“Excellent Refuge from the Storm”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

We were in Tulum on what was supposed to be a sun filled return trip to Quintana Roo/ Yucatan. Maybe my 15th-20th trip to the area. We were greeted by Hurricane Ingrid that persisted all through the entire week we were there. We had planned to go from Playa to Chichen Itza through Tulum bu the weather was so bad that it was clear that Chichen Itza would be a washout. So we needed a place to stay in Tulum and found the Don Diego de la Selva on Tripadvisor. Rate was excellent so we went and were immediately pleased. Wonderful hosts. The owners are French and very hospitable. The place was delightful. A huge palapa for breakfast and dinner. The rooms are very clean and new, each with a patio/hammock. Wifi not the best but it works at the palapa. If you've been to Tulum, you know that hotels can be cheap or can be nice, but not usually both. This place was great for the money. Love the fact that there isa community refrigerator and refill station for water.

It is a little hard to find the first time as you think you are leaving town. But the location is great and very convenient when you find it. Once you get far enough down the main Carretara, there is a sign on the road. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. Great vibes in the owners and staff. They raise honey and as other have noted, they use bee/honey based products. Just a nice touch, but representative of the place.

Spent the night here on the way to Palenque. Staff were attentive, rooms well appointed, beds comfortable, and air worked great. The owner keeps bees - milapoa - so they don't sting. All soap and shampoos were bee products which I thought was an interesting "hook". Do buy some of the honey - very fruity.
Its tucked back off he road so don't be shy about asking for directions. Last road at the end of town.

We stayed here in October. The good news was that we had a great rate. The bad news was that the restaurant is closed for dinner in the low season (but still open for breakfast).

The room we had was spacious and had a private patio with a hammock. The bed was firm. Although the free WiFi is only guaranteed in the lobby and dining area, we could also receive it in our room.

One very nice touch was a communal refrigerator with a water cooler supplied by a large (perhaps 20 litre) bottle. This provided a generous supply of safe, cold water. We refilled our personal bottles frequently, and drank more water - and were better hydrated - than if we had relied on purchases from convenience stores. It also generated a lot less plastic waste.

Although the hotel is right on the edge of town, Tulum is so small that it hardly makes a difference. Even crossing the main road is easy, thanks to a conveniently located police checkpoint. (The police had some helpful advice on restaurants.)

Wow we found the paradis. The place is very clean, the onwers are very nice, the Man speak french, english, spanish. The pool is like a dream with the garden. Tanks a lot for my perfect time. The breakfast is so good with food from there. I find the paradis.

In Tulum you can find this beauty option in down town, comfortable, clean and charming rooms are waiting for you. The staff is very friendly and kind; excelent and tasteful continental breakfast is offered, delicious bread is done at home.

I recommed this hotel very much, surely my option in an future trip.

My wife and I decided at the last minute to drive to Tulum due to a forced change in our original itinerary. We had a borrowed 2008 Rough Guide and decided to give this hotel a look as it appealed the most from those suggested (no Internet in the car & we were tired). We loved it at 1st sight and got a good deal as it was low season.
It's at the southern end of Tulum town but still well located, especially if you have a car. It's quiet, secure (has a wall all around the premises and the gates are locked after 10pm - they give you a key obviously) and the grounds are lovely (lots of plants, trees, decent size pool and v well kept).
Rooms are bright, spotlessly clean, modern and have flair). Lots of hot water, fan & a/c, decent size terrace w/ hammock & chairs, plug-in insect repellant provided, comfy bed. No safe or fridge but there's a fridge/freezer outside room 8 where you can put your drinks/ice etc.
Charming outside restaurant w/ thatched roof overlooks gardens/pool. 3 course dinner available nightly for 250 pesos or you can have 1 or 2 courses for less. We haven't tried it yet but if the breakfast is anything to go by it'll be awesome. Complimentary breakfast includes fresh juice, good coffee, teas, toasted bread w/ homemade jams or honey made on the premises plus a choice of 3 "main" options (my wife had fruit w/ yoghurt & granola, I had eggs/ham dish that was absolutely superb).
Staff are great. Helpful, courteous, professional, knowledgeable. French owner has been here 10 years. Sabrina was awesome. our laundry was meant to be 24 hrs but was done by late afternoon same day.
Maybe in high season when the weather is better we'd prefer to be on the beach but then you'd pay more, not be so central, not have proper plumbing & (from what I've read) not have hot water 24/7.
This place oozes style, class, flair (that European touch?) and we found nothing irksome as you often do w/ budget accommodation in Mexico. Highly recommended!

Honest, sweet hardworking people, an AMAZING continental breakfast and happy, clean rooms!
Conveniently located in the city among great people, communities and restaurants, and the place just has a certain je ne sais quoi to it! I'd love to go back; I wish they sold their bath products but only guests get their beautiful honey-based bath items. One of the hotel owners is a bee keeper so they serve fresh honey at breakfast and you can buy it as well. The bees are Mayan bees! Such an interesting species! They have a lovely swimming pool too. For someone who's not used to traveling solo, this place felt very safe and the people staying there as well as the staff are very friendly. <3
I do apologize; I took some great pics while I was there but have been having issues with uploading my images.
