Mezzanine Colibri Boutique Hotel
Ranked #4 of 98 Hotels in Tulum

My new husband and I stayed at Mezzanine for 6 days this April. It was fantastic. We loved every minute of our trip. We had room #4 - an ocean view room on the end of the deck furthest from the restaurant. The room was spotlessly clean with a huge, extremely comfortable bed. We could see the ocean from our bed and enjoyed using the indoor loft to store our suitcases. I would definitely recommend upgrading from the ground floor rooms, as they have absolutely no view and face the parking lot. No air conditioning in the rooms, but you don't need it. There was a great fan and a constant ocean breeze that kept us cool. The bathroom was also great with a nice rain-style shower equipped with hot water.

Things you will like about Mezzanine:
1. The rooms (I already hit on this). They are awesome.
2. The beach. White sand, turquoise blue water. Beautiful. In addition to beach access, Mezzanine also has some shaded "cabanas" and comfortable deck areas that were great for my husband and I (we both burn easily so the shade was a blessing!).
3. The food. The restaurant is fantastic. Everything we had was delicious. It might seem a bit pricey for some, although at the end of our stay, we were happy with our bill for the quality of the food we received.
4. The bar. 2 for 1 margaritas during the day. Delicious martinis. Cold beer. Enough said.
5. The ambiance. A hip atmosphere with cool music and a laid back attitude. Very relaxing.
6. The service. Vanessa from the office was extremely helpful. The waiters and barstaff were friendly and skilled. The maids always did a great job on our room.

Things you might not like about Mezzanine:
1. The constant breeze (gusty wind!) on the beach. There is a constant wind in Tulum. We liked this but others could find it annoying.
2. The Friday night party. Be mentally prepared for this. It is LOUD.
3. Small pool. This did not bother us, because we swam in the ocean. If you're looking for a huge pool, this may not be the place for you. The pool they have is nice and clean and refreshing and is perfect for a quick dip, but it is tiny.

My husband and I spent some time biking around Tulum and Mezzanine has got to be one of the nicest hotels around. There were some pretty sketchy looking places. Mezzanine was safe, relaxing, romantic and just fabulous all the way around. I really can't say enough about how great our honeymoon was.

From the minute we checked in with Vanessa to the day we left, our time at Mezzanine was absolutely lovely. Since it was our honeymoon, we splurged and upgraded to suite #10 (private sun deck -- perfect for watching the sun rise, fantastic soaking tub, lounge area and the most comfy bed). We originally had a ground floor room which was ok, but one side was under the deck and the other faced the little parking lot and road. I would also recommend the 4 beach facing rooms as well.

The staff was extremely hard working, attentive and friendly (management, kitchen/wait staff, housekeeping, bartenders, security) the food was amazing (nice to take a little break from Mexican food and get Thai a couple of times. Best breakfast and smoothies in Tulum!) and overall vibe was great.

I will definitely be recommending Mezzanine to everyone!! It has to be one of the top 3 hotels in the area. They've nailed the balance between true eco consciousness and comfortable chic.

My wife and I really enjoyed Mezzanine, but it was quite expensive compared to some of the other locations on the beach. It did have a lot to offer that other hotels did not (electricity, running water).

The restaurant at Mezzanine was fantastic. My wife and I had to force ourselves to try other restaurants in the area.

The beach was perfect. It was quiet by Mezzanine, but a short walk on the beach, you could find a livelier area if that is what you were looking for.

I'm writing this after reading some people people's reviews that seem odd to me. We spent a full week at Mezzanine in February and enjoyed our stay thoroughly. The rooms were beautiful and I've never seen cleaning ladies spend as much time cleaning hotel rooms. With reports of thefts at other local cabana hotels we put everything in the safe at the start of the vacation and as the week progressed and we were more confident of the staff we left many items out in the room (even small cash). Nothing was ever touched. The building is secure and everybody watches out for eachother it seems. The layout is extremely safe too and there is a security guard in the nighttime hours behind a large heavy gate.
The Friday night party is fun and over the top, with fire and stilt-walkers. We had an international DJ Baby J who spun a couple of times and it was lots of fun. If you complain about Friday night, you didn't visit the website or Trip Advisor or you're too old...(5 hours of dance music won't kill anybody). The restaurant is outstanding, the food delicious and the service quick. My only negative comment would be with regards to service which could be done with a slightly more personal touch and less military precision. The location at the end of the beach makes it perfect for long beach walks, the loungers and beds are comfortable for laying out in the sun and with a limited number of suites the place never feels busy.
My wife and I love the boutique hotel experience worldwide and Mezzanine did not disappoint. A couple other tips on Tulum, Hechizos provided probably the best meal on the beach strip (the owner is a smooth operator and takes pride in his establishment); El Tabano has great food but terrible service - picture an female shotputter from the East Boc as your waitress; Posada Margherita had friend service and tasty fish.

We were robbed at Mezzanine last week. We felt it was an inside job considering the circumstances. Be very careful!!!

Just to be clear about this situation, the robbery occurred from your car, while you were eating in our restaurant. You were not guests of the hotel at that time and so you were NOT robbed from your a room. Also there was no evidence of damage to the car, so the police presumed that it had been left unlocked.
Of course being robbed anywhere under any circumstances is a traumatic experience. We do have security inside the hotel premises, but not on the street. We would like to warn all guests in the future, both of the hotel and the restaurant, to please make sure you lock your vehicles and do not leave anything of value visible through the windows. Prevention of theft is the best way!

My husband and I stayed at the Mezzanine for our honeymoon last July. We had the most fantastic stay - the hotel is IN a nature reserve and therefore has to be environmentaly friendly which is important to us. We stayed in one of the suites and can say that they were exactly like in the pictures on their website.
The hotel was super romantic, with no kids (which is what you want when you're on honeymoon) and literally ON THE BEACH. The plunge pool is more than sufficient and a welcome break from the relentless mexican sun. We spent most of our time, by the pool side sipping marguerittas.
The party on Friday was very good - they do warn you on their website that it is very loud, but we loved it.
The food was very good, although if you are there for more than a few days it does become a bit tiresome...
Breakfast was fantastic - specially the banana pancakes :-) and the smoothies/juices really delicious.
We are both vegetarians and can say that the restaurant catered well for us.
They had a good selection of DVDs you can have on loan too.
Finally - the staff were wonderfully friendly and polite, helpful and welcoming. The room was always impecably clean no matter how late we got out of bed.
I do have to say, that some of the review I have read on trip advisor, sound as though they were written by people staying at other places, particularly the one that says the hotel does not have a beach! As for the one that moans about the music - I would say that they clearly didn't got to the Mezzanine's website, or read trip advisor or read any of the posters on reception...

This was a superior 'boutique' hotel on a beautiful stretch of beach. The food was just excellent, and the staff couldn't do enough for you. You could go to sleep listening to the ocean, and wake up to the sunrise. The hotel manager made sure we did and saw everything on our list, provided driving directions, snorkeling equipment, and made reservations for us in advance. We would go back, but not Friday night.
Don't stay on Friday night. They advertise a party, which we were looking forward to. What happpened was over 4 hours of computer-generated 'Techno' music, and was attended by about 80 - 100 young adults from other hotels in the area. And boy was it loud! Then at 1:30, they turned it up!! Don't let the pictures on the website fool you. This party did not reflect the clientele staying on the property.
