“Enchanting Spot”
Reviewed February 8, 2011

My husband & I stayed at La Selva Mariposa for 3 nights. We wish we could have stayed longer. This place is a true oasis only a short drive from the beaches of Tulum. It's great to go to the beach for the day but return in the evening to the sounds & smells of the jungle. Lou & Moe are fantastic hosts. They are open & welcoming & share their home & love of the area. Our little casita felt quite luxurious. We had soft towels, changed daily. plenty of soap & shampoo, purified drinking water & complimentary beer.
a generous breakfast sets you up for the day.
The owners (Lou & Moe) have thought of all the small details to make one's stay relaxing & memorable. Try their candle lighted dinner & the mayan steam bath for something really special. Nothing quite as wonderful as enjoying a glass of wine outdoors by their waterfall without a mosquito or bug in sight. Now that's my kind of jungle!!

La Selva Mariposa (The Jungle Butterfly) is a beautiful B&B nestled in the jungle about 20 minutes from Tulum pueblo (town). Our room was lovely in an understated way---no kitschy bright colors. We had a palapa roof and a shower open to the sky and our bed was extremely comfortable. There was wonderful art on the walls and many unusual artifacts to enjoy. The property itself is hidden at the end of a semi-paved road and is a miniature Garden of Eden, with its jungle foliage and additional exotic plantings. The pool(s) are small but lovely and evoke the feeling of cenotes (clear, pristine pools formed by underground rivers) found in caverns throughout the Mayan Riviera and Yucatan area). The owners, Moe (Mari) and Lou are wonderful hosts and so are their three friendly dogs. Our stay began with Moe leading us on an extensive tour throughout the property, pointing out the jungle paths, the steam cabin, the breakfast area and the Mayan-style fountain. She and Lou explained the history of their beautiful B&B and how Lou basically built it from scratch using stone and other natural materials. It's obvious that great thought and creativity went into each element of the rooms and grounds and that Moe and Lou have serious concern for coexisting respectfully with their ecosystem. Everything possible for the comfort of their guests has been provided for, such as purified water in the rooms and bottled water to take along on outings, big towels and roll-ups to take to the beach and cenotes, etc. They gave us excellent guidance on how to make the most of our time and avoid tourist traps. Lou sent us an e-mail with detailed directions, including photos of landmarks, to get us there---another example of our hosts' thoughtfulness. Breakfasts were served in the palapa-roofed outdoor dining space and they were delicious Mexican feasts in very generous amounts. It is a time when the guests mingle and share experiences with one another as well as with Moe and Lou, who provide a slide show of sites not to miss. All the other guests that we met were interesting, friendly people with varied interests. If you are someone who just wants to lie on the beach, then perhaps La Selva Mariposa isn't your best choice of lodging since it's about 20 minutes from the closest beach; but if you've come to see
the archeological sites, the cenotes, the jungle and the beaches, the location is wonderful and you will love it as much as we did and resolve to return again soon.

This elegant hidden gem was all that we had hoped it would be. Fabulous food and amazing attention to detail by our hosts of La Salva Mariposa. Our hosts generously shared their best tried and tested local tours, restaurants and beach clubs. We were able to see and participate in local offerings that we would have missed had it not been for their shared insights.
The food was amazing. We stayed for several days and no two breakfasts were the same. The thing they had in common was the outstanding quality and taste. The accomodations were romantic, spacious and very comfortable. We loved the end of the day when we returned from an evening out, to looked over the gate into the yard and see a magical garden light with soft light along paths and the welcoming sounds of waterfalls and the lure of our own plunge pool.
Thank you Lou and Mari so much for helping making our time at La Selva Mariposa so perfect.
I could go on for pages about La Selva Mariposa but you will just have to go and see for yourself. You wont be disappointed.

My family and I stayed at La Selva Mariposa and absolutely loved it. Great location for exploring the surrounding area of Coba. Moe & Lou's home is beautiful and cozy. They were excellent hosts and great company to share our vacation with. Breakfast every morning was delicious and unique. If you have any questions about day trips or vacation plans, don't hesitate to ask Moe and Lou, they know their stuff! Thank you for such an amazing and memorable time!

My husband and I traveled in the Yucatan Peninsula for a vacation this past December. We have traveled many places and stayed in some nice b&bs, but we agree that La Selva Mariposa is the most outstanding place we have ever stayed, anywhere. It was so peaceful and unique, a very local feeling off the beaten path, and was so much fun to stay in the jungle but with all the luxurious comforts of a four star hotel. We actually thought about cancelling our trip to Mexico because of safety concerns of our friends and in the US news, but after further research decided the Yucatan Peninsula did sound safe, and I am so glad that we went on the trip! It was amazing to experience Mexican culture and particularly many of the sites that were near the area of the b&b were some of our favorite of the whole trip. We rented a car and felt safe throughout our vacation. Our hosts at La Selva Mariposa thought of everything, were wonderful cooks and very hospitable. Would definitely recommend, this place is wonderful, the perfect getaway!

*Unique amenities* Steam pyramid, flowing water streams, lovely hosts, backdoor tour guides, and delicious hearty breakfasts, sustainably minded, outdoor shower, beautiful jungle landscaping, clean rooms with romantic ambiance. Tucked away and SAFE.

My boyfriend and I stayed at La Selva Mariposa and it was hands down the best bed and breakfast that we've been to so far and that is not an exaggeration. The rooms had a lot of character and were tastefully designed- we loved the outdoor shower in the bathroom that had a tree growing out of it. We slept deeply and woke up in the morning to a babbling fountain and bird song. Breakfast is served at the "palapa" and I tell you, you really get a HUGE breakfast with fresh fruit, juice, cereal/yogurt, freshly baked bread, and a delicious home-cooked main course by Lou or Moe.

The hosts are caring and very personable. They really want you to have a good time in Tulum and they are very knowledgeable about the area. In fact Moe is a writer and has written books about her experiences in Tulum. In our room we had their "backdoor tour guide" which maps out great adventures in the area with complete recommendations for food and sightseeing. We took their suggestions and had a wonderful time. At breakfast Lou will put on a slide show for the place you want to go so you can know what to suspect.

We love that the whole place (a hectare of lush jungle land) was designed for sustainability. The use of water and food is filtered and composted to return back to the land. Their B&B also contributed to the economy of the village and they encourage you to buy gifts at the local stores and eat at the local restaurants.

THE PLACE IS SAFE. It was so tucked away that we had a hard time finding it. That's why it's a jungle oasis, no one knows its there, so you don't have random people coming and going. Limited amount of guests stay there so it's not obnoxiously crowded with children and party pants. We had no problem leaving our luggage there. We didn't even lock the doors to our rooms or our cars. If you are still weary, Lou and Moe have security cameras and three very friendly dogs that would bark at "intruders".

Please go here if you are in the area. Way better than the impersonal resorts or expensive beach cabanas. Spend your time and money where it counts, to the local economy and earnest hosts.

We were looking to go on a trip somewhere warm, but wanted to stay away from all-inclusive. Looking on trip advisor with another couple, we found La Selva Mariposa sitting at #1 for B&Bs in Tulum. After our trip, I cannot imagine a better place to stay. We stayed for 6 nights, hosted by the ever-gracious Lou and Mari. The four of us were treated like royalty as described below:

- Every morning, we stuffed ourselves with exquisite gourmet breakfasts - these included fresh fruit and hot coffee/chocolate, and fruit juices.

- At any time we wished, we were able to consult with Lou and Mari regarding nearby sights to see. There is a LOT to do! We wished we had two weeks. They were very helpful with directions, best times to go to certain places, and excellent restaurant recommendations. This was all above and beyond the books in our rooms and in the common area that gave us very detailed descriptions of where, when and how to enjoy ourselves in the Tulum area.

- Nowhere was it more evident that beautifying one's environment is of physical, mental and spiritual benefit. The grounds, that were built from scratch by Lou and Mari, and absolutely gorgeous. Little details can be found everywhere, not on your first or second walkthrough, but we were discovering little surprised on the last day of our stay. Our rooms were simply beautiful (I'm now running out of adjectives!), and the jungle shower was a bonus. A word of warning, if you are insectophobic, you ARE staying in the jungle, so you may find a few critters that you wouldn't see in North America. But, they are all harmless. The rooms had air conditioning (we didn't need it), and ceiling fans.

- The ability to rent the Nissan Pathfinder from Lou and Mari was a blessing. Lou picked us up from the airport and dropped us off. Absolutely no hassle of car rental agencies, haggling, etc etc. So convenient!

- Although not on the beach, La Selva Mariposa is perfectly situated in a Pueblo just outside of the more touristy area of Tulum. A 20 minute drive to the beach is great - especially because there's a grocery store on the way where we would pick up fresh avocados, tortillas, salsa, and drinks for lunch on the beach.

I could go on and on, but really, I would recommend this place to anyone. Sure, if you have little kids, an all-inclusive might be more convenient, but we have decided that from now on, we are going to try to find similar places like La Selva Mariposa (might be a difficult task!) in other places we travel.

Thanks again for putting up with all our questions, and our 'oohs' and 'ash's Lou and Mari - hope to see you again in the future!
