“A Nice But Not Great Choice”
Reviewed June 25, 2014

I like Westins, and this one is no different. The staff, as usual, was great -- helpful and informative -- and the location was terrific. It's along the river at the foot of the mountain and the actual Beaver Creek resort is up the "hill" about 2 1/2 miles. The rooms are small and fairly priced; the food is average and over-priced but plenty of options are all around so not to worry. The one odd thing was the pool. Half of it was seemingly reserved for the swimmers doing laps which is great if you're one of the ones swimming laps but not so great if you're just trying to enjoy the water with 20 others in the other half of the pool. Just a thought, but why not designate times for lap swimming and otherwise leave the pool to the guests?

Thank you for staying with us at the Westin Riverfront. We're gald to hear you enjoyed our resort and all the amenities it has to offer. We appreciate your feedback regarding the lap swimming lanes in our pool and will consider it as we move forward. Our Westin brand is committed to the well being of our guests, and having a lap lane available in our saline pool is a special amenity for those looking to rejuvenate. Relaxation is an important part of the experience we strive to provide as well, and we hope to provide that balance. Thank you again, and we hope to see you back soon!

We recently stayed four nights at the hotel. Overall, we had a wonderful experience! The hotel is gorgeous, the rooms are clean and well appointed, and the pool and kids club were a blast. The only disappointment was the consistency in dealing with food allergies in the restaurants and conference meals. We had called and worked with the event coordinator prior to our stay to make sure that egg and nut free meals could be accommodated for our young daughter. Upon arriving, it felt like we had to re-verify and negotiate each meal versus having a "safe" meal ready at each meal and event. Working through this at each meal was time consuming for the staff and more risky as quick judgments about food ingredients and prep were being made. At one point, we were told that the dessert (cookies) was safe and going to be served to our daughter, but upon asking more questions, found that they were made with egg as we suspected. Due to the severity of the allergy we were dealing with, this could have been a deadly mistake. We really appreciate the help from Victor, who took us under his wing and really worked hard to make sure the meals were safe. Ryan was also excellent to work with - incredibly patient and always willing to help. If it hadn't been for these two employees, we would have had to abandon the hotel meals altogether. Food allergies are unfortunately (and not by choice!) a reality for some of us travelers. If the event coordinator would have said upfront that our daughter's needs could not have been handled, we would have made other plans. Unfortunately, we were expecting no problems due to the pre-conversation and it ended up being a rough spot in an otherwise outstanding long weekend. The hotel is beautiful, but if you are dealing with food allergies, I would say there are hotels much more experienced that you may want to consider.

Room Tip: Great mountain views available!

Green Features: Great recycling program! I also loved the individual hand towels in place of paper towels during our conference.

Thank you for staying with us at the Westin Riverfront. We're delighted to hear you enjoyed the pool and Westin Kids Club so much. Our apologies for the challenges you experienced in regards to your child's food allergies. It sounds like you did everything you could ahead of time to help make that part of your stay as easy as possible. We appreciate your feedback on the matter and will work hard to provide a better experience in similar situations moving forward. We are very glad to hear Victor and Ryan were able to assist you and help make things right. Thank you again.

The Westin Resort & Spa at Beaver Creek is a gorgeous facility, but the level of hospitality served there is not up to what I expected. We stayed 2 nights on the drive from Denver to Moab.

The biggest disappointment was the Westin Renewal Package, which I have made good use of before at Westin Copley Sq in Boston and elsewhere. The package is an extra $25 per night: breakfast for 2, 4pm check-out, and daily newspaper. But we were told that due to an influx of guests we'd have to check out by noon. Breakfast is not the lavish buffet I've come to expect from a Westin resort. Instead it consists of a restaurant voucher to get coffee, exactly one entrée - all of which are variations on bacon & eggs - or a bowl of oatmeal - and exactly one beverage. If you want toast or a piece of fruit or more juice with your meal, that will cost you extra! And the table service in the restaurant is amateurish. The whole breakfast arrangement is stingy and clumsy. BTW - the "newspaper" is USA Today. I felt like I was upsold on the package with nothing to show for it. Had I known how meager the offering is, we could have easily brought breakfast with us and cooked it in our room.

Some other issues:
The pool & hot-tub area, which is lovely, is suffering from a persistent bad smell. Staff seems trained to say it comes from a waste-water treatment plant just downstream from the hotel, and that it depends on the direction of the wind. On our floor, the smell was noticeably present in the corridor, but thankfully, not in our room.

The spa cafe and treatment area is being renovated and under construction. Fine, but this fact was not mentioned on the website. The fitness area is fabulous - a large, well equipped gym floor. When they finish the spa, I'm sure it will be beautiful, too. But they are not renovating the locker area and steam room, which are cramped and badly in need of an update - not at all appealing. The front desk will loan you whatever footwear or sports attire you require. But the hotel is consistently stingy. They charge $5 for the sneaker loaner and $15 for a yoga class. These kinds of amenities are customarily included in the resort fee and should not be extra. It feels like nickel & diming.

The promised evening receptions in the lobby did not materialize. Pity, because the lobby and common areas are stunning, and inviting. The hotel has a particularly excellent library, freely available to guests.

There is a mandatory $25 per night Valet Parking charge. This is in addition to the $20 per night Resort Fee. The resort fee is customary at hotels of this type but the extra parking charge is pure chiseling. Let's face it, this isn't mid-town Manhattan or South Beach. There's plenty of room for a parking lot and most people would rather park their own car. I can understand indoor valet parking in the snowy season, but for the other 6 months of the year, please Westin, let me just park my car.

The Studio Suite we stayed in had a very well-equipped kitchenette, with a 2-burner electric stove, mini fridge, micro, and more than enough cookware. The suite highlight is a large, comfortable marble bathroom with double vanity, inviting tub, and a separate glass shower. But overall, the Studio Suite felt slightly cramped. A one-BR suite is much larger, and probably worth the higher rate.

We had a couple of issues with an over-exuberant housekeeping staff. They cleared away our box containing food & beverage provisions. I believe it was an honest mistake and that they mistook it for discarded material, but this comes down to a matter of staff training & experience. It's never happened to me anywhere else, and it shouldn't have happened here. Also, turndown service opened the folding couch, even though we had specifically replied - no, do not open the folding couch - when they asked if they should open the folding couch. So I suggest you use absolute clarity when leaving your things in the room and when expressing your needs to staff.

In defense of the hotel, the manger was responsive to my list of dis-satisfactions. She waived the Resort Fee and the unconscionable Valet Parking fee, a total of $45 per night, and gave me an extra 10,000 Starpoints to allay my pain.

So I recommend, always, when staying at a high-end property or dining at a fine restaurant - - Don't get Nervous. get Service! If you are legitimately dis-satisfied, nip it in the bud. Immediately - politely - address yourself to the person in charge. Give her a chance to correct the problem. You will always get the attention you deserve. Look at it this way, a quality establishment of this type exists to provide a premium level of satisfaction to its guests. As a guest, its your responsibility to act as a check on how well this business delivers customer service. The person running this business knows that fact as well as you do. So, when you explain to them the problem, clearly & courteously, they always take it very seriously, fix it right away, and thank you lavishly for helping them get their business straight. You - the customer - are the vital link in the hospitality chain. Assert and be served.

The Westin is a lovely building in a picturesque setting, with those remarkable "heavenly beds". And there's the continuous sound of the roiling Eagle River to lull you to sleep. The concierge desk is very helpful and can organize any fun outdoor activity you could want: rafting, hiking, horseback riding, ATVs, etc. There's also a pretty good diner called Northside just a short walk away (Cross under I-70). It's only a 10-minute drive to Vail, where there is ample free parking, and if you need it, a top-notch medical facility.

I'm not sure I would choose the Westin again. Maybe. But there seem to be other good options nearby and I would probably give one of those a try instead.

Room Tip: Studio Suites are a bit cramped, but with good kitchenette and a large bathroom. One-BR suites a bet...

Thank your for staying with us at the Westin Riverfront and for taking the time to provide feedback, both constructive and positive, regarding your experience. We're sorry you were disapointed in the renewal package this stay, the late check out is based upon availability and can vary depending on occupancy. While we don't offer a regular buffet at the resort, as you mentioned we do offer full breakfast entree selections. We do also offer a number of other newspaper titles and are happy to offer you those options on your next stay.

There was indeed a periodic odor coming from the Town of Avon recently. While out of our control, our apologies for any impact this had on your stay. Be assured the issue has been identified by the town and is being resolved. Our spa enhancement project is complete and beautiful and we're sorry we didn't get to updating our Westin Workout locker rooms this time around but will consider your suggestion as we move forward. We're happy to hear you took advantage of our New Balance Gear Lending program. Please know that the $5 per stay fee is part of the brand program and consistent across all Westins.

We're glad you found our lobby and common areas so spectacular and apologize for any disapointment regarding entertainment. We have live music and entertainment every night during the winter months. During the summer we have live music on our Maya patio on Fridays from the end of June until Labor Day weekend.

While we are not mid-town Manhattan, real estate in our mountain valley is in high demand and we are not able to provide a self parking option for our guests. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, however, this is standard in the area and we feel our parking rates are actually quite competitive.

We're glad you were able to work with our management team to resolve any issues during your stay. While we may not be able to do the same thing for every guest, we would indeed much rather have the opportunity to turn things around during your stay than to have you leave feeling disappointed.

Thank you again.

This hotel is truly special, in a special place, but we had some issues with the front desk and our accommodations: The rooms are very clean and the staff was extremely polite and helpful. The salt water pool and hot tubs are incredible, the views from the balcony are epic. Here is my problem with the place...we had reserved a room with two queen beds and had let the front desk know ahead of time time we were going to be coming in a little before check in time (keep in mind this is during the off-season from skiing-summer time), so when we arrive they place us in a very nice room that had only a king size bed and a pull out couch. We called down to the front desk and asked to be moved to a room that had two beds and they acted as if the room we were in had two beds as it was. We were only going to be there for that one night and had a hiking trip planned so we didn't have much time to wait around for them to clean another room so we just kept what we had and dealt with it, but having to sleep on a pull out couch when i was expecting a REAL bed was rather off putting to say the least, specially when the front desk acted as though the pull out couch with the 3 inch mattress was the same as the luxurious bed that they offer. They said that they had to clean the other rooms, but we had specifically requested early check in, for TWO QUEEN BEDS, during the off season (so not as the hotel was fully booked the night before) when the reservation was made. So in my eyes that was a huge mistake on the front desks part, this hotel is basically a resort/spa that has anything and everything one could want, but i definitely was not expecting to sleep on a paper thin mattress with springs poking out of it when i come to place like this and pay the type of $ they charge to stay there. Also there was no where to buy beverages in the hotel besides the bar, and that had a very limited selection of non-alcoholic beverages available. As i said earlier all of the staff was extremely polite and courteous, besides the front desk person that told us that the pull out couch is the same as a queen size bed...lol. With an addition of some vending machines for beverages, and retraining of certain staff members in proper customers service this place would be a 5.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback, so that we can better meet our guests' expectations in the future. I apologize that we were not able to meet your request for an early check-in with the bed types requested. While the middle of June is not as busy as peak ski season, we have had a very busy month. I wish that we had been able to move you into the requested room type when the mistake was brought to our attention upon your early arrival. Our standard check in time is 4pm and depending on the day it can be difficult for us to accomodate early arrival requests. We're glad you enjoyed the resort andhope that you will return, so that we can work to exceed your expectations during your next visit.

I was pleasantly surprised by the level of service, the impeccable cleanliness and the overall luxury and beauty of this resort. From the greeting by the valet when you arrive to the time you leave, every single employee makes an effort to ensure you have an unforgettable experience.

The rooms are spacious with a fully stocked kitchen (including a toaster), a cooktop and a mini fridge. The bed is luxurious and comfortable. The bathroom is huge with a tub and a stand up shower; storage is plentiful and the room had a fireplace. Some rooms have balconies or patios and rooms facing the pool/river/mountain offer spectacular views.

The meeting rooms offered a great combination of indoor and outdoor space, giving guests an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful June weather and gorgeous scenery and the lovely sound of the rapid river. There is also a walking path behind the hotel that runs along the river

Their gym is much larger and nicer than most hotel gyms and in addition to the pool, they have two infinity hot tubs.

I've stayed in more expensive hotels but this was truly the nicest.

Stay here. You will NOT be disappointed!

Room Tip: Choose one with a mountain view and a balcony.

.Arrived at the hotel along the bike path by the river which runs behind the hotel.Room was very nice- kitchen area, sofa, very comfortable bed and spacious bathroom. Pool had a lane for doing laps which was great, towels and lounge chairs to enjoy the mountain view. Ordered room service as the mexican menu was not what I was looking for. Concierge very helpful with all requests. I would think about staying for here skiing as the gondola is located by one of the hotel entrances.
