Don Diego de la Selva
Ranked #18 of 101 Hotels in Tulum
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 9, 2012

We have spent a week in the Don Diego de la Selva in November 2011.
The hotel is located in the south end of Tulum pueblo, and is more convenient for people with their own car though it iseasy to walk to the center.
A series of bungallows is set in a jungle-like garden. The bungallows are nice and clean, even if not luxurious. The swimming pool was also clean. Two things have made our journey excellent: The very nice people in the hotel - always ready to give a tip on what to look at, finding good guides for excursions or diving, or just for a chat. And the restaurant, really the best we encountered during our 3 weeks journey in Yucatan.
I strongly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Unless you really need aircondition, better select the garden bungallows.

After looking at the over-expensive, mostly rough and dusty huts on the coastline, we were delighted to find this gem just off the main street at the southern end. French-run, it has a pool and bright, cool, clean rooms. Staff were hospitable and helpful, and the price includes breakfast. We enjoyed the evening meals, too. Good value.

We had a pleasant 2-night stay in an air-conditioned room. The mattress was too hard for our liking, and the room was slightly musty (though clean), but otherwise we had no complaints. We liked the skylight in the shower, and the hammock and small but well-maintained garden. The best part for us was the restaurant, with its atmospheric thatched roof—very romantic at night, and the service was excellent.

My husband and I returned for the fourth time to Don Diego de la Selva and again were not disappointed. They always seem to find the most pleasant people to work there. Charles and Stefano are wonderful hosts and Sabrina was lovely. Leonardo prepared wonderful dinners and even responded to a special request from my husband. We look forward to visiting our friends again soon, especially Minh.

If you want a small, quiet, but friendly hideaway in the jungle then this fits the bill. Its on the Southern fringes off town but walkable into the centre, but you'll need transport to get to the beach. The facilities are simple but all you need; air-con, fan, clean room. The rooms are arranged around a central courtyard where breakfast is served and each has a little veranda looking out onto the lush gardens. We didn't have any mosquito problems but maybe it was the time of year. There were a few ants in the room, but only to be expected given the setting. There's no TV, which was fine by us but an in-room fridge would have been nice and the WIFI is pretty hit and miss. Also the walled garden and trees make it a bit dark in the rooms. We also found that people often walked thru the gardens thus intruding on your privacy as they could look straight into your room.

The breakfast service was rather slow and we found it a bit unsubstantial (although you can order eggs for an extra charge) bread, jam, juice and the typically weak mexican coffee, sometimes some fruit.

But overall the experience is pretty good but I think it needs to do a bit more to justify the price and with these little niggles, falls just that bit short of excellent.

We stayed here one night. We chose a room with two beds and a hammock-but only got a room with one bed and no hammock. The place was nice and clean. I loved the bathroom, but it seemed a little overpriced.

We stayed @ Don Diego de la Selva for just 2 nights, and it was wonderful! The room was clean the staff was very friendly and helpful. The bed was seriously firm. The quaint breakfast that was served was very good. Simple, (just toasted bread and jams, but yummy) Plenty of hot water, the patio was nice and quiet. The pool looked beautiful, but we didn't have time to take a dip. We had a rental car, but you could tour the city by bicycle or walking. The beaches are a short distance away and are beautiful! Our trip was to explore options for next year and we will be back.
