“No, not Tita Tulum, Tee-to-tum!"”
Reviewed February 20, 2010

After a horrendous experience with Delta Airlines, who cancelled our first flight and rescheduled us, effectively shortening our trip by 2 days, my man and I arrived frustrated and exhausted in Tulum, our first trip to Mexico.

Richard, the owner of Teetotum, was amazingly helpful and flexible, considering we'd paid a deposit for the room and were supposed to have been there two days prior, we'd been in communication via email and everything worked out perfectly. (Except having a shorter trip.)

We are also picky eaters- I'm vegan and my boyfriend is allergic to wheat (though not vegan) and I'd asked Richard if he thought the restaruant in the hotel could accomodate us. He said yes, and there was definitely enough to choose from, including super delicious guacamole (and I'm a snob) and, on our second day, a special bean and veggie salad the chef had whipped up with us in mind. So cool!

So, with beer and guac in tow, we explored the hotel- 4 guest rooms, a plunge pool, lounge, rooftop lounge, and cafe. A few very friendly cats and sometimes a very old dog named Booker. Totally relaxing and comfortable, as well as stylish!

The rooms are super clean and comfy, with beach / pool towels in addition to huge bath towels. They provide bottled water for tooth brushing purposes, and there's a little mini fridge that just managed to fit a six-pack.

The hotel is just on the edge of Tulum pueblo, on the road that leads to the beach. They provide free bikes if you want to ride the 3/4 mile or so to the beach, but it's only 40 pesos or so if you want a cab. On your way back, though, make sure to pronounce Teetotum "Tay-toe-toom." Every cab driver thought I was saying Tita Tulum, which was on the opposite side of town...

The only way this place could be better is if it was beachfront, but the fact that it's so close to the town, the supermarket (with ATM), and a stone's throw from the beach makes it pretty darn perfect.

My spouse and I recently enjoyed a weekend stay at Teetotum and could not have had a better experience! The hotel is chic and inviting with excellent customer service and hospitality. Richard, the owner, was warm, friendly and knowledgeable and we appreciated the personal service. Emma, one of the do-it-all gals couldn't have been sweeter or more accomodating.

The overall aesthetic was right up our ally -- laid back hip with fun touches and a cool contemporary vibe.

Breakfast and bikes (both included) were immensely enjoyed and appreciated. Lunch was terrific and beer is available for 10 pesos; what a deal!

As we were in town for a special event, we were unable to partake in some of their evening events but had we had been able to, I imagine they would have been as cool as they looked.

Location is ideal for biking to town, ruins and beach.

While there we visited several other hotels where friends were staying and Teetotum was definitely the best by far!

I feel more relaxed just writing about it.

Enjoy your stay!

My partner and I booked his hotel because of the wonderful reviews here on tripadvisor and were not disappointed. It's location right on the edge of town and just a short drive to the beach was perfect for us -- a great home base for hitting the beaches, taqueria lunches in town, exploring ruins, and checking out the many cenotes in the area. Richard and all of the staff were super friendly and helpful about where to go.

The breakfast in the restaurant is one of the best in town, and a great deal too.

Pros:
-- 24-hour electricity (not the case for most places on the beach)
-- very stylish
-- clean
-- awesome, friendly staff
-- homey vibe: have beach towels and snorkel gear for you to borrow, Richard let us borrow his computer to check in for our flight
-- affordable rates
-- nice room and common areas
-- good restaurant and bar
-- free wifi
-- free parking
-- a/c if you want it
-- excellent location for exploring the area

Cons:
-- weak water pressure in the shower
-- toilet can't handle toilet paper (like a lot of places in Mexico)
-- door entry bolt (rather than regular door knob) sticks and is a bit of a hassle since it requires a key inside and outside the room (you have to take it out to get in and our of your room safe)

Overall, a great little hotel. Highly recommended and I would definitely stay here again!

The Teetotum Hotel has everything you need, and we had a wonderful experience - though its guests should not expect to be sitting in the lap of luxury in terms of the rooms themselves. On a vacation in Tulum, you shouldn't be sitting in your room all day anyway! I would rather have a working air conditioner and an ipod speaker than an unnecessarily large bathroom. I'd rather have lovely spots to sit and read outside than an apartment-sized suite.

So the Teetotum was perfect for my boyfriend and me. The free bikes from the hotel turned out to be a fantastic addition to our vacation -- the bike path down the beach was extended 3 months ago, and makes for a really beautiful and relaxing ride as you cruise by the beachfront hotels and restaurants. It was another easy bike ride to the nearby Mayan Ruins (we splurged on a private tour guide there and definitely thought it was worth it - very informative). We biked all the way down to La Zebra hotel/ restaurant and had a Pina Colada on the beach and hung out in the hammocks there. We went to Hidden Worlds and loved it - a nice way to do a lot of different activities all in one day (snorkeling in cenotes, ziplining, sky-cycling, rappelling, etc).

The service at Teetotum was helpful and friendly but unobtrusive - perfect. We were happy to be staying at a place whose restaurant had such delicious breakfasts, and even the basic continental breakfast (included with room) is tasty toast and fresh papaya jam with coffee and OJ.

Our two best meals were at El Tabano and Posada Margharita, with the latter being more expensive but definitely worth it.

A trip to Tulum is not about the town, which is definitely a bit dingy. It's about rest and relaxation and the mini-day-trips you can plan easily. We were able to walk into town from Teetotum, which was convenient (though I wouldn't have wanted to walk alone without my boyfriend - the dingy parts really are kind of sketchy)....we found a number of nice places to eat in town, including Dolci Sappori, Elemental (good crepes and Croque Madame)...

We were told to eat at Tacos Diaz and so we tried it - would NOT recommend it to others. There are many other, better mexican food places to go. This was like the McDonald's of Mexico.

All in all, a wonderful and restful trip, and we'd definitely stay at the Teetotum again, despite its slightly smelly pillows.

It was my fourth year in a row visiting Tulum, and my third time staying at Teetotum. The hotel is excellent, top too bottom. Great hosts, food, staff, music, ambiance...the rooms are super clean and spacious w/free wifi, AC, king beds, fridge...

It is right on the road to the beach and town, very convenient for the Tulum "Ruins" beaches and more...bicycles, snorkeling gear etc. are provided gratis of the hotel.

Just want to add thanks to Richard, Karen, Virginia and Cory for another amazing and chill vacation!!!

See you next year...

Very well located, on the road to the beaches, and just a few blocks away from restaurants and eveything you would need in Tulum pueplo. At first sight , we thought it would be noisy because of the road (my wife is a bad sleeper), but it turned out to be really calm, and easy to rest.Richard and Karen are great hosts, the rooms are well designed, with a huge bed, A/C, wi-fi etc... the staff is cool and the atmosphere relax. The best alternative to the beach's cabañas or to the overpriced resorts.
We stayed there 8 nights, and enjoyed it a lot. If we come back in Tulum, we'll definitely stay there again.
