Marga and Vic (the property devoted and friendly caretakers) you feel that you have reached, and are ultimately part of paradise in heavens , and in Italy, at the same time.
Go for it :if you look for location for ' 'painting session' , intimacy in spending inspiring time with family/friends, or a base to explore in depth the unique Italian spirit and atmosphere.

“Breathtaking…true Italy”
Reviewed March 3, 2014 for a stay in May 2012

My husband and I stayed at Santa Caterina for a week during May for our wedding anniversary….from the moment we arrived we were swept away by how lovely the property was and how nicely it was maintained and renovated. From the gorgeous pool, to the spectacular garden with fresh lavender, sage and more, to the spacious, yet amazingly inviting and warm main house - the villa was perfect.

It was located perfectly between a lot of lovely towns (Deruta for pottery and shopping, Assisi for religious culture, Perugia for sightseeing , Gubbio for gorgeous views and a fun medieval vibe) and with a short ride it was easy to take day trips to experience all that Umbria had to offer. It even rained a bit while we were there and just sitting by the fire and reading on the comfy couch was like heaven. The best food we ate on the whole trip (and we started in Rome and ended in Florence and went to 5 star/Michelin restaurants in both) was by far just the fresh cheeses, sliced meats, tomato/cucumber salad and inexpensive wine on that hill overlooking the gorgeous landscapes.

“If you want a perfect vacation, go to Santa Caterina”
Reviewed February 26, 2014 for a stay in October 2013

Whether you are in the mood for romance, are in need of rest and relaxation, or are interested in immersing yourself in history, culture and culinary delights, Santa Caterina is the place for you. Photos cannot do justice to the beauty and tranquility of the property and its surroundings. I would have been perfectly happy spending day after day reading my book by the scenic pool, sipping wine while watching the sun set beyond the hills, and preparing meals with Umbria's delicacies (truffles, yum!). My partner, however, is a history buff and a wine snob. Fortunately, there are countless beautiful villages, towns and cities within short driving distance. Marga and Vic, the custodians who live on site and speak both Italian and English, are a wealth of information, and can tell you where to go to see the sights, grab a bite, or take a hike. Personally, I loved Perugia, especially in the evening when the whole town (almost) is strolling on Corso Vannucci, and Arezzo, mainly for its awesome antique market. My partner was enamored with Assisi and its famous basilica, only 20 minutes from the house. Umbria is a place of such beauty and interest that it's one of the few places we agreed we could go back to again and again. And we did! October 2013 was our second trip. And as far as we're concerned, Santa Caterina is the only place to stay.

“The mist cascading over the nearby hills is from a dream”
Reviewed February 26, 2014 for a stay in June 2013

The two summer weeks that my wife, my infant daughter and I spent in Villa Santa Caterina were among the most restful and restorative of my life. The house is perched on top of a hill, surrounded by an ornate garden of fresh herbs and flowering plants, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. At breakfast, I would sip my coffee holding my baby daughter in the outdoor veranda and watch the morning mist snake through the mountains and dissipate over the hay fields dotted with circular bundles of hay. I'd while away the afternoons swimming in the refreshing infinity pool or reading in the hammock. Before dinner, as the sun lowered, we would take a family walk along the dirt road past farm houses and gentle brooks. Overall, the experience was peaceful and meditative. It allowed me to step out of the breakneck pace of new parenthood and the career rat race, take a measure of my life, and reorder my priorities. Marga and Vic, the two resident property caretakers, lived in a small cottage on the property and were generous with their time, their expertise and their stories. Periodically, we ventured into nearby town of Umbertide, which features some excellent restaurants and shops and a ton of local charm. The picturesque tourist hotspots in Umbria are a short drive away, and Florence is an easy day trip by train. But don't be surprised if you prefer to spend of your time on the property. You'll never want to leave.

“Feel on top of the world - Lovely, remodeled, and updated Italian villa in 17th Century style”
Reviewed February 25, 2014 for a stay in May 2012

Santa Caterina is an absolutely lovely, totally rebuilt & remodeled Italian villa in 17th Century Italian style atop Marie's hill with pool and guest cottage -- panoramic views -- very private, very well appointed and lovingly maintained, yet very cozy. Great indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces that don't interfere with bedroom privacy. Easy access to Umbertide, Gubbio, Deruta (great ceramics), Perusia, Assisi, and Siena, among others for all shopping needs. Florence is a fun and easy day trip. We have also recommended it to friends who enjoyed their stay as well. We love the sense of going back in time yet having all the modern conveniences.

“Relaxation”
Reviewed February 24, 2014 for a stay in May 2012

Peaceful, beautiful with great people. My wife and I stayed for a few days in May of 2012 and had an absolutely great experience. In between our trips to Rome and Florence, we needed a place to just lay by the pool, listen to the sounds of nature and eat/drink some good food and wine. The views are stunning and it has been one of the few places where I could truly disconnect from the real world. I would highly recommend and look forward to coming back again soon.
