The resort has recently opened and aspires to be "the" resort in Debre Zeit in terms of standard. Judging from the rooms it might be 4-star. Very spacious, well appointed, well fitted and great view. Absolutely nothing to complain in this regard. The location of the resort is also fantastic.

However, the big draw back is the food. There's a russian dude in the kitchen but what he produces is the worst I have eaten in Ethiopia. It is not even 1-star standard and unacceptable for place which charges around USD 170 for a night - in Debre Zeit! Time for the management to invest in a decent chef. So if you choose to stay here bring your own lunch box and for dinner go to the nearby Kuriftu Resort which offers decent food.

Another thing: I recently planned to spent another night there with family and we called to make a booking. However, we were told to go first to the resort's office in Addis (Bole) to make an advance payment for the night. What kind of idiotic place is this????? Where on earth do luxury resorts ask their guests to make advance payment in their head offices located 50 km away from the resort itself. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. We cancelled our reservation. (BTW: the resort has credit card facilities and all).

Maybe the resort management is afraid that guests may not be willing to pay the full rate after having been subjected to their disgusting food?

Room Tip: Choose a room on hill top.

I stayed at Adulala Resort for 1 night in February 2013. While the rooms are very spacious and beautifully designed and the view was magnificient, I would not return there mainly for 3 reasons. First is the sleep quality. They played loud music up until around 11pm while dogs continue to bark like crazy... Even after the music stopped, I heard very loud Ethiopians walking around my cottage. In the morning, birds and dogs woke me up at around 4:30am and by 7:00am, I heard the same Ethiopians talking in a very loud voice around my cottage. (I was not sure if they were guests or workers.)

Second reason why I don't return there is food. I was shocked that they served the exactly same food both for lunch and dinner buffet! Both times, the food looked like it was cooked a couple of days ago. While there was a good variety of food, nothing was really great. I heard, however, the food was much worse until a new chef came on board recently.

The third is the service. I understand that this resort was opened about 8 months ago and staff may not be experienced enough to deal with customers professionally. While most of the time they seemed to be doing their best, they certainly do not meet the level of services that they should provide at this kind of resort.

Room Tip: The ones up higher on the hills were very nice.

This resort is 62 km from Addis Ababa, but may take from 1-3 hours because of the traffic. Once here you are in unexpected paradise. This is an environmentally sensitive, exquisite resort on a crater lake (site of an extinct volcano), Lake Babagoya. It is perched on a steep hillside and consists of a number of individual cottages, each of which is unique. Most have a large bedroom, fireplace, sitting area with couch and chairs, a large bathroom and an outdoor terrace overlooking the hillside and lake. There are some even larger cottages. The landscape is semi-tropical and magnificent. If at a distance across the lake, you can barely discern the cottages, they are so beautifully blended into the hillside.

When I arrived, my cottage was not yet available, so they provided for my use another.

There is a steep walk down to an outdoor bar, lounge chairs and lawn area on the shore of the lake. One can rent boats for a ride, or go fishing or swimming.

There is a wonderful pool up higher on the hillside with bar and adjacent spa with full and very inexpensive spa services. Prices for cottages and all services are very inexpensive by international standards. In Hawaii the cottages in this setting and of this size would likely be $1000 per night. Here they are a fraction of that.

The restaurant is lovely with excellent food. Breakfast is included, and is outdoors on a terrace overlooking the lake with magnificent views. There is a buffet with more than a dozen choices each morning and a huge Sunday luncheon buffet.

There are play facilities for the children, pony rides and other activities. There are two tennis courts, meeting facilities and at the highest point on the mountain there is Topview, with bar, pool table and other facilities.

In all this is a wonderful facility. I would easily have rated it 5*, were it not for a tedious and inefficient check in and check out process. There was also said to be wifi throughout. This did not prove to be the case. It was unavailable in the cottages, rarely and unpredictably available in the restaurant and poolside area.

They do not accept Visa which is unusual in Ethiopia for a facility of this size and quality. I arrived with insufficient funds. After a talk with the manager, he arranged for a representative to come to meet me at my convenience once back in Addis to pay for my wonderful weekend at Adulala. He never even asked for my name or phone number.
