“A regenerative experience in a beautiful natural setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2011

We had a very enjoyable and restful stay in a very beautiful natural setting.
The staff is very kind and attentive including the owners Lu and made us feel completely welcome. The yoga instructor Siomara gave great and fun classes in Kundalini Yoga at very reasonable rates and took special care of us occasional practitioners

The cabanas are rustic but clean. They are however basic and somewhat open to the outside with a simple fan, requiring a mosquito net and repellent. In order to get the best benefit, I strongly recommend choosing a beachfront cabana for the breezes and morning view

Overall this is a reasonably priced option for the area on a great part of the beach, other places looked OK but some were on a more smelly stretch due to seaweed accumulation. If you're looking for the vapid and standardized international boutique feel this ain't it! They do have wi-fi but it feels good to disconnect.

Nearby (walking distance) are great restataurants El Tabano (great interesting food), Posada Margherita (pricey but huge portions)
Tulum town is reachable via a 50 pesos cab ride

Bring: suntan lotion, repellent, a flashlight, a good book and leave the hustle and bustle behind.

Room Tip: Get one of the beachfromt cabanas!

We spent 4 nights in the ocean front cabana with our 21 months old daughter in June. We walked quite a lot on the beach and this is one it's most beautiful stretches. The cabanas are charming however you have to bear in mind that cabanas ARE a very basic type of accommodation so you have to wait for a longer while for warm water which is kind of salty anyway (it's Eco-hotel so they recover rain water). And the sand is almost everywhere. For us it was a part of the charm of living on the beach though! Our cabana had a very comfy bed, funny bathroom and was quite spacious. The only thing is that there is not much storage so we ended up keeping part of our stuff in the suitcases. On the outside terrace there are great sun beds and a hammock which was great. Federico is of great help, makes great pina colada and if you want fantastic breakfast, ask for huevos a la mexicana or revueltos. It's also best guacamole in neighbourhood! The place is great for a toddler as well - clean beach, very safe.

Retiro Maya has the most beautiful, inviting beach environment and accommodations for an incredibly, peaceful getaway. Your hostess, Lu, is so gracious and welcoming- and is there to meet your every need. I have traveled extensively and have never enjoyed the beach and ocean more than during this stay. The food was delicious and healthy, the cabanas wonderfully rustic, clean and comfortable. I cannot wait to return to this location as I was treated with such kindness by every one of the staff. The surrounding area has such amazing, natural elements to explore. It was truly an adventure to cherish.

Room Tip: All cababas are wonderful

Retiro Maya is the perfect blend of pure relaxation, astounding beauty and amazing people! Special care is taken of each and every guest. There was love in the awesome food, love in the sweet unique cabanas, love in every detail. Waking up next to that stunning sea and then being treated with such genuine care made our stay magical. There were fantastic ruins nearby for adventure, fun village shops and beach bars for fun, and incredible massage for all! This is a very special place of transformation and rejuvenation and I will most definitely be back.

Room Tip: Choose close to the beach for that heavenly breeze

I just spent four nights at the Retiro Maya and it was truly magical! All of the staff were so friendly and nice. Breakfast is served from 8 am by Frederico, a jolly, happy man. There are usually one or two yoga classes per day. When we were there the 7:30am class was a kundalini class and the 9:30am was a restorative class taught be Edgar....another beautiful man....radiating with an incredible presence. He likes to do couples yoga classes which were different and enlightening. He, along with Julian offer massages which we, unfortunately, were not able to partake but I'm certain they would have been amazing.

The beach at the resort is soft, pink and beautiful. The location is awesome with Posado Margherita and Hemingways within walking distance. Both were great restaurants.

We had a car so we could explore some of the cenotes nearby. Definitely the Gran Cenote is a must!

Imagine sleeping with the gentle wind and the songs of the ocean under a full moon! Then, waking up with the delightful songs of birds and the smell of fresh coffee. Next take a shower with the window open to the outdoors. Begin your relaxing day with a walk through the soft white sand down to the beach and take a morning swim in the clean turquise ocean! Soon it's time for fabulous yoga with Edgar in a peaceful beautiful room. After yoga eat a delicious meal that is happily served to you as you look out onto the ocean. It could be time to lay in a hamock or drive 10 minutes to an ancient Myan ruin or get a wondrful massage from Julian. Retrio Maya is a delightful place to enjoy the blissful natural beauty of Tulum in an eco friendly environment around caring people.

Room Tip: Check the breeze in room for wonderful sleep.
