Thora Boloka is just the most charming private cottage with the most beautiful setting ever. We spent 5 nights there for our 15th wedding anniversary and it was exactly what I was hoping for. The cottage really has everything one might need to cook up a storm and even though there is no electricity the fridge, freezer, and gas plate stove worked so well, I managed to make better food there than at home. The stoep with its view overlooking the valley made it hard to decide between going for a walk in the forest or just drinking another glass of red on the stoep. I overheard my 4 year old twin boys saying to one another that they really wouldn't mind staying there forever :) My husband spent an afternoon of birdwatching with David and was amazed at his knowledge and charm. Def recommended for bird lovers. Lisa was the most amazing host. Thanks to her and her wonderful team of people that made our stay so unforgettable.

It was our 3rd anniversary, and we are keen birders - so we decided to visit Kurisa Moya, as we heard that Kurisa Moya is one of the best forest birding destinations, and the forest cabins are set right in the canopy of the forest - magical, romantic and very private.

We were joined by our good friends, who also had their anniversary - they stayed in the other forest cabin.

Accommodation: we stayed in one of the 2 forest cabins, called "Tree Tops". It is really an unbelievable setting, right in the forest. It is very private, feels if you are alone in the forest.
Our friends stayed in "Birdsong", the other forest cabin. Both forest cabins are fabulous, but I can recommend "Tree Tops", as it has a slightly better view in the canopy. We spotted Narina Trogon, Knysna Turaco, Yellow-streaked greenbul etc etc etc right from our balcony!!

Birding: an outing with the bird guide is a must! Forest birding can be very challenging, and David Letsoalo helped us locating all the forest specials. I had an ambitious 29 target birds to see the weekend, and we saw 20 out of 29 in one outing with David (the famous bird guide)!!
some of the specials: Narina trogon, Cape parrot (x8! only about 600 left in the world!!), orange ground thrush, Black-fronted bushshrike, green twinspot, Bat Hawk, Magpie Mannikin and all the forest specials except scalythroated honeyguide which frustrated me as I could hear it but don't see it!

Staff: Lisa, David and all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, a real pleasure to meet them. We can't wait to see you guys again and thank you for our unbelievable weekend!

If you are a keen birder, romantic, or just looking for a weekend break from the city - it is the perfect place, being only 3 hours from Gauteng. A must visit!!!

Room Tip: Tree tops forest cabin the best!

Having spent 2 weeks in the Kruger, Kurisa Moya was our last stop before returning home to the UK. We spent 2 nights there and the accommodation was superb, everything you could wish for and so quiet and peaceful. The weather could have been slightly kinder, it felt like we were back home when we braaied in the rain! Some wonderful walking, can definitely recommend the 'koppje walk with a view'. We had a days birding with Paul which allowed the keen birder amongst us to mop up on some of the birds he had missed. Paul worked incredibly hard and managed to find some difficult birds. We would definitely return to Kurisa Moya it's just a shame it's so far from the UK.

We had a truly magical experience. We are avid bird photographers and Kurisa Moya offered stunning opportunities. Our highlight by far and an experience we will remember for the rest of our lives was the incredible sightings of African Wood-Owls (Thanx to the wonderful knowledge and helpfulness of one of Kurisa's bird guides Paul). The forest cabin was unique, very special and so romantic, one feels like you are so far away from all of the stresses of daily life and I have never felt so relaxed and safe. Lisa the owner is a phenomenal host and is always available to make your stay all the more special. Just to add a little extra on the bird guide Paul, we had four target species: Orange-ground Thrush, Short-clawed Lark, Green Twinspot and of course the Wood-Owls, Paul was incredibly dedicated braving horrible weather finding the Thrush, walking long distances to find the Lark and staying up late to help us with the Owls. We got all our target species!
Thank-you again Lisa and Paul you made our trip truly amazing and you will be seeing us soon!

Room Tip: The best place to stay is definitely in the forest cabins.

We found Kuriso Moya very relaxing and tranquil, even the late afternoon storms is calming. The perfect break away from City life. Amazing hikes in a magical forest! Kuriso is the only place we have ever returned to so many times for a get away in actual fact about 5 times in the last 8 years and we will most certainly return again for our 6th!

Room Tip: For a family we chose the Thora Boloka Cottage up in the mountains. Perfect for a family between 4...

A friend and I spent four nights at magical Kurisa Moya. We are birding enthusiasts and we were not disappointed. The bird guides, David and Paul were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and very friendly. Lisa is a welcoming and very helpful host and went out of her way to make our stay special. We did our own catering in a small cabin in the forest and were comfortable in every way. One can order meals which by all accounts are very good. Thank you to Lisa and her team for protecting a little piece of Paradise for all to share. We will be back!

We stayed at the Thora Boloka Cottage for a "breather" this past October. It was amazing. The cottage is set high on top of the mountain, with panoramic sweeping views as far as the eye can see. No electricity means you can completely switch off and reconnect with your partner, yourself, and your surroundings. Solar lights and candles provide a stunning ambiance for dinner time. A hammock on the stoep whisks you off to peaceful sleep. It was bliss. We cannot wait to return.
