“do not stay here”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

This was one of the worst hotel experiences I have had and I've had some bad ones. Their strategy is to put you in a room adjacent (5 feet) from a very busy and loud road, opposite a loud bar and when you ask to be moved, they want to charge you another $250.00 US on top of the already over priced $150.00.

The bed was like a slab of concrete, no hot water and not enough room on the toilet to sit without hitting your knees on the wall.

A horrible experience over all

Room Tip: go somewhere else

Make sure to read the review entitled "unfortunate pick" and be sure to read the part about "bad exchange rate" - you must pay in dollars (if you don't come equipped with wads of dollars - use the middle and left ATMs at the HSBC bank in town). You'll pay a worse rate in pesos or a dramatically far worse rate with a credit card. We lucked into room 3, which is very pleasant with an ocean view balcony.
Our first impression was pretty rotten; the owner was offensive disparaging my Spanish, and acting as if we were idiots for not immediately grasping all the wild disparaity in price based upon payment methods. The maid has been a delight, making us laugh every day with animal-towel creations. If not for the maid, we found the place quite soul-less, but we liked the area a lot. (PS See Zamas reviews - we spent a lot of our time and food and drink budget there...)

Room Tip: 3 is a good room.

I have stayed at what was Luna Maya 4 times. If you know that the roadside rooms are quite loud and get say #4 it is an ok location for a short time. On business I like it for it's proximity to some good food and town, the shared beach w /Escondidas is excellent for lounging but has hidden rocks and when windy the water can fill with seaweed. The deck high on the rocks is private and a great sunbathing & reading spot. This year I tried repeatedly to make a reservation but they had changed names and ownership. WHO KNEW? I stopped in while down to comment and the manager thought it was ridiculous that I couldn't find them online & since they never responded we didn't get a reserv. and stayed up the street. No email forwarding??? I have their card right now and cannot find the new tulumbay.com online, only booking services.

The Hotel is located in the first section of hotels when you turn onto the beach road in Tulum, which is much noisier and busier than other hotel options further south on the Tulum road. Our rooms windows faced the car park and the street, therefore despite being a beachside hotel we had to draw the curtains the whole time we were in the room so people walking past couldn't see in! The prices were quite high, and the exchange rate wasn't great if you paid in Mexican Pesos, I would advise having dollars if you stay here the rate will work out better for you. The hotel beach is nice, a small cove shared with the neighboring hotel, there weren't many people staying while we were there, but there were just enough beach chairs and sand space for everyone... if the hotel was full I think it could get very crowded.
The customer service wasn't the best, when you're confronted with US prices I think I always expect US standard customer service, this wasn't the case at Tulum Bay. There was a throng of small problems which mostly got resolved (our check in was delayed for 3 hours, there was only one chair outside our room when all the other rooms had 2 and a table, our shower had terrible pressure and needed fixing etc), and then at the end of our stay the hotel manager was haggling with me over a few dollars his colleague had mis-calculated in the exchange rate and wanted me to pay more money after I'd paid the bill. It didn't leave me with a good parting experience, but confirmed my initial feeling that there were likely much better options in this highly competitive resort.

Room Tip: Don't take the room with 2 beds that faces the car park, I think the cabins are a safe bet.
