Kanta Lodge
Reviewed March 27, 2014

My husband and I stayed at the Kanta Lodge for 5 nights in February 2014 while we were assisting with a medical mission in Konso. What a wonderful place! The tukuls (individual huts) are spectacular--so spacious! We had two beds, a table, chair and two benches for luggage, etc. The beds are comfortable and while there are hooks on the ceiling for mosquito nets, none are provided, so if you want them you will have to bring your own. We did not have our own but the few bugs that buzzed around were not a bother to us. There is no door to the bathroom and shower area, and water from the shower makes the bathroom floor very slippery, so be forewarned.

There is no internet service unless you bring your own laptop and ask if you can use it in the restaurant. There is no power over night, and power during the day is sporadic. We took several morning showers in the dark by pointing a flashlight (an essential item to bring) at the general area. Expect to have no power and be happy when you do!

Every staff member we met was outstanding. Those in the restaurant are exceptional, handling the myriad of orders from our large group with humor and ease. The breakfast opens at 7:00 am with a limited buffet which included breads and some eggs. Not overly exciting but enough. The dinner menu was usually the same each night except for a couple of specials listed for that evening. Everything we had was very good, especially the chicken stir fry.

For a treat, walk to the top of the driveway and climb the steps to the roof of the building on the left for a breathtaking view of the complex and the area. Another pleasure is bringing your morning coffee outside to enjoy the flowers and the view as the day begins.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat! Enjoy!

This comfortable new lodge, on the Konso Road, is not far from the highly photogenic traditional Konso village of Gamole and just over the road from the excellent small Konso museum. There's another nice village with some shops which makes a nice walk just up the road. Rooms are spacious and sparsely furnished thatched tukuls which spill down the prettily planted hillside to a pleasant shady restaurant terrace. Showers were hot, toilets worked well and everything was immaculately clean. No nets but no mosquitos seen. There's a varied dinner menu, food quality is excellent. Breakfast is a matter of good timing as the groups will hoover up all the food but they make an effort to replenish. Staff cope well with large groups at mealtimes but you will have to catch their attention if not part of a group, once they know you're there they're very attentive. The electricity is turned off at 10pm but they will give you candles. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Very nice.

We loved this Tokul huts with balcony and very good mattress. The decoration is lovely.Need however to add door to the both room!!!!and also to put something against moskitos...
the hut was very clean and built in very interesting way like a little village surrounded with trees and flowers all over. With a little effort this place could gain another star .The location of restaurant is perfect with nice view-part of it is out side-we fell like in a garden.Food is good!!!staff was helpful.

We could hardly believe our eyes when we arrived at the lodge - it looked so different from all the other places where we had been in Ethiopia so far, flowers everywhere, nice, neat tukuls which make the tourist look forward to some comfort , BUT in our case we had to fight for having what we or better our agency (fantastic TAITU TOUR) had paid for. At our arrival we were asked to wait for the accommodation as the staff was still cleaning. After lunch they tried to put us in a building in a room with just a bed - no chairs, no table…..knowing that there are no other decent hotels in the surroundings they probably thought we would accept which we didn't . We were then - after a long discussion - put in a tukul, where - they said - the washbasin had been repaired FOR US and everything would be ok. The tukul was not very spacious but we had a bed, a table and two chairs…. BUT no door between sleeping room and bathroom and what was worse no water during the night, exactly when I had some tummy-problems….And there was no mosquito - net, while other, much simpler lodges had them.

Breakfast was ok, while for lunch and especially dinner the selection was VERY limited - no soups, no salad - all eaten up by a group we were told. I still wonder what the other groups were later in the evening offered….and what they do with the lovely salad and greens we saw in the orchard - same goes for the mangos - no fruit available in the restaurant. Marvelous view from the garden-restaurant, what a pity they don't make more out of this great place !

My room was very nice and spacious.
The service at the restaurant was slow but being a solo traveller next to a big group of tourist it was predictable. The food was nice though.
Friendly staff. Really nice place.

Looks like a brand new hotel getting it's final touches. I did a solo tour in Ethiopia and stayed every night in a different hotel. Everything was organized by tour operator Abeba Tours Ethiopia and everything was perfect. This was the first hotel and a great one. Every room in a separate lodge, the restaurant overlooking the valley. Very quiet and peaceful. I can recommend it and would definitely stay again.

A beautiful, massive display of bougainvillea welcomes you as you arrive at this hotel, the tukuls look impressive and inviting, and there’s a delightful restaurant terrace that overlooks the wide valley below. Here the fantasy ends. This place is dominated by tour groups (there were about 70 people from four German tour groups out of a total of 80 guests when we were there) and the tour companies block book the tukuls months in advance. Unless you’re very lucky, independent travellers are left with the basic rooms. Our basic room was a long way from the dining room, across a building site churned up by recent rain, past the cattle shed and the chicken pen. There was no water in either ours or the other adjacent rooms (whereas there was water in the tukuls) and it took two hours of arguing with the indifferent “management” before the problem was fixed. Even then we never had any hot water and if you wanted a shower, you had to keep your hand on the shower button otherwise the water stopped. The loo had a nasty whiff of urine. No mirrors anywhere. Loo door didn’t shut. No loo paper. You have little option for dinner other than to buy the expensive buffet option and pile in to the trough along with the tour groups. If, like us, you choose not to eat three courses (or vegetarian), at the Kanta Lodge, that’s tough. We foolishly had a lie-in the next morning. By the time we got to breakfast, the tour groups had hoovered up the food and we were left with a few dregs. Our 1 star rating is based on our experience in Ethiopia – we’re not making comparisons with hotels in the Western world. Ethiopia has some excellent hotels: check out the Mountain View in Lalibela, the Gheralta Lodge in Hawsein, the Haile Resort in Awassa, the Buska Lodge in Turmi, the Paradise Lodge in Arba Minch or the Sabana Beach Resort at Lake Langano. It can be done in Ethiopia but the management of the Kanta are incapable of delivering because they don’t know how to manage. There’s not a great deal to see in this area, so we suggest that, there being no better alternative to the Kanta, you could give Konso a wide berth.
