We were in Breckenridge for a week and wanted to do something a bit different so we decided to try our hand at ice climbing. We met at the Apex office to get our gear and headed off to a frozen waterfall. We were a group of 9, so we had two guides. It was a bit of a drive to get to the location and then about a 15 minute easy walk to get to the climb site. Our guides were just great! Although the experience was a bit scary, I felt completely safe. The guides set-up 3 different routes up the ice and we took turns climbing. Yes, you get to use an ice ax and use that to help pull yourself up. You are also harnessed for the entire climb, so really, it is very safe. The actual height is about 75-100 feet (but it feels much higher when you are up there!). Its a long excursion. Apex provided some hot tea and granola bars. Only con - it is a bit far from Breck to get to the Apex office where you pick up your gear (crampons, helmets, harnesses) and then we actually drove back towards Breck for the climb. It would be great if Apex could somehow meet Breckenridge customers somewhere closer. But otherwise, a terrific experience!
