“Ok but No Sleep”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2006

This hostel is an interesting place to stay but it is impossible to get any sleep. The rooms are extremely hot and the bunks are very loud and creek if anyone moves the whole room will wake up.

The rooms consist of 3 double bunks (6 beds) with a shower and toilet for each room.

The place features free breakfast in the morning (coffee, eggs, cereal, or pancakes) which you have to make yourself. They have 2 computers for Internet usage. They sell beer.

You will meet a lot of travelers at this hostel but do not expect to sleep well.

Stayed in this hostel for about 3 days in the month of October. Since I was traveling solo and the weather was more on the cloudy/rainy then sunny side, I decided to stay at the hostel to meet other travelors.

Place was rustic, but the guests and people running the establishment were very warm and friendly.

Rooms were cleaned daily and beds were made daily with clean bed linen. Ceiling fans. . no a/c. The price included a self-serve morning breakfast. Not only was it self-serve but also one had to cook/prepare their own breakfast. (not complaining)

Breakfast included coffee, cereal (milk not provided), eggs and an assortment of fruit. (Bees would join us everymorning attracted by the honey and jam. So if you are petrified of bees you might want to skip breakfast. )

Dinner cost about $3 - $8 usd, which could be a hamburger, steak or tuna. Again, cook your own food as you like. All utensils provided. Enjoyed the evening dinner because the guests seemed to be more lively, and friendly and became more intimate. Evening dinners could become a bit rowdy (everyone sharing their day's adventures) but the staff was pretty good at moving the guests away from the dorms around 11pm. . so those who wanted to get some sleep could get peace and quiet.

There's also a "television room". . pretty much like a large living room with sofa's, chairs, couches, pillows etc for one to get comfortable. Television had satellite so all kinds of programs available for viewing.

All in all the place was very enjoyable and worth my stay and money. Would definitely return again. . .

Whilst you can in no way call this luxury accomodation it is the best place we stayed in on our 6 month trip round the world. If you're travelling alone you will deinfiley meet people and the communal area and long tables encourage mixing and chatting with others. the beds are funny (some how made out of scaffolding) the breakfast is good (pancakes or eggs) and the free lift to quite possibly 'the most beautiful beach in the world' is definitely a plus point. The bus is also quite funny because the door comes right off. Very conveneient for the bus station, the local green grocers and bakers are nice and cheap and the french restaurant in the town is superb. I would have to agree with the other rater, people like me who stay up all night and dance around on tables in the rain may stop you from sleeping, but just don't be so boring and join in, you'll have a blast!

If you are looking to party all night, then this is the place for you. If you actually intend to sleep, DO NOT STAY HERE! It's like trying to sleep in a bar. The rooms (with no actual windows or doors) face right out to a central courtyard with a bar where there was music and drunk people partying until three in the morning. Not fun when you have a tour planned for 8 AM...

Ideally located opposite the bus station the Weary Traveller was a great place to stay and to meet people. The guys who run the place are friendly and fluent English Speakers who offer lots of helpful advice on getting around in the local area. The doom room i stayed in was pretty basic but had an ensuite, what more could you ask for. There's also a nice leafy outside area, films also shown everynight and food is offered. I would highly recommend it!

The Weary Traveler hostel was just a fun place to stay... I met people from all over the world. The staff kept things happy and light. They had a barbeque on Sunday night that was fantastic! Live music and fire dancing
I would with out a doupt stay here again- and not just because it is the cheapest place in town

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Weary Traveler Hostel Tulum was started by backpackers for backpackers back in the year 2000. The hostel was built around what they themselves wanted to find in a good hostel when they were traveling. A good social vibe A book exchange A bar with backpacker prices Communal Kitchen (loaded with free spices, salt, pepper) Full Cook Your Own Breakfast Free Rice, Pasta and lentils for dinner Good Advice on Tours and Activities Some aspects of the Weary Traveler Hostel Tulum appear to be unique but they are not. Many of them came from other hostels where we had stayed long before we dreamed of opening a hostel in Tulum. For example the Burn Your Own BBQ was inspired by the Bondi Beach Hotel's incredible steak barbi setup inside the bar. Huge, beautiful cuts of beef were in a display fridge that was part of the bar. You would say, "Yeah, give me that one!" and huge chunk of raw red meat came at you on a platter. It was your job to cook it how you wanted it. The Weary Traveler Hostel Tulum has changed, evolved, gone back to our roots and changed again and again over the years. We have always tried to evolve as a hostel, stay ahead of the competition and anticipated the changing needs and desires of our guests. So welcome to The Weary Traveler Hostel Tulum, mi casa es su casa! John, one of the originals from way back when. ... more   less
