Hostellerie de La Riviere
Reviewed December 13, 2010

We have been coming to the Hostelleirie de la Riviere year for more than a decade, and we still love it. True, it isn't cheap (E200 for a meal for two adults and 2 children) but the food is fantastic , the staff a complete delight and the service spot on.

I love the peaceful atmosphere of the dining room and its slightly off-the-beaten location track in a rather downtrodden suburb of Boulogne, which always makes me feel I have walked into the pages of Madame Bovary.

The menus are available online so you can see what you are about to get. The presentation of the food tho is beautiful.

I suspect we will continue to come here for another decade, at least.

We will return to this convenient restaurant with rooms as it's within easy reach of the channel ports and serves excellent food. The rooms were maybe small but were modern and well equipped . We found the owners and staff very friendly and helpful which made for a relaxing stay. Only one other English couple staying whilst we were there but all rooms were taken.

We spent 1 night here to break up our journey through France. We booked the hotel via Bookings.com and were really pleased with our find at €75 per night as this hotel looked and sounded fantastic (we were not disappointed).

We arrived in Boulogne and with the aid of Sat Nav found the hotel without any problems and it was no more than a 10 minute drive away which was ideal for driving in France for the first time!!!

On arrival at the hotel the staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming, however, with the exception of the manager no one spoke English so this was fun as we dont speak French! This was not a problem though and we got by. The hotel is very small with only 7 rooms. Theres no reception area as such, just a bar area big enough for 2 tables which then led straight into the restaurant. We had to walk through the restaurant with our luggage to get to the bedrooms and as the restaurant was full for lunch it was a little embarrassing.

The bedroom was quite small but decorated to a very high standard and kept perfectly clean.

After dropping the luggage off we went back downstairs to sit in the garden and have a drink. We ordered 2 small beers. We were invited to stay for dinner but had read that it was quite pricey so had decided to get a taxi into Boulogne and find somewhere less expensive, however, the manager said a taxi would be about €20 each was so we decided to book a table at the hotel afterall. We had another drink each before going back to the room to shower and change for dinner.

The food was fantastic, very small portions but split into 7 courses so you didnt go hungry. We had a bottle of water and a bottle of wine with dinner. To round up the evening we had a glass of port each which the manager took to our room as I think he wanted to go home!!!

The following day we had breakfast which was also very good, fresh fruit, boiled egg and a selection of breads, pastries and jams (all home made I think). Then it was time to settle up and get on our way.

The room was €75 as I have already stated, add to that the 2 meals, 2 breakfasts, 3 drinks each, wine and water. The bill came to €315, we knew it was going to be expensive but it still hit hard when our first night in France took us well over budget!!! Even so we decided to not worry about it and enjoy our stay, which we did and have no major regrets.

Was it worth it - if you can stretch your cash a little bit then yes it was worth it for the experience.
Would I do it again? Probablly not - I couldnt afford to do it again. If you are like us and watching the money and trying to do things on a shoe string then this isnt the place to go, however, if you want to treat yourselves and have a taste of what it is like to be spoilt for a night in a romantic setting, away from it all, then I would recommend you pau this hotel a visit.

This place is really a find, particularly given a) the reasonable prices and b) proximity (20 - 30 mins) to the tunnel.

The wider location is not great, being a suburb of Boulogne, but the immediate environment is delightful, on a quiet street with a lovely shaded garden out the back, where you can have a drink and, I believe, eat as well.

The building is a fairly basic, and this is a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel; the rooms are therefore fairly small, however the recent renovation has been done very tastefully, to quite a high standard, especially the bathrooms.

The food is excellent value. We had the menu degustation at €59 for six courses. It was mostly very good, our main courses being excellent, the only disappointment being the dessert.

Perhaps the high point is the service, which is attentive and friendly but still very professional. On the Friday night we were there, the dining room was just over half full, and it was clear that everyone was really delighted with the standard of food and service, which makes a difference and tells you a lot.

One slight niggle is the proximity of the railway line, but I'm a light sleeper and wasn't woken so I don't count this as a big deal.

All in all a really agreeable, conveniently located establishment run by people who have clearly put a lot of themselves into it and deserve to succeed.

Just spent a saturday night at the Hostellerie. The room was admittedly small, but the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom new, and with a good shower. Food in the restaurant is very good, imaginative and of a very high standard. The restaurant would definitely be the reason for going back again. Breakfast was delicious too.
Unfortunately they are closed on sundays so we had to move hotels but apparently this is not unusual in France.
