First time in a Dreams resort which was recommended by a friend. Overall the resort is beautiful. From the main building / lobby, the hacienda buildings, restaurants, and bars to the beautiful gardens, the overall feel is that of an older statelier resort. But if you look closely you start seeing that the some parts of the hotel are in need of repairs and renovation specially in the main lobby building. We upgraded to the adult swimout section which was heavenly for a fairly small amount. Our suite was very nice and spacious. The bathroom was wonderful. The small porch has a hammock which I used a lot. Only problem were the mosquitoes which lurk by the entrance of the suites and no matter how fast you close the door, they sneak in. It doesn't help that the housekeeping staff leave the doors open because they need access to their carts. We were literary bitten at least 20 times nightly until we bought mosquito repellent which does not have a nice bedtime fragrance. The mini fridge was never cold. We called to have someone look at it and he just fiddled with the controls (which I had previously done) and said it was fixed. The food was beautifully presented and was actually pretty good. The best thing is no reservations are required for any of the restaurants. We never waited for seating. Both pools were very nice. Plenty of seating but many of the chairs need to be either painted, cleaned, or replaced. If you are used to the Caribbean beaches, you will not find it here. This was a great disappointment for us. When I checked out the resort location in Google Earth, I realized we were right in the middle of a very long reef. But I had already paid and confirmed our reservation. Lesson learned. It's very rocky and has very limited sand floor swimming area. But still the ocean looks beautiful and the seaside grill restaurant is the best place to enjoy the view. One big plus: the service is fantastic. They actually remember our names and go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and having a great time. All in all, we enjoyed our stay but would not go back to that Dreams resort.

Room Tip: If you can and want to really get away from everything and relax, upgrade to the swimout. It's r...

Having traveled to the Mayan Riviera multiple times and stayed in several locations the key is knowing what your looking for from the experience.
We were looking for a safe, less commercial environment at a mid-size resort. Not flash/Disney style. It was PERFECT. Not ever crowded or fighting for a beach chair or towel. No wait for service or a table and the staff was extremely friendly. (IF you give a few $'s tip at the pool or beach you will get bend over backwards great service)
An all-inclusive is an all-inclusive. That being said...if your looking for an exceptional dining experience you should try some local restaurants - there are some good ones, but the resort food was way above average for an all-inclusive and we never went hungry. If your kids are craving something more familiar - the pizza at the pool grill was really good. Our favorites were the guacamole and the sushi bar was a very pleasant surprise. The Sky Bar is a great little sports bar/restaurant if you need some air conditioning. The waiter there - I can't remember his name...is so nice and bends over backwards to make it enjoyable.

When we arrived we upgraded to the beachfront villas in buildings 15 and 16. $300 per room for the week and it was worth every penny. The convenience to run back and grab something and use the restroom was priceless. Right by the beach, pools, restaurants and bars. Things were hopping at night in the plaza behind the buildings but quickly got quiet by 11pm and the rooms are well insulated.

The beach was beautiful, and well groomed everyday. It's bit rocky in the water but there is a good size roped off part that is rock free.

As for off the resort excursions - we were a party of 5-7. We don't really like group tours so we hired drivers for the entire day for about $140 American for 8 hours or so.. Ask for Moses at the cab stand in advance. Even though he was booked for the 2nd day we wanted to go out he arranged another driver. EX. We went to Chichen Itza, the local Cenote, and had lunch at a local hotel for just under what we would have paid for the tour bus. We were on our time not the tours - love that! If you are with Cheap Caribbean or Apple vacations type booking their concierge will discourage you from doing this. We did it anyway with no regrets. The staff at the hotel keeps track of who you are and who you're going with etc. Felt safe.

We would return to this resort in a heartbeat on a next trip to the area. That's saying a lot since we've been 7 times and always felt we needed to try somewhere new.

Room Tip: If location is important to you for beach and pool access I highly recommend buildings 15&16 sui...

We went to Dreams Tulum for a family wedding over the 4th of July Weekend. Our flight from EWR to Cancun went without a hitch.

Upon arrival to Cancun, after the long lines at customs, we were greeted by the AMSTAR "supervisor". They are the company the resort uses for transportation. He immediately tried to get us to sign up for an hour and a half vacation package sales meeting. To reserve your spot for this, you'll need $20.00 deposit. We didn't go.

The resort is 1.5 hours away from Cancun airport. Make sure you bring reading materials.

Upon our arrival to the resort we were greeted by the sweetest staff with fresh towels and champagne in hand. Check in was a breeze. They do try to get you to upgrade for a "low" rate. You can haggle. ;)

Our room was a garden view and was very quiet. We were 50 steps to the beach! The room was clean and spacious with a separate sitting area with a ceiling fan. The bed was very comfortable. Free wifi... All of the search engines come up in spanish. Cable TV: most of the channels are in Spanish. The air conditioning was ok. We left our ac and ceiling fan on the entire time. There is a full bar in room, the refrigerator did not work well, all of the beverages were warm all the time. In room bar selection: all bottled, corona, fruit punch, orange juice, water, coca cola, diet coca cola, sprite and tonic water.

Maid service was very very good! Room service was excellent (if you don't mind waiting 35-40 minutes). You're on vacation.. you have plenty of time! :D

The resort grounds are meticulously kept and picturesque. Beautiful flowers everywhere!

The main pool was lots of fun! The entertainment staff work very hard to get everyone to join in the fun. We tried water aerobics, much fun! The swim up bar was convenient however, they did have staff walking around taking drink orders. Nice touch. I ordered a cosmopolitan, they brought over a cocktail glass with fruit punch and vodka. o.O all the other drinks were great!

The beach has one area which is roped off and safe for swimming. Although it looks like a small area, there was plenty of room for everyone. The rest of the beach was rocky...

Our favorite restaurant was Ocean Breeze. We also ate at Portofino's which was pretty good. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and delicious. The lunch and dinner buffet at the World Cafe are hit or miss...more miss... The Mexican restaurant was fabulous! Don't miss that one! The Coco Cafe was a mini Starbucks! Delicious coffee and treats. They are not big on desserts... The food portions were small. Potatoes tasted like the boxed kind (spuds). A baked potato is a quarter of a potato.

Some good; some bad points IMHO
July 8, 2014
The Good:
Food was edible; dinners are the highlight
Rooms had cool ac
Beach was beautiful
Staff wonderful and overly friendly
Great drinks
Comfortable beds
Secluded location
Close to Cenotes; which we LOVED
Nice rooms
Alcohol selection no complaints
Coffee bar was our favorite

The Bad:
Distance from Cancun airport over 1 hour
Pool and resort need renovating
Some food is not fabulous at lunch
Don't go without your children
Not a romantic getaway
Coral beach is painful
Hard sell on being a CLUB MEMBER
You must ask to have your room cleaned everyday
Damp mildew odor is in every building
Don't upgrade to preferred; not worth it

I have traveled to every island in the Carribbean; mostly all inclusive. I have stayed in the worst and the best. This resort is not horrible, but not amazing either. Considering what we paid, I absolutely cannot complain. I would not go again because of the amount of children at the resort. Everyone is super friendly and bends over backward to make sure you are having a great time. Family's would definitely have a better experience.

Room Tip: Ask for your upgrade when you get there. It will be a minimal cost but so worth it. Stay as close...

Dear Greg704

Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion about your stay at our resort, we are glad to hear that you highlighted many positives in your feedback, thank you for you for highlighting our personalized service, our location most of our facilities.

On the other hand we are sorry to learn we could not go beyond your expectations. We would like to inform that our rooms are cleaned daily, except when our guests enable the do not disturbing sign at the entrance of the room.

We apologize if you found that the Preferred Club status, amenities and the Ocean Front room did not meet with your expectations.

We would like to comment that our beach is in front of the worlds second largest coral reef barrier, we inform that we have a good spot by the Seaside Grill for swimming.

We sincerely hope you give us another opportunity as we are confident that we will surpass your expectations on a new visit to our resort.

We were there to attend my nephew's wedding. I will start with the good points first: The wedding on the beach was beautiful, as was the reception that was held in the ballroom. It truly was a lovely evening with impeccable service. The food was also very good as well. They had an excellent band that played until 1:00am. The wedding coordinator did an outstanding job. The manager, who is from the U.S., threw an amazing 4th of July party. There was a foam party in the pool, complete with a great band and a ton of beach balls being tossed about. That evening there was a fabulous beach barbeque with a band again and other entertainment as well making for a really fun night. Yoga on the beach with Trenna was very relaxing and enjoyable. We had a nice massage on the beach. I would recommend Selene. The bed and linens were clean and comfortable. We had dinner in the wine cellar our last night there. It was very nice, a great atmosphere. We loved Manuel and Rigoberto. The service was fantastic. We would definitely recommend dinner there. In order to eat there you have to spend at least $50 on a bottle of wine. Manuel suggested a bottle of Mexican wine for us that was $57 and it was very good. The experience was worth the extra money.

The bad: We paid extra for the Preferred Club. It's not worth the extra money. They did provide us with a private check in but it was no big deal. We had ocean front rooms, but the rooms that other family members stayed in closer to the lobby were much nicer and looked like they were recently renovated. Our rooms seemed much smaller than theirs. When we entered our room, the door to the bathroom vanity was laying on the floor and the toilet seat was nearly falling off. It was, however, promptly fixed when we informed the front desk. Housekeeping never left washcloths and we had to call the front desk to get some. As mentioned previously by other guests, the mini bar is somewhat of a joke. Not much of a selection, it was never cold and we had to repeatedly ask for water. The pool did not have enough chairs for the amount of guests, and as at many other resorts, the towel game was being played at full force. Be prepared to be hounded by the Spa employees trying to sell you spa packages when you go to towel hut. The swim up bartenders were clearly overwhelmed and you had to wait forever to get a drink. Make sure you ask for the better alcohol or they will give you the cheap stuff. They have four beach beds that were available for the price of $45 per day which I thought was a little ridiculous. I have been to other all-inclusive resorts that provide them at no extra cost. The beach looks pretty, but it is very rocky. Bring your water shoes!! If you are a beach walker you will be very disappointed. We found that if you head down toward the right and can get past the rocks there is a beautiful stretch of beach with gorgeous rock-free sand and you can walk a good distance. There is just a small section in which to swim in front of the resort and it was always very crowded. I will say the lifeguards were top notch. We watched them rescue an elderly couple that became stranded on one of the small sailboats you can take out. They were also right on top of the situation when two small crocodiles were spotted in the water next to the resort. They did a great job getting everyone out of the water and capturing the crocodiles. There is not much in the way of entertainment in the evening, but we did enjoy the bar close to the beach at night.

The UGLY: Quite a few people in our group became ill, while several were violently sick. One husband called for the hotel doctor concerning his wife and was told they could arrange for a taxi to take them to a local hospital but the hotel could not be responsible for the cost. Needless to say, she just rode it out. I will say I saw the cook at the pool grille wash and sanitize his hands after touching raw hamburgers. But........at the swim up bar I saw them wash the glasses they used and I was completely grossed out. The workers collect them from around the pool and beach and then dump them behind the bar. They then proceeded to just swish them around in some water then dump them in a bucket and put them back on the shelf. It hardly looked sanitary to me! Also, at the omelette station the cook used his fingers to put the ingredients on it. So, I'm not really sure what could have caused some of us to be sick, but these may have been a contributing factor.

We had a wonderful time with our family and it is a very nice place for a wedding, but there are things that need improved upon. Bring your immodium and pepto.

Dear kmf5621

First of all I would like to thank you for taking the time to write your review regarding your recent stay at our resort

It is our pleasure to read that you enjoyed your nephew's wedding and thank you for mentioning the excellent service provided by our staff, we certainly had a wonderful 4th of July party, we are glad to know you were here with us to enjoy it.

We are sure that Manuel and Rigoberto will be happy to know that their good job is appreciated and we are sure that they will find motivation to keep up the god job with your kind words.

Thank you for your kind comments about our lifeguards, they are all certified ready to react for any emergency situation in our beach area.

We are surprised to read that the private check in and the Ocean Front room did not meet with your expectations, we truly apologize for the issues you found when you arrived at the room, we will definitely reinforce our housekeeping supervision to avoid the recurrence of the situations you experienced with the washclothes, the minibar and others.

We are increasing the number of our chairs and our palapas currently, we are sorry if you felt uncomfortable with the spa Concierge in our towel center, they only do their job to offer the best treatments and information for our guests.

Thank you for your suggestions for future travelers about our beach, we have a nice beach as you mentioned, due to our proximity to the 2nd worlds largest corral reef, it could be rocky in some areas. However as many other reviews mentioned, we also have great spots for swimming.

The beach beds cost 40 USD per day and includes the personalized service of our beach butler and wait staff, however it is optional for our guests as we have deck chairs, umbrellas and palapas for a comfortable beach day.

We are surprised to hear that it took a long time to get drinks at our pool bar, as we have many positive comments and reviews about the bar service in our resort, we will share your comment to our F&B manager for his follow up. Regarding the allegation of sicknes we inform that all of our guests comments are taken seriously, we will definitely let our chef know about the situations you mentioned as they are not part of our strict hygiene quality control.

We inform that Inspection of raw materials are done, in order to ensure that no poor quality products are used. This includes auditing our suppliers, in their production and distribution systems.

Carrying out checks on our processes to ensure that the equipment, ingredients, buildings and temperatures are correct. This procedure considers that the people involved in this process have the required knowledge of food-hygiene control and standards.

Inspection of our final food product to ensure that no poor quality loaves are sent to the consumer.

Again we apologize for any bad experience you experienced during your stay, we truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back and change the poor perception you have formed of us.

Sincerely

We just returned from Dreams Tulum a few days ago and it was just incredible! This was our first time to Mexico but not our first time at a Dreams Resort, we have stayed at Dreams Palm Beach in Punta Cana about 9 times so when we wanted to plan our trip to Mexico it was obvious that we were going to keep our business in the Dreams chain. This resort is amazing, from the staff, food, room and pool we had the best time! Our room was in the new adults only section with swim out, it was very nice and quiet and having the convenience of the pool off your terrace was great! In the afternoon when we wanted to get away from the loud main pool we went back to our pool and relaxed in peace and quiet for the rest of the day. I have to give a big huge thank-you to Antonio and his staff in the Preferred Club, he came through with every request we had no questions asked and took care of us very quickly each and everytime.....he is a star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eduardo the pool/beach butler was also a star, he was alsways asking if we needed anything and would do anything you asked of him. All of the staff were always wiling to help in anyway they could at the drop of a dime. We had the pleasure of meeting Alex the GM and he was such a grat host, he took care of us like we were royalty and we more than appreciate everything he did for us! The restaurants were so good, our favourites for dinner were Portofino(italian), Seaside Grill and El Patio(mexican), And a special thank-you to the chef for preparing such an amazing special dinner on our last night there in the wine cellar. We at lunch mostly at the Barefoot Grill or orderd Seaside Grill from our chairs poolside....these were both great lunch choices....the homemade guacamole and salsa is to die for!! We spent all of our time at the main pool and we loved it! The grounds at the resort are so beautiful and we saw quite a bit wildlife when we were there. There has been alot of love put into this resort and you can tell...............it is spectacular! We miss it already and cannot wait to return soon.

Room Tip: We did the adults only preferred club swim out.

My husband and I just returned from Dreams Tulum. We brought our 16 and 19 year old with us.
The girls really enjoyed themselves but the resort lacked activities for this age group. It had many activities for the younger kids but not much for young adults or adults.
The rooms were beautiful and the staff was nice.
The food was okay not great.

I would recommend this resort to families.

The beach was not great. There was many rocks and we didn't have a allot of room to swim.
The sand was nice but that's about it for the beach. I would suggest you don't go there for the beach.

The resort is 1 hour and 20 minutes away from Cancun airport. If you have young kids make sure they go to the washroom before leaving the airport.

There was one staff member that really stood out from everyone there. His name is Mateo.

He did the Tequila tasting and was also our bartender and he was very pleasant to talk with and friendly.
