“Too many kids and babies”
Reviewed March 4, 2011

La Zebra is a beautiful property in a perfect location. Cabanas are great. But there are too many kids. On the first two nights we were there, there were 7 kids on property under the age of 4. As a couple travelling for romance and quiet so many kids whining and crying made being on the beach not peaceful and meals annoying. Not too mention the crying babies during the night. I wish La Zebra was less kid friendly.

Next time try our sister hotel , Mezzanine, they do not accept kids in the hotel and have a great beach, a romantic atmosphere , happy hour in margaitas, and a delicious thai cuisine.

When I was doing research on Tulum I just could not get my head around the amount of hotels, but yet people described it as laid back and fairly quiet. After having been there I can see why it is so popular, and all of the above is true. The 'beach section' of hotels is rather spread out on a quiet/narrow road, some of the hotels tend to be clumped together whilst some are farther apart. La Zebra seemed to be in the section that is spread out. The beach directly in front of the restaurant and bar is wonderful, white sand. They provided an number of sun beds and mattresses to lounge on as well as hammocks. The food at the restaurant is amazing - lots of organic, local, sustainable food - however the prices reflect that. The beach side rooms start right on the beach but go back towards the road. We stayed in cabana #4 which is the 4th furthest from the beach, and was supposed to be Partial Ocean View...but it wasn't really unless you stood 4 feet outside the cabana. Cabana 3 does had a view of the ocean (as do #1 and #2) Inside it was lovely; simple, clean. We took our 15 month old with us so we reserved a crib, and they gave us a Pack n' Play for her to sleep in which was perfect. We would put her to bed and then eat in the restaurant which was about 50 feet away. Overall the resort did not cater well for children - no children's meals offered, but our daughter ate what we ate.
I did not get to see the jungle side cabanas so cannot comment on those. I am glad we did not stay in the 'beach side' cabanas that were closer to the road, as that would have been noisy. I would highly recommend this place and would go back but might not take my daughter with me.

On the Sunday night they have a salsa party which is fun... but its really loud so tough to get to sleep if you are not taking part in it.

We try to make it easy for the parents who stay with us by helping them with whatever special needs they have for their kids. When asked, we make special baby food, clean baby bottles, get something from town for them ...such as medicine or dipers. We provide baby seats at the restaurant and there is a play area on the beach for kids as well.We even offer baby sitting services. However, we love to have you again, with or with out your little one.

Picture this! 9 artsy chic beach cabanas set discretly under palm trees, steps away to the white powdery beach, your lounge chairs or hammocks. The restaurant, casual and beautifully locally furnished, offers fresh organic foods and drinks and the staff serves all day with smile and a sense of humor. Thank you to Santiago and Manuel. We spent a week there with our 5 years old, and of course she favors the cluster of newer 5 jungle cabanas (across the street) with its small pool. Both options are worth trying for different reasons. Kids are welcome, and it is safe to have them run around and play with nature, while parents are enjoying some peace. And finally, Lina and Miriam are wonderful hosts who will arrange a massage session for you with Rita - She is the best - or a babysitter, anything really. There's no doubt that La Zebra has the most magical and romantic setting available and this is a rare find. We will return definitively! Photos attached

My wife and I went straight there the day after our wedding and as soon as we arrived we knew we had made the right decision. Best things about the place: the location on the beach is just stunning; the beach bar and restaurant serves amazing food and drinks, the cocktails especially were amazing made with fresh fruit juices and fresh raw sugar crushed from cane behind the bar. They were so good we were practically having them with breakfast by the end of the holiday. Other great things: our room - but then we did stay in the luxury beach shack with its 2 floors and rooftop tub; salsa nights; friendly and helpful staff; the orange juice and coffee basket that is waiting outside your door in the morning! Basically everything was great, we even considered going back there again this year to celebrate our anniversary but it is just too far from London. If there is any word of caution I can give then it would be to say that I don't know about any of the other rooms except the one we stayed in, and that one of the suites is attached to the main bar area so if you want privacy and quiet, make sure not to stay there. Also, and this is nothing against La Zebra, but don't eat there every night, there are some other great restaurants down the beach including Posada Margherita which is an amazing Italian restaurant by any standards.

We came here on a Sunday night to have dinner and watch the salsa dancing. The live music was fantastic, and between that and the great drinks we were distracted from the wait for our table. We had the lime soup to start, and I had to keep myself from licking the bowl. For dinner I had steak fajitas with mixed peppers which were cooked perfectly. The hand made tortillas were delicious. We tried the side of corn, which was also amazing with mayo, cheese, and seasonings. The pina colada was fantastic as well. The atmosphere here is very relaxed and fun, the kind of place you can dress up or dress down and still feel appropriate. Really wanted to try the banana flambe for dessert but could not possibly fit another thing in my stomach! Definitely go here!

We are still having our salsa night every sunday and are glad that you enjoyed our mexican kitchen . we feel our salsa night is a fun way of sharing part of our latin culture with the world wide visitors and is also a nice way for them to way to interact with the locals of Tulum and dance to the rythm of our local band. We hope you are able to visit us some other time and try out our new menu specials, thanks for your nice comments.

My husband and 2 yr old stayed at Zebra and I just wanted to share with other parents that I thought Zebra was the best spot in tulum for a family with young children. it is not exclusively "family", and there were only one or two other families with children there of the 2 dozen or so guests. And they don't cater specifically to families, (with kids meals or playgrounds or anything.) What makes it so attractive is that it had none of little things that drive parents of toddlers crazy: steep stairs, balconies, pools, tight spaces, expensive vases teetering at edges of sharp coffee tables etc. The resort is U-shaped, right on the sand, open to the sea, so it's like a giant playground in itself. I just felt I could relax and not have to hover over my daughter constantly.
In the restaurant, there were even tables in on the sand, so you could eat dinner while your little one played by your feet.
The staff was friendly and accommodating, and provided a crib for us with a mosquito net.
While I was there, I checked out ana y jose, Amansala, Shambala and several others and definitely felt glad we went to Zebra.
-Fun things we did: Drive to Cesiak and have lunch overlooking the beach
-Checked out the animals at the Gran Cenote
-Went to a playground in the city of Tulum
-Danced with our daughter at Zebra's salsa night
-brought a stroller and went for a walk along the road early in the morning (it's too busy after 9am).
-rented a car at the cancun airport and just had the freedom to drive into town and go to the supermarket for yogurts, mosquito balm, wipes.
-Ate at Slowteria
Things we did not like: Punta Laguna. The prices of restaurants! Zebra restaurant was overpriced. We brought our own oatmeal for breakfast and saved a lot of money. We also bought fruit in town.

For future visits, we also have baby sitting services and will be happy to prepare special meals for little appetites. It was nice having you with us, thanks for taking the time from your busy mom schedule to comment about your experience with us.

We just returned from 6 nights at La Zebra and can't wait to return. Our cabana number 5 was spotless, king bed was extremely comfortable, shower hot (water is salty), mosquito net in good shape, and was steps from the beach. We loved the service from the bar and waiters. Breakfast was tasty, coffee strong and good, and drinks were inventive and delicious. We opted out of meals (except breakfast) here as we prefer to eat the 'real' cuisine of the locals in town 8 km away. Beach chairs were comfy, and La Zebra's property is very wide, thus making it seem like the neighbors are far off. Our stay was perfect in most every way. Highly recommend a stay if you want a relaxed, no great frills, romantic, beach vacation.
