The garden was beautiful, the cabanas were nice, there were hammocks on some of the porches and common areas if you needed to relax. There was complimentary breakfast and a kitchen that you were free to use. Not only were the staff very friendly, but there were so many common areas that we got to meet and make friends with some of our fellow travelers. I'm so glad we found this place!

We liked this spot. The rooms are very basic. But who spends time in the room when you're in a city with one of the most beautiful beaches in the world? The staff was amazing. The guy who works during the week really helped us out. It's about a 20 min bike ride and you can rent bikes at this place. The only downside - they have the worst pillows that we used in 3 months travels while staying at over 50 places. Might as well lay your head on a boulder

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a few nights in one of the economy cabanas. It was very basic with a bed and room for two bags, but not much else.

The grounds are very well kept with lush gardens and ample room to spread out in the common area. Free pancakes and coffee in the morning, as well as use of the kitchen and grill are a plus.

The negatives are the noise from the cats, cars and strip bar in the vicinity. The bikes we rented both got flats while we were miles from the hotel and when we went to shower that night there was no hot water.

The crowd is mostly in their mid 50's and there is a quiet vibe to the place. For the price you are right on the main street in Tulum, but a bit further from the beach.

My fiance and I arrived late at night in Tulum, and since we were both carrying 40 pound backpacks, we were anxious to find a hostel. We had written down a name and directions to a different hostel, where we stayed our first night- we payed $22 total to sleep in a huge dorm room, the night guard was asleep and unfriendly when we got there, and the kitchen was limited and dirty. The next day, we were able to explore Tulum more, and found Rancho Tranquillo. When you first walk in, you are struck by the beautiful and well maintained gardens. The kitchen is the biggest we've seen (my fiance and I traveled for four months, starting in Costa Rica and making our way north), and has everything you could ever need to cook your own food (and save TONS of money!). Rancho Tranquillo also has the biggest exchange library of any place we visited- three huge ceiling-to-floor bookshelves! They provide a yummy breakfast in the morning, two free computers, bike rentals, hammocks, and the best part is, we paid $22-the same we paid for dorms at the other hostel- for a private cabin!! The water in the showers are hot, the bathrooms are clean, the toilets are NEW, and most importantly, the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They can set you up for any tour you need. So in summary- STAY HERE!! We walked around to other hostels in Tulum just to make sure we were getting the best deal, and believe me, at Rancho Tranquillo, you are.

It's a nice place to stay for a night or two, or if you plan to rent an air con room. There is access to a big kitchen, inexpensive cramped little bungalows, a very nice garden.

But if you search around Tulum, there are much better deals in town & the beach is a nicer place to stay. I rented a little stick bungalow during hot summer months. They did not clean the bungalow for weeks at a time and acted inconvenienced when I asked for new sheets & for service. There were holes in the mosquito net and quite a bit of stagnant water in the garden with mosquito larvae . The vib was mixed (friendly/not so friendly), depending on the sobriety of the owner & the pack of retired alcoholic ex pats. There were issues with money & I was substantially overcharged without recourse. Make sure to make clear deals and collect receipts. Prices vary based upon bargaining power. Breakfast was simply a pancake.

I ended up moving to another place with cement walls and aircon, which was the same price as the hot mosquito infested bungalows.

I've traveled extensively and this is the first negative report I've written.

Stayed here for four nights in October and we loved it! The garden is beautiful and the cabanas are basic and a couple of torn mossie nets, but fun. We stayed in the private room for one night when I got sick and that was lovely- ensuite bathroom, TV, fridge! Its an outdoorsy sort of place- all the rooms and cabanas have their own entrance off the garden and the Barbq area, bar area and even the shared area (open plan kitchen, dining area, lounge) is open to the elements so be prepared for lizards (that shouldn't put you off though).

Staff are very friendly- the owner gave us a lift to the beach one day and the guy who works there made us pancakes and coffee in the mornings!

The only negative is probably that while we were there, staff and their families used the TV in the lounge area all evening which meant you couldn't watch anything. It was superquiet when we were there in October so maybe that's why. Oh and the bathrooms/showers are a bit basic and grotty, but fine.

Tulum is brilliant. Pepe (owner) told us that Tulum has the most beautiful beaches in all of Latin America- Mexico was our first of 15 countries visited through Central and South America and at the end of it, we had to agree!

We stayed there 1 night with some friends
Staff is kind, really cool.

LOCATION
In the center of Tulum, maybe 4-5km from the beach.
It's 5min walk for the Bus Station.
There are few cheap and good tacos stands around and a supermarket in front.

ROOMS
The rooms are inside a nice big garden where it's good to have a drink and relax. There are bungalows and little appartments.
Rooms are pretty small: 3m x 3m for a double bedroom.
There are only 3 shared bathrooms which are quite clean.
Cleanliness in the rooms is just OK.
The place seems to be quiet, but the rooms aren't soundproof at all, hope you're a good sleeper or your neightbour are quiet! (there was a party outside until 11pm and it was like it was inside our room!)

SERVICES
There is a shared kitchen with a fridge and a BBQ.
There's Free WIFI
There's also a book exchange service

It's a nice place for backpackers, very cheap, where you can meet many people.
