Retiro Maya Villas
Ranked #87 of 98 Hotels in Tulum
Reviewed March 28, 2012

I've stayed at Retiro 2 times in the past 10 months, most recently in February for 5 nights.

This place has some funk and soul and charm that is quite endearing and unique, and also not without some inconveniences.

If you are a self sufficient person who doesn't need to be pampered; have sunshine blown up yer jacksie, or be constantly connected to your electronic devices, you'll be just fine.

The rooms are cheerful but slightly faded; sometimes there is hot water, sometimes not; the section of the beach is stunning on an hourly basis and in a preferable location on a stretch of magical coastline. Electricity isn't always there but it's no big thing unless you make it a big thing (they DO need to work out their generator issues - have to have solid infrastructure)

Services are there but not every moment of the day or night. The staff are friendly, pleasant, and helpful in a genuine way...but not there all the time to wait on you hand and foot. Food is there and available but not their strong suite - there are plenty of options within walking distance.

(they do need to find or re-acquire certain personnel that are catalysts, who bring staff together to create a special team)

You are there to disconnect from many of things you may feel are important in modern life; you are there to reconnect with nature and aspects of yourself that perhaps you had forgotten about. If you embrace the opportunity and open to celebrating where you are and every moment, you'll find these moments turn into so much more.

You may find a crab or a waterbug in your room. It's not a big thing ok? You are on a paradisiacal beach in a beautiful part of the world!

Rent a bike...ride that coastal road; ride into Sian Ka'an; ride into the peublo and to the ruins. You'll love it.

And yes, do bring some biodegradeable suntan lotion as well as mosquito repellent. Sometimes there are no bugs; sometimes there are many: you are on a beach next to a jungle. What are you expecting?

If you are looking for a resort, this isn't it. If you are looking for a special experience, and are willing to create it...you will have the opportunity to do so here.

We had 5 magical nights in a Beachfront Cabana (8 I think) at the Retiro Maya at the beginning of March. Anyone reading this review will like us be concerned about the negative reviews that are mixed in with the strongly positive ones, but it all comes down to a choice: if you want an immaculate chain hotel, don't come here. The whole point of Tulum places like this is that they are not like that. We loved it. It's quirky, and, yes, you do see the odd cockroach, but the setting is absolutely stunning, the beach is gorgeous, you can walk up and down the beach and eat or have a cocktail very easily, and the Retiro's own restaurant is good. The water for showering was warmish, but fine given the lovely air temperature. The lack of air conditioning was no problem, and we only used the ceiling fan from time to time. The wifi was surprisingly good and we had good signal in our cabana, but like anywhere around the Caribbean, you shouldn't come to Tulum if you need absolutely dependable internet for business. My wife is fastidious about cleanliness and we had no problems with the towels or bedding. We loved the fact that the back wall of the shower room only came up to chest height, above that being completely open. The balcony overlooking the beach and sea was a lovely place to chill out (no light though so bring a head torch). There are no electrics at all in the room (except the main room and shower room ceiling lights/fan), but charging was easily done in the restaurant/bar area. The electricity was on most of the time, except during yoga classes (8-9am some mornings), powered by either the wind turbine or the generator. Breakfast was basic (toast, orange juice and coffee/tea) but perfectly adequate, with an option for eggs for a small extra charge. Tania and Enrique, who run the property, were absolutely lovely and very friendly. Cheapest way to get to/from Cancun airport was on the public bus which runs direct 4 or 5 times/day and more frequently if you change at Playa del Carmen. We had travelled up from Mexico City on the excellent Viva Aerobus and used their excellent value ground transportation which took us direct to the hotel. We rented bikes for a day, visited the Mayan ruins, had lunch in Tulum town one day which was fun, visited Gran Cenote for snorkelling and I did a memorable scuba dive at Cenote dos Ojes, and did a trip round the nature reserve in a boat. Zamas and las Estrellas were both good places to eat.

Retiro Maya is awesome, the people are respectful, genuine and kind. The rooms are comfortable and really natural. If you want to be in touch with nature, this is it!!!

Sewage backed up through our shower. There were cockroaches.
The location and the view is amazing but the rooms/shower/toilet situation was disgusting. We told the front desk and asked for money back but did not receive anything back or even a response to the request. We stayed there over Christmas/New Year's Eve. They were charging $300/night fully paid in advance.
We are pretty laid back and can handle rustic but sewage coming up through the shower is too much. Tulum is amazing, definitely go to Tulum and stay anywhere else on the beach, but not here.

This beach cabana set us back a hefty $143 US for a night, and in all fairness we were given a refund of most of this the following day. The room was equipped with 2 fans, which were attached to the ceiling and which had to be manually switched on every 4 hour during the night when electricity is available. The bedding frankly looked like it had never been washed, and the mozzie nets were full of holes (and mozzies). The cockroaches got a better nights sleep than us ( and there were a good few of them running around).
We traveled with our 1 year old and our 5 year old and none of us slept very much as it was hot and we were eaten alive- If you really want to book here, go for a sea view cabana as the breeze may help with the mozzies- ours was a garden view and it meant no breeze, and many bites- so much so that we had to take my 5 year old to hospital the next day following the advice of the red cross Tulum, because she was bitten by something ( they thought it might have been an ant) during the night that caused a serious allergic reaction.
We travel a lot, I have been in 86 different countries over the past 14 years, and I can safely say this is the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune of staying in- There was a similar place years ago in Thailand but the big difference was the price tag- A hammock on the beach would have been better....
If you want to punish someone, this might be a good place to take them and leave them, otherwise....To make it even worse, we moved to Akumal the following night where we spent $200 but got a 3 bedroom apartment with 3 bathrooms, jacuzzi, aircon throughout, beach views, balcony, kitchen sitting room, pool and a million other things, that really put this place to shame

Room Tip: Seriously, dont even think of it- go up to Akumal or sleep in the car/on the beach- we saw some othe...

The good: Great location in a beautiful beach. The hotel is ok, nice big beds.

The not so good: We only had electricity from 5pm to 11pm (they did tell us that was the hotel policy though). We didn't have any hot water during our stay. Continental breakfast, very simple, far from spectacular. We found it a little bit pricey but it's an expensive area, so this hotel was actually one of the cheapest we could find, not worth it to stay there for more than two nights.

Overall, not terrible, you'll enjoy your stay here as long as you're prepared for a rustic experience.

We got three cabanas, two with sea view and one sea front location. Nice facilities meeting all needs but do not expect like a first class hotel. Part of nature, and two steps from the wonderfull beach. Service very friendly. Basically a good deal.
