We have been going to the Goldener Stern for many, many years and have never once been disappointed.

First the rooms. They are nicely appointed, spotlessly clean and the beds are very comfortable indeed. We have stayed in every type of room they have, except singles, over the years and cannot fault any of them. Downstairs, the dining room is beautifully laid out and the tables always set very nicely, or, if the weather is nice, you can sit outside on the terrace, overlooking the Rhine, to have your meal.

The food is excellent, whether at breakfast, when you can choose from a variety of meats, cereals, cheeses etc. - and all served with fresh brötchen - at lunch or indeed for dinner in the evening. They serve a lot of seasonal foods, always fresh and healthy, and in my opinion have the best kitchen in the valley.

Added to that, they have now opened a spa, for what the Germans call "wellness." You can book a massage, use the sauna or sit in a climate controlled room for salt inhalation. We have yet to use these facilities but we were shown around them last year and they look very nice indeed.

The previous reviewer mentioned location, but it really does depend on what you want. We like the gentle quietness of Kestert, just a short drive or one train stop away from the hustle and bustle of St Goarshausen/StGoar.

Room Tip: If you have trouble with stairs, let Frau Siebert know when booking.

If you are walking the Rheinsteig in Germany and need a place to stay for a couple of nights then seriously consider this lovely little hotel in Kestert. We stayed for 4 nights (including a 3 night Walking Package) and can highly recommend the place. I had a single “Komfort” room which looked out over the Rhine (all the rooms have Rhine views). A road runs between the hotel and river. The traffic during my stay was light and didn’t bother me, nor did the trains running on the opposite bank. Many hotels in this section of the Rhine have the railway running directly in front or behind them and even where it is some distance away the noise is an issue. The railway running though Kestert passes well behind the hotel and I did not hear it during my stay. A definite plus!
My room was spotless and had recently been renovated. There was plenty of storage space. The bed was very comfortable. The TV remote did take a little time to work out! The bathroom was immaculate too with shampoo/shower gel, tissues, wipes, soap, fluffy white towels and hairdryer.
Downstairs the restaurant was decorated in a traditional style and very welcoming. Tables were beautifully laid out and we were fortunate enough to be able to sit by the window and enjoy the views every mealtime. The buffet breakfast was excellent and substantial with a selection of breads and bread rolls, cooked meats and cheeses, cereal, fruits and fruit salad, fruit juices, yogurts and jams and more. Eggs were cooked to order. Our Walking Package included packed lunches and we were able to make up rolls to take with us as well as a piece of fruit and a soft drink and chocolate bar.
The evening meals we had were excellent and plentiful. Our Walking Package included a 3 course set menu each evening. As there is no choice it may cause a problem if you don’t like what is being served. If you opt for a package then it would be best to let them know in advance or on arrival if there is anything you don’t like. Of course you can just book bed & breakfast and dine as you like in the evenings.
Kestert is a small, quiet place and there is little there to do in the evenings (hence only 4 dots for location) but with such a good rail link (trains run every hour in both directions) it is ideal not only for the Rheinsteig but for visiting the area. One stop upstream is St Goarshausen where the KD Line berths and you also have the possibility to cross over on the car ferry giving access to all the places on the opposite bank via train. The Loreley Line stops at Kestert and offers cruises past the famous Loreley Rock and stops along the way.
The owner, Frau Siebert (who speaks English), is a charming lady who made us feel very welcome and really looked after us. The hotel has been in the family since 1779 and it is reflected in all the nice touches (including a fresh bottle of mineral water in your room every day) that make a stay that bit special. I can thoroughly recommend the Goldener Stern.
