The castle of Brézé (close to Saumur and Chinon) has the unique particuliarity to open both its "up" rooms and its "down" corridors. Take this tour on a warm day: you will enjoy the freshness of the places you'll discover from the deep "douves" around the castle: they're still researching how people in the early middle age lived in these troglodyte spaces... Take the lunch at the brasserie: not that big choice but honest plates for a good price/quality.

The caves of the Chateau are very interesting, and are worth a visit. But the lunch at the Chateau was terrible. Very bad wines, that we sent back, poor service, paper tablecloth, salt and pepper on original supermarket packages. Totally wrong for a Chateau the la Loire. Better to have a meal elsewhere !!

Chateau Breze was recommended to us by a friendly receptionist in hotel and it's been by far worth the trip. This is a unique combination of "modern" Renaissance castle and old cave dwellings coexisting in the same place. The castle itself is not big but has a couple of really nice rooms which can be visited without barriers. What exists below the castle is fantastic and justifies an unexpectedly high price (it's 11 Euro for adult). There's troglodite dwellings on one hand, but there's also a lot of carved rooms accessible from castle's moat where one gets insight in the operations of old Chateau - wine making, bread baking, etc.

Chateau Breze is therefore a combo of three things: Renaissance castle and its interior, caverns with insight in manufacture and services around Renaissance's inhabitants, and finally old troglodite dwellings.

Don't miss the nice dovecote on the way from parking to the castle!

We visited las week but didn't actually go into the castle, mainly because dogs are not admitted and also we thought 11 euros was a little bit expensive.

However, we had a lovely walk around the castle marvelling at the dry moat and the romantic castle.

We picked our Chateau to visit by looking for something unique, and Breze was for its troglodyte part.... And it paid off! The old 11th century caves directly under the Chateau, as well as the caves off the side of the moat, were fascinating! It felt like you got to see more of the 'hidden' bits than you do at other Chateau. Being 'less popular' (than Chambord or Chenonceau for example) meant more space to yourself and easier photo opportunities. Nothing wrong with the above-ground part... I think the pigeonnere (spelling???) took the prize there!
