Posada Luna del Sur was a great place to stay in the town of Tulum. It is located a half block from the main street where you will find wonderful restaurants. And don't worry about which restaurant is good as Tom, the owner, provides you with a map which highlights his favorite restaurants. Tom also provides you with great tips on what to do and the best times to do it. He suggested a little beach for great snorkelling, I felt like I was in a salt water aquarium! Thanks for helping us have a great holiday!

I do not know how to review this hotel. We hated it when we arrived but learned to love it.The hotel is set near the edge of town close to the busy highway and miles from the beach. We nearly got back on the plane after seeing where we were. The security guard showed us to our room as there is no reception. Our room was clean and overlooked the street and has a tiny balcony. There is a small kitchen area, bathroom and comfortable bedroom. Gloom set in.The much vaunted breakfast proved to be a disaster and we are now ready to pack our bags and leave. This is when we met Tom who holds court at breakfast every morning. He told us all the best places to eat, visit etc. and Tulum and the hotel began to grow on us. There are some great restaurants and plenty to do from here. Breakfast continued to decline but I would visit here again and would recommend it.

The reviews and awards Posada Luna del Sur have gotten are WELL deserved! Tom's attention to detail is what makes this place stand out as a highlight on our recent trip to Mexico. Don't worry about restaurants, beach clubs, shopping, or day tours, laundry etc etc etc...Tom has all the information that you need to make this a once in a lifetime experience.

Make sure you ask about the day excursions Tom can help arrange with Antonio....we have done dozens of these day trips over the past 13 years and NONE can even come close to what we experienced in the Cenotes and reef snorkeling trip hosted by Antonio....

Excellent breakfast (Brenda is a beautiful person), clean establishment, safe area, off the main strip but still walking distance to restaurants and shopping and a 50-70 pesos ride to the beach!

Thanks again Tom, it was an experience rather than a trip!

From the minute we got there, Tom and his staff could not do enough to enhance our holiday. We stayed a week and everything was perfect. From the room, to the breakfast, to the rooftop terrace, to the staff and even the weather.
Thanks to Tom and Posada Luna del Sur for the amazing holiday!!

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor and the end of the walkway which was very quiet.

I'm a sceptic, and when researching hotels before my Tulum trip, I couldn't get over the fact that there was an inordinate number of 5-star reviewers who have written just one review. I figured people were really moved by this place to join TripAdvisor and leave that one review!
On the other hand, there were enough people who did NOT fit that category, so it seemed worth a shot.
After a quick email to Tom, followed by a quick PayPal transaction, we had confirmation that though a specific room request may not be fulfilled because of high demand, he would be able to get us on the second floor (as recommended by other TripAdvisors)
We got to Posada Luna Del Sur just before 3pm. Tom was not around, and one of his staff members showed us to our room (#5) on the first floor (ground floor, for some of you readers!).
We were a little disappointed but given that we had been up since 5am EST (4am, local time, actually!), we unpacked and settled in.
So, here's the good and bad about the place:
1. The rooms are impeccably clean... and we soon got used to the garden in the back rather the balcony we were expecting!
2. There's ample bottled water in the room (we got a quick replenishment when we told Tom we were running low)
3. There also is a fridge, coffee maker and basic utensils in case you want to buy your own supplies make your own meals.
4. The breakfast is to die for. Between the daily special and the regular offerings, we never left the breakfast table wanting more!
5. There are ample dining and drinking options for all price ranges within walking distance of this place.
There seemed to be some kind of fair on the Saturday we were there, and it felt great mingling with the locals.
6. The hotel is located about 5-8 kilometers (depending on where you want to be) from the beaches. If being on the beach at all times and sleeping and waking up to the sounds of the ocean is important to you, living in Tulum Pueblo is probably not a wise choice.
7. You have access to a computer if you need to check things at the last minute, or just need to check in for your return flight.
8. My smartphone (a month old Samsung Galaxy SIII) could not detect a strong enough wireless signal... even on the breakfast balcony. Thank goodness for the computer access Tom provides!
9. The TV in our room got a lot of noise. The bilingual weather channel was the only one that worked fine. It's not that we flew all the way down there to watch TV, but at the end of a long day of activities, watching some American Football in Spanish didn't seem like a bad idea if we could!
10. The air conditioner was noisy. We had to turn it off in the middle of the night because every time it kicked in it would wake us up!
11. The reviews about the water heater are partly correct. Being raised in a third world country, I knew how to work with limited capacity water heaters...and we did here too. I can see how having that endless supply of hot water in developed countries could make it difficult to have to work around the capacity of a heater than the other way around!
12. I got sick on the last day. As did at least two more TripAdvisors who seemed to be there around the same time. Maybe we all at at Don Cafeto's that night! Coincidence?
13. Tom is very knowledgable about the area. His pick, Antonio, for tour guide was really great, knowledgable and courteous!
All in all, there is something about this place that felt home... after a long day out it felt like a quiet little oasis in the chaotic charm that is Tulum Pueblo.
If I had a chance, I would stay here again... probably not in Room #5 though!

What a pleasant experience it was, staying in Posada Luna del Sur for 3 days.
The location is not at the beach, neither in a wonderful picturesque street, in a wonderful picturesque little village. It is in a side street of Tulum Centre, which actually is just a village somewhere on the 307 Mexican highway.
But, like good restaurants, good hotels do not care where they're located... sort of.
People will come anyway.
And the location is not bad at all, if you give it a closer look. The town has its own charm.
You pay more than double the price for the same room standard 3k's down the road, at the beach
a great beach strip by the way. Easy access to the beach by renting a cheap bicycle (the first and only bicycle strip I saw in Mexico was in Tulum). Or take a $4 cab.
And from Tulum there is a wide range of temples, snorkeling areas, cenotes, Jungle/kayak areas all within reach.
Tulum is, in fact the ideal Hub-town to start a varied holiday for the "non-resort tourist" who wants to explore the Yucatan!
Tom, the owner of the hotel, just gives you a feeling you are in his own house, and that you are very welcome guest.
Attention for detail in the room in every aspect, the whole staff must be carefully picked as well, as they seem to do their job with a certain kind of pride you only see in businesses run by an inspired owner. Breakfast is an a la carte menu you can choose from whatever you like, and it is good.
Every simple question you have for Tom almost immediately results in a mandatory consultation at the desk of his own home.
It really is a very special place. Hotel Schools from around the world might be able to skip half their classes if they send students to this hotel for an internship for a few months.
Do it with all your heart, or do not do it at all, that is the whole thing about running a small to medium sized hotel.
My job is kind of the same, but I learned a lot from staying only 3 days in Hotel Luna del Sur.
Keep up the good work, I will be back...!
Willem
