“Comfort, sparkle, and a goldmine of choice”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

This lovely small hotel (or Posada, as the owner and innkeeper lives on site) was a wonderful vacation home for two weeks. Lovely. The rooms are freshly painted and light, as the sun dances on the walls filtered by the well-cared for and flourishing plants, shrubs and trees in the courtyard. The small things such as hangars galore, working safes (not that they are needed), cold fridge (beer) and kitchen area (prepare guacamole) clean and useful. If you need anything (beer, avacados e.g.), small stores are a hop, skip and jump away. Peaceful, and an oasis after a day on the beach, biking or Mayan history exploring.

You start your day with the oft-mentioned breakfasts. Delicious, beautifully presented. Brenda's smile as she checks your order is like a cup of coffee it is so engaging. Ricardo's Hola from the kitchen as he wafts herbs and sausage smells your way gets your hunger going.

You end the day with a host of restaurants in walking distance. We loved the El Camillo down the block, fresh fish and glorious octopus and squid, washed down by cold beer in comfortable plastic chairs. You will not lack for choices, which brings us to Tom.

Tom is the owner manager who lives on site and makes it a true Posada. An early morning fixture who wanders around greeting guests with his shades giving us, at first, the vague impression of a Texas cop stopping to give you a ticket. But, underneath, as he slips off the glasses, is a charming guy who wants to give you a ticket - to all that Tulum and the area has to offer. He knows about it, and how to hook you up with the many variations of day-trips or evening events.

Tom turned us on to Antonio and Jessica, a couple who own and run Yucatan Outdoors. Rookie or advanced, Antonio's tours of the Reserva to the south, or unusual ceynotes in the area are remarkable. Antonio has passion, expertise, a safety lens, and grace and humour - all in one package! Worth every penny for his guiding and gear and experience. (Jessica runs the office, and gets up really early on kayak days to make a very delicious lunch - fresh, recipes from her Mom, and tasty.) The setting of eating these delicacies while bobbing in the Laguna watching rays and ibis is also extraordinary.

So it goes. The Posada is a hub for it all!

Room Tip: Ask for the back rooms away from the street which may be even quieter. Personally, we had no problem...

My wife and I recently stayed in the Posada Luna del Sur hotel for four nights in late February - best hotel we've stayed in for quite a while. Tom, the owner, provided a map of the Tulum region and told us what his favorite restaurants, bars, bike rental places, etc. His staff is exceptionally friendly and the breakfast was the best we had during our two weeks in Mexico. And it was included with the price of the room. The rooms were large, comfortable and super clean. Other resorts could take some lessons from Tom in ways to provide the customer a first rate service. We will be back. Thank you for a great stay.

This boutique hotel just off the main drag was a great place to base our 3-night stay in Tulum. The reasons: the well-designed, comfortable room, the great breakfast, the owner's recommendations on what to do.

The spacious room at the end of the hall (one floor up) was almost like a mini-apartment, with a kitchen area that includes cups, plates, flatware, and a water dispenser. (It was nice to not have to buy bottled water, since i hate disposable plastic.) There really isn't a way to cook a meal, but it would be great if you had leftovers or wanted to do a little mini-mart snack and beverage shopping.

Beds were comfortable, bathrooms pleasing and clean, and we used the little balcony for drying stuff when we went swimming and diving. I'd describe the decor as local, modern yet classic -- with some personal touches that are very cute like the towels folded as animals with little sticker eyes. (I wish i took a photo.)

We took advantage of the morning breakfast with good coffee, and a selection of Mexican or continental breakfast options. There's a breakfast special each morning -- my favorite was the chicken mole in tortilla (can't remember the original name of the dish). I felt fairly decadent eating mole for breakfast, but hey, i was on vacation.

In fact thanks to the owner, Tom, there was no shortage of fabulous eating and drinking opportunities. His recommendations were my favorite part of the stay.

He greets guests at breakfast. He gave us a map with his picks of bars and restaurants. He also hooked us up with a great dive shop to go cenote diving and snorkeling. And he pointed me in the right direction for shopping to get some more artisan-style jewelry and gifts.

Room Tip: Our corner room was big and away from the stairs so very quiet.

There are many positives for this lovely little hotel. The owner Tom is exceptionally helpful and always willing to assist with trips, recommend restaurants, beaches etc.

The rooms are great being spacious with the added benefit of a sink, basic crockery and cutlery, fridge, coffee maker and ingredients and a large purified water dispenser (replaced as required). The bed is large and comfortable and the balcony is big enough for two to sit out in the sun. The fan in our room was quiet and efficient and WIFI signal good (Room 8). The bathroom is functional and the sink in the bedroom which appears to be the norm in Mexico

The breakfasts served on the roof terrace are a real treat even if they are not good for the waistline!

If you are staying in Tullum then the location is great being towards the south end of town and a short walk from everything. There was no noticeable road or other noise (other than music on one isolated night – Tom apologised but it was hardily his fault!)

We went to the beach 4 days and used the beach club recommended by Tom. In reality this was a small beach front hotel with about 6 or 7 sets of beds/umbrellas and a restaurant/bar. The trip by taxi takes just a few minutes and costs 60 pesos each way (just over £3 or $5). As there is little to do or see at the beach in terms of shops, banks, restaurants, bars, transport links then I recommend staying in town and going to the beach by car/taxi or bike as required. There are certainly less mosquito’s in town which I am told is an issue in the warmer wetter months

Overall taking into account the service, room, price and location this is one of the best places we have ever stayed and it is highly recommended

Clean, comfortable, and spacious room - it was a very nice stay! We had a cool little balcony where we could drink our coffee in the morning. This place has some superb and artsy towel-folding: I had never seen a towel folded into the shape of an elephant before. We missed breakfast both days but I am sure it was good.

We stayed for 4 nights at Posada Luna del Sur and could not have been happier with our decision. The hotel is clean (top on my priority list), charming, and in a great location for getting to know Tulum pueblo and the surrounding area. The simple rooms are perfectly appointed and to our surprise had A/C which is a rarity in Tulum ( turns out we didn't need the A/C because it was 55 degrees the first few nights!). It's very funny to walk the streets of Mexico and see women and children with hats gloves scarves and flip flops on their feet!

Tom is a fantastic host who is readily available to offer advice on dining, sightseeing, beach options and whatever else you might need. It's like having a personal concierge!! While we did a ton of research in advance regarding things to do, eat, etc... We simply could have saved the time and followed all of Tom's great suggestions as they were better and more thorough. The complimentary breakfast on the beautiful roof deck was delicious and Brenda was the sweetest server ( don't forget to leave her some pesos!).

I would definitely recommend renting a car either in cancun upon arrival or once you get to Tulum as there is so much to see and do around. We split the trip between the pueblo and the beach and enjoyed both parts equally. The southern Tulum beach strip is really beautiful and should not be missed.

Room Tip: All rooms are pretty much equal. We ended up on the first floor and were initially worried but turns...

Recently returned from 2 nights in Cancun, 1 in Chichen Itza and 3 in Tulum. Would highly recommend Posada Luna del Sur in Tulum Pueblo. The owner, Tom, lives onsite and is always ready to lend a hand with beach supplies, umbrellas, coolers, tour advice, restaurant advice, etc. Breakfast was delicious (and complimentary) every morning and featured a different local specialty each day, along with the regular menu which had plenty of variety, from omelets to fruit plates. (We always made it a point to be on time for the chef's breakfast.) The service was great and Tom helped cook and serve meals.

Very good and attentive cleaning and bed service in our rooms as well. Quiet and well air conditioned, and parking onsite. Appreciated the local flavor in Tulum Pueblo and could still drive to the beach in a few minutes. Less touristy and more authentic, and half the price (or less) of a beach club. Two thumbs up!

Room Tip: Stayed in the back, not overlooking the street. Very quiet.
