We stayed in the older section of the hotel (soon to be divided from the newer / sleeker rooms) and like another reviewer mentioned, I hadn't seen many reviews from the older section so thought we would share our experiences.
My husband and I were travelling to Mexico for our honeymoon and we stayed for 5 nights in Tulum- the 3 nights at this hotel were the most we paid for any accommodation on our entire trip; we should have gone the extra bit for a newer room, but figured that the beachfront king rooms in the older section would still be great (and weren't cheap) as we aren't too fussy of travellers.
These rooms definitely need some love and upkeep. Screen doors would be nice (if we left the doors open then the room would be filled with bugs- and we didn't want the doors closed all the time!), and a general refreshing would make a big difference.
We had room 17 which was right on the end- so not at all private. It was right next to the walkway to the beach from reception and an outdoor shower. There were constantly people walking by while we were on the terrace. Also next to the new section where there were workers right next to us all day. Not what we had in mind for a honeymoon!
There was a really strong chemical odour in the room when we arrived that didn't dissipate for a day or more (maybe roach spray?)
Service generally was really great (even though they wouldn't switch our rooms!) and breakfast was decent, though definitely not spectacular. service at the bistro restaurant was great.
We stayed at many places on our trip that felt special because the hosts really felt like they put love and care into their accommodations - this place did not feel like that at all. Maybe it's too much to expect such a thing for a busy stretch of Tulum beachfront, but a little care and attention goes a long way.
That said, the beach is fantastic and waking up with the ocean on your doorstep seemed to make it all ok!
My advice would be to either spring for the newer/nicer rooms or find another hotel on the beach. The value really wasn't there for the older beachfront rooms. There are plenty of hotels along this stretch of beach that all had great rooms for more affordable prices.
