Based on a recommendation from a friend, we spent 3 nights at La Selva Mariposa. It was a beautiful, quiet setting - perfect for relaxing. The owners, Mari & Lou, were very welcoming and friendly. Their attention to detail is amazing. They provided so much useful information on sites to visit, restaurants, etc. If you told them you were planning to go to Coba that day, they played a slideshow of pictures of the ruins and provided useful information on how to get there, where to eat, etc. So helpful. The breakfasts Mari and Lou made were delicious. One morning we had pancakes with bananas grown right on their property! And you should try Lou's famous margarita. It was delicious.

We stayed in suite #1 which was lovely. Very clean and comfortable. My husband was happy they had an AC unit in the room since he gets very hot while sleeping. But I would have been fine with the ceiling fan and windows open. They provided beach towels and mats, bug spray, flashlights. The soap and shampoo they provided are from the local honey place located down the street from the hotel. There was also a stocked mini fridge (complimentary) and coffee maker in the room. There was a fresh water jug in the room and water bottles for you to fill up for the day. They also provide a claw grabber thing to pick up bugs which was useful since we found a few jungle bugs in the room.

The property itself was absolutely beautiful. You really felt like you were in a jungle paradise. We relaxed in the pool, reading area, and the steam room. The steam room was an awesome feature.

It was easy to visit places from the hotel. It was a quick trip to Coba, Chichen Itza, Valladolid....Like other reviewers said, the hotel is located in a small town, so there are not a ton of restaurants in the immediate area, but there is a great one right across the main road. And there are good charcoal chicken places close by as well. And if you want a greater selection of restaurants, Tulum is a quick drive.

Going to La Selva Mariposa felt more like visiting family than staying at a hotel. We had a wonderful time and would definitely go back if we visit Tulum again.

This is a first. Thank you so much. We can see that you wrote this amazing review BEFORE you even unpacked your bags or hurried back to work. You mentioned so many things that I wanted to thank you for that have not been mentioned like the slide show at breakfast and the pix stick. We do our best to keep the jungle bugs from entering your quarters, but it is difficult with the open showers that guests adore and the pix sticks are a gentle want to put them outside in a friendlier environment. We look forward to your return visit to LSM.

We extended our stay here because we felt so relaxed and delighted by the whole place - the amazing attention to architectural detail, delicious breakfasts and welcoming hosts Mari and Lou have made this a must to go back next year..hate to say this because I would love to keep it a secret! A welcome respite from the bustle of Tulum..and easy to get back and forth to beaches, grocery, ruins. Don't miss the wonderful Mayan honey bee place nearby. I agree with what "love-hotel-livin" said about feeling a bit lost dinner wise as there isn't anything much nearby but we figured that out pretty quickly thanks to the abundant breakfast they serve, a substantial late lunch we would find at beach or ruins, and then snacks from either of the two grocery stores in town. Thanks for sharing your creativity and energy with the world and us, Mari and Lou, you have created a very inspiring place.

We love it when we can extend a stay, especially to such a gracious and fun couple. You are not too far away for a second visit. We will delight in that day. Thanks for taking the time to write such an incredible review.

I have been hesitant to visit Mexico. But, after our daughter went to La Selva Mariposa with her husband and raved about it, we decided to give Mexico a try So, we decided to get away from winter for a week at the end of February. We were picked up from the airport by Moe and used their car for the week. We met friends there and had a wonderful time. We drove to various ruins, the beaches and swam in cenotes. We ate great food. Mari and Lou have an abundance of resources to direct us to places we wanted to visit and restaurants in the area. Our room was lovely with a very creative shower. The resort is a beautiful gem: gorgeous grounds with flowers, waterfalls, porches, and hammocks. We took advantage of the spa with relaxing massages and they prepared a fantastic dinner our last night. We are recommending it to family and friends. It is not a place for children, but a romantic and fun adult get-away.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with other Trip Advisor travelers. I like that you mentioned the safety issue that so many people worry about these days traveling in Mexico. It is a beautiful country and this part, which is focused on tourism, is very safe. Thanks for telling everyone how great our Masseuse, Ariana, is. We feel so lucky to have her come to LSM to offer treatments to our guests. Thanks for coming and for telling others about the wonderful experience you had at our little oasis in the Mayan jungle.

We spent 4 nights here while exploring Coba, Muyil, cenotes, and Tulum. We found the place welcoming and our hosts Mari and Lou very knowledgable about the area even providing printed booklets with ideas and directions for dining, exploring, beach ideas, mayan sites, and cenotes. They also prepared a lovely dinner for us for my partner's birthday. They have a coffee bar for early risers which was very welcomed. We used their gas grill one night after buying groceries in Tulum which has a large super market. I look forward to their plans to expand their communal kitchen options!

thanks so much for the review. It is much appreciated. We do have plans to expand the dining area, but more for a more comfortable place to gather for a card game or to watch a movie on your laptop.

This beautiful oasis in the jungle was such a delight it was difficult to leave, either to see the sights about which they provided copious amounts of information or at the end of our stay. The breakfasts were generous, beautifully served and usually lasted us through the day, We had massages and they made our experience even better. Lou and Mo couldn't have been more welcoming and forthcoming with help and information. I felt like we'd landed in paradise and everywhere we looked it was clear there had been such attention to detail both in our room and on the grounds it was almost otherworldly. So why aren't we giving this the excellent rating the place really deserves? The issue for us (and some of the other guest, apparently) was dinner. We were far enough off the beaten track that there wasn't really anywhere we could go after a long, exhausting day enjoying the sights without driving 20 minutes into Tulum, which doesn't sound like much but if felt like a lot when all we wanted to do was walk to a nearby place or drive a mile or two for a simple dinner. There was one place to eat that was walkable and we ate there twice but the food wasn't particularly good, although the guacamole was excellent. I wonder whether there would be a take-out option that wouldn't create more work for Mo and Lou, who are already doing above and beyond for their guests, and support the local economy. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to get back there, dinner challenges notwithstanding, so maybe my real rating is 4 and 9/10ths but that wasn't an option.

Room Tip: When I return, if it's not the height of the season and therefore beyond my budget, I'd splu...

Nice review. Yes, Macario Gomez is in its infancy when it comes to interesting restaurants. Chachimba, in walking distance, is either loved for its friendly family atmosphere or found to be too different for US standards. There are a few other small restaurants as well, but they lack ambiance. We do prepare the special dinner with advanced reservation, and will make simple pizzas or quesadillas, but we like to promote the local places. Thanks for the wonderful review and we totally understand.

My wife and I stayed at La Selva Mariposa for five days (early March) after staying at one of the "grand hotels" at Cancun. We've traveled a great deal and can compare LSM with other places we've stayed at. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful, hidden paradise. The location is great, the grounds amazing, and Lou and Moe are just wonderful hosts. We immediately felt at home. The gardens are clearly the result of careful research and attention to detail. This is also reflected in the fittings and decoration in our accommodation (#2?). From individual water bottles to cold complimentary drinks in the fridge on arrival to great hammocks - everything was just right. We never did get a dip in the cenote pool; our loss. I won't repeat the good things others have written, describing LSM in greater detail. It's all true.

We took Lou up on the car rental/airport pickup and drop-of combo. It was very convenient and comparable to what you'd pay for car rental. The difference is that you get Lou's personal attention, great sightseeing tips, and a couple of hours each way of great conversation. Lou should have his own site!

We also have two evening dinners prepared by Moe and Lou. The meal, the wine and the beautifully lit pools, waterfalls, and trees made these dinners memorable in every way. They set a new standard for us in (I'm blushing now) romantic dining. La Selva Mariposa was the highlight of our stay in the Yucatan.

(Moe, Jane was so sorry she didn't get to say goodbye. We got lost in conversation with Lou (his fault entirely) and just got in the car and drove off... Maybe we'll be able to come again.

What can I say? -- we loved this place. My husband and I stayed here in our second week at tulum after having spent the first week at a beachside hotel. Mari and Lou have literally wrought a wonderful jungle oasis out in the little village of macario Gomez. The rooms are cool and calm, and thoughtfully decorated and provide a wonderful respite from the midday sun. The outdoor shower is fantastic. The grounds are beautiful and thoughtfully planted and landscaped with beaitful water features and dip pools The whole place respects the environment that it's situated in and is a testament to Mari and lou's hardwork and vision. They are consummate hosts (always there when needed, but giving us our privacy as well)and excellent cooks! The breakfasts are excellent! They are a font of information and gauged exactly what we wanted to do and were full of excellent tips. We rented their Honda-- which was excellent. And from here we explored the region thoroughly -- making daily excursions to various cenotes, Akumal beach, coba, chichen itza etc. we returned from our expeditions every day to the wonderful shady rooms and hammocks and grounds, and we're welcomed back always by their lovely dogs. We partook generously of lou's margaritas many evenings We celebrated my husbands birthday with one of their fantastic meals by the side of their 'waterfall'. It was a lovely evening with lovely food. We love this place. It may not be right be the beach, but it really doesnt need to be! It's a little gem in its own right (the beaches are very easy to access)-- especially perfect for exploring this part of Mexico..renting a car is essential to making the most out of your stay here.

Thanks for the amazing review. We totally appreciate it. We are seeing more and more travelers like yourself who are now splitting their Q.Roo vacation into the best of both worlds, partly staying on the beach and partly staying at LSM so they can immerse themselves into the natural beauty of the tropical jungle, cenotes and Mayan ruins as well as the gorgeous beaches of Tulum. Glad you mentioned this. We love preparing each breakfast and knowing there is something special for everyone. We hope you come back soon.
