“Super Chilled Out Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2009

I'm writing this after reading some people people's reviews that seem odd to me. We spent a full week at Mezzanine in February and enjoyed our stay thoroughly. The rooms were beautiful and I've never seen cleaning ladies spend as much time cleaning hotel rooms. With reports of thefts at other local cabana hotels we put everything in the safe at the start of the vacation and as the week progressed and we were more confident of the staff we left many items out in the room (even small cash). Nothing was ever touched. The building is secure and everybody watches out for eachother it seems. The layout is extremely safe too and there is a security guard in the nighttime hours behind a large heavy gate.
The Friday night party is fun and over the top, with fire and stilt-walkers. We had an international DJ Baby J who spun a couple of times and it was lots of fun. If you complain about Friday night, you didn't visit the website or Trip Advisor or you're too old...(5 hours of dance music won't kill anybody). The restaurant is outstanding, the food delicious and the service quick. My only negative comment would be with regards to service which could be done with a slightly more personal touch and less military precision. The location at the end of the beach makes it perfect for long beach walks, the loungers and beds are comfortable for laying out in the sun and with a limited number of suites the place never feels busy.
My wife and I love the boutique hotel experience worldwide and Mezzanine did not disappoint. A couple other tips on Tulum, Hechizos provided probably the best meal on the beach strip (the owner is a smooth operator and takes pride in his establishment); El Tabano has great food but terrible service - picture an female shotputter from the East Boc as your waitress; Posada Margherita had friend service and tasty fish.

We were robbed at Mezzanine last week. We felt it was an inside job considering the circumstances. Be very careful!!!

Just to be clear about this situation, the robbery occurred from your car, while you were eating in our restaurant. You were not guests of the hotel at that time and so you were NOT robbed from your a room. Also there was no evidence of damage to the car, so the police presumed that it had been left unlocked.
Of course being robbed anywhere under any circumstances is a traumatic experience. We do have security inside the hotel premises, but not on the street. We would like to warn all guests in the future, both of the hotel and the restaurant, to please make sure you lock your vehicles and do not leave anything of value visible through the windows. Prevention of theft is the best way!

My husband and I stayed at the Mezzanine for our honeymoon last July. We had the most fantastic stay - the hotel is IN a nature reserve and therefore has to be environmentaly friendly which is important to us. We stayed in one of the suites and can say that they were exactly like in the pictures on their website.
The hotel was super romantic, with no kids (which is what you want when you're on honeymoon) and literally ON THE BEACH. The plunge pool is more than sufficient and a welcome break from the relentless mexican sun. We spent most of our time, by the pool side sipping marguerittas.
The party on Friday was very good - they do warn you on their website that it is very loud, but we loved it.
The food was very good, although if you are there for more than a few days it does become a bit tiresome...
Breakfast was fantastic - specially the banana pancakes :-) and the smoothies/juices really delicious.
We are both vegetarians and can say that the restaurant catered well for us.
They had a good selection of DVDs you can have on loan too.
Finally - the staff were wonderfully friendly and polite, helpful and welcoming. The room was always impecably clean no matter how late we got out of bed.
I do have to say, that some of the review I have read on trip advisor, sound as though they were written by people staying at other places, particularly the one that says the hotel does not have a beach! As for the one that moans about the music - I would say that they clearly didn't got to the Mezzanine's website, or read trip advisor or read any of the posters on reception...

This was a superior 'boutique' hotel on a beautiful stretch of beach. The food was just excellent, and the staff couldn't do enough for you. You could go to sleep listening to the ocean, and wake up to the sunrise. The hotel manager made sure we did and saw everything on our list, provided driving directions, snorkeling equipment, and made reservations for us in advance. We would go back, but not Friday night.
Don't stay on Friday night. They advertise a party, which we were looking forward to. What happpened was over 4 hours of computer-generated 'Techno' music, and was attended by about 80 - 100 young adults from other hotels in the area. And boy was it loud! Then at 1:30, they turned it up!! Don't let the pictures on the website fool you. This party did not reflect the clientele staying on the property.

We stayed at Mezzanine for 5 days as part of our honeymoon trip to Tulum. It was completely different than other places we have stayed. It was very hip and boutique style which was fun. The decor is very nicely done and you feel like you are really living the high life when you stay there. We really enjoyed our stay there and had a wondeful time but do think it was a bit overpriced compared to other places.

Rooms: Gorgeous and quiet. We stayed in room 4 and room 1 and honestly, both were fine. The breeze off the ocean was perfect and we never heard too much noise. We reccomend room 4 because it is at the end and is the most private.

Staff: The staff was wonderful and friendly. The rooms were immaculate and we could always find someone if we needed to.

Food: AMAZING! We loved the food so much that we had the same thing for breakfast everyday. You MUST get the huevos rancheros and the smoothies. The Thai food was also a nice addition. The drink were also amazing and they offerred a margarita happy hour that we took advantage of each day.

Beach: We LOVED the beach here. you just walked down the stairs and about 500 feet to the left and found a grogeous clean beach. The water was so clear you could see the bottom of the ocean and the waves were just the right size. The locals seemed to know this was a good beach too because a lot were there on the weekend. You can also walk a bit towards Hotel Paraiso for food, drinks, beach, etc. ( a large more family oriented resort).

Ruins: Its a long walk to the ruins but we did it just fine. You can't walk on the beach all the way so make sure you wear shoes to walk on the road. Its worth the trip.

All in all it was great and we highly reccomend it but we would not have wanted to stay there the whole time since it is so far away from the other end of the "hotel zone".

My wife and I agree that Mezzanine was our best trip to date. Mezzanine is a small hotel with about nine rooms. Four ocean view, three lower level, and two suites. The hotel is very well maintained and they are constantly upgrading the facility. The staff at Mezzanine are a big part of the trip experience. From talking to the staff and management many of the staff have worked at Mezzanine for a very long time. They keep the hotel and grounds spotless clean, and are extremely friendly. We new many of them by name after only the second day. We had a great time visiting with the other guests who were from all around the world. The food at Mezzaning was a terrific mix of authentic thai and mexican dishes. Many of the thai dishes took us back to our trip in Thailand a couple years ago. Each afternoon the bar has two for one margaritas, and you can enjoy them on their ample deck space or on the beautiful beach. Mezzanine is located in a perfect location only a couple km walk to the ruins or a short bike ride to town (about 4km). The beach has wonderful powdery sand that never gets hot on the feet. The water was great with waves just the perfect size for a boogie boarder in training (first time ever). Vanessa our concierge reccomended a snorkel trip at Akumal. The reef was just off the beach there and the waves were virtualy non exsistent. We saw sea turtles, squid and a myriad of fish. Then there was the Friday night party. It was an incredible scene with fire dancers and stilt walkers entertaining and international dj's spinning the tunes. We had dj Lee Garrett for our trip, he played a great mix of music and we had a great time getting to know him. I think Mezzanine was a great find and we will be returning in the future.

The ultimate romantic getaway, Mezzanine is beautifully situated on the the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Steps lead to a postcard style beach, and their restaurant has the same fantastic view.

Our rooms were spacious, thoughfully laid out, well appointed, and the beds were extremely comfortable. We stayed in both the Oceanview and the Master Suites, and both were fabulous. The Oceanview have a great loft area, which was ideal for doing yoga, reading and having some alone time while still sharing space in the room. Ample shelves for clothes, safe in the room, well laid out & appointed bathroom with a nice shower stall. Our rooms were well cleaned daily, and a thoughtful jug of drinkable ice water was left for us each day as well. They are within a short bike ride (you can borrow bikes) to the ruins, and have lots of shady parking for visitors.

We ate in the restaurant quite a bit - both for convenience, and because it was so unbelievably good. Make sure you try their lattes, their pancakes, and as much of their Thai food as possible. Everything that we tried was absolutely delicious, and the service was outstanding.

Our last night there we stayed in the Master Suite, and it was phenomenal. Beautifully designed, cute additions like a copy of the Cosmo-Sutra book, with DVDs to borrow downstairs for the television. We had a bottle of Prosseco sent up to our room on ice, and enjoyed it on our spacious private deck before heading down for yet another phenomenal dinner. A bonus that had nothing to do with the hotel was the proposal from my boyfriend that went along with that chilly bottle of heaven. Fellas - let me tell you, it's hard to get more romantic than the master suite for a proposal! After dinner we had brandies, sparkling water and brownies with ice cream sent up to our suite.

If expense is a concern, they have ground floor rooms available for very reasonable rates, especially in the off season. If you're staying for long periods of time, CALL THEM - they can move you from room to room if they don't have just one available for the entire time. Vanessa, our concierge, was extremely helpful.

The beach is GORGEOUS. We borrowed boogie boards and body surfed the waves, and they provide beach towels and a beach bag with water for you to take down with you. You can come up for a casual snack, get drinks to go down on the beach, or chill by their dipping pool on their beach beds & comfy padded chairs if you're not so much of a sand person.

Overall, this was our favourite hotel in Tulum.
