Chimwemwe Lodge

This is as good as you will get in rural Zambia. The owners are lovely people who are very helpful. The rooms could do with some repairs especially the showers and bath but this is a small inconvenience considering the location. The food is good, especially the village chicken, and well priced.
My only complaint would be that the staff slacken off a bit when the owners travel to Lusaka but that is a problem the world over.
Enjoyed staying here.

Room Tip: The rooms are what you would expect in a rural location.

We stopped here for a night on our way from Chipata to Lusaka.
Cute in appearance but this lodge with so much potential falls very short . The rooms are comfortable and the linen clean but for the high room rate there were way too many details that let them down, light bulbs missing, taps full of lime, half used coffee sachets, only one channel on the TV, very dated bathroom and a disgraceful breakfast of white bread, margarine and jam!  They were full of excuses when I complained, which took 3 separate hikes to the reception, even then the receptionist was in a meeting and a waiter had to try and deal with all the problems including no electricity in the room!
They desperately require attention to detail!

We visited this lodge in November 2011 on our way from Lusaka to Malama. Malama is inland from Petauke when you are visiting the South Luangwa Park (130km from there). We are erecting a new camp in the Malama area (Malama Umoyo Camp) and we liked Chimwemwe Lodge a lot. It is well kept, the rooms are clean and look really ok. Do not expect a first class western lodge here. The food is average African style, the drinks are cold. We can recommend this place in Petauke. It is the best to stay. If you do not want to stop-over, you have to proceed all the way to Chipata. There you can find comparable or slightly better accommodations. We consider this place the best stopover between Chipata and Lusaka.

Chimwemwe Lodge is a fantastic stop off in the Eastern Province, and even for a longer break, we were so well looked after, the owners and staff could not have done enough for us to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Try the local chicken on the menu, beautiful, best meal I had in Zambia. The rooms are comfortable and traditionally furnished with ensuite, tv, mosquito net etc, and wifi! There is a great bar just across the road for a well earned castle after a busy day meeting African Chiefs, and taking in the breathtaking views. Can't wait to go back!

Nothing much has changed since the last review 2 years ago. The rooms are still dark and dingy, the hot water runs out quickly, and the service is as slow as ever. Actually it's even slower, as the lodge owner, Mr Tembo, has expanded the number of rooms and the staff is simply incapable to deal with the increased number of guests. This especially applies to reception-, meal-, and room-cleaning services.
Chalets are so flimsily built that every word (and other noises) can be heard through the paper-thin walls. We were unfortunate enough to be there when the President's men (not the Zambian President himself; I doubt he'd consider staying here) booked in at 2 a.m., cellphones ringing, talking loudly, keeping us awake the rest of the night.
On checking out, make sure to check your bill. It's not itemized and just gives a sum-total. We found all kinds of strange charges on ours - for rooms that we'd never occupied, and dinners and drinks we'd never consumed - and it took forever to sort it out.
Continental breakfast (2 thin slices of bread, marg, jam, and tea) is included in the K350,000 room rate (K300,000 single); if you want eggs it's K35,000 (with baked beans and half a shocking-pink sausage)! Outrageous. We did not try their lunches or dinners.
On the plus side: Chimwemwe now has a proper camping ground with proper ablution facilities which looks ok.
In 60km distant Nyimba a new hotel is going up which promises to beat poor tired old Chimwemwe into the proverbial cocked hat.

Room Tip: Go to the nearby Olga Lodge, run by a Canadian.

We stopped here on the way to South Luangwa National Park. This lodge is very convenient situated just off the main road. It is secure, rather quirky and very friendly. Bed was rather uncomfortable and not much hot water but we had a decent meal. There is a bar in the town which is very loud so bring ear plugs!
