“Beautiful sanctuary!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2013 via mobile

Spent time there for a friends wedding, I would love to go back and sway in the hammock, eat breakfast by the beach and wake up to the birds. Some nights they have dancing by the beach. The entrance is very vague and we were not sure where was the office but they greeted us inside and carried our luggage to our bungalow on their backs. Every morning there was orange juice behind our door. The white sand was pretty and our room was just steps to the beach. Wonderful.

I stayed at this gem for a week for friend's wedding that was held on the hotel grounds. Everything about La Zebra was great: staff, beachfront location, clean rooms and Lina's restaurant! I will definitely make this my home in Tulum on my next trip down...

Room Tip: Get a room on the beach

This is a very nice place. The rooms are clean and well layed out. Please keep in mind that there is no airconditioning, the bathroom is separated from the room by saloon style doors (so much for privacy) and you can't put any paper down the toilet. The toilet thing was the biggest drawback. It's really a turnoff sitting next to a basket containing poopy paper. That being said. The hotel/resort is very well layed out. We only stayed in one of the beach side bunglos. Very convenient to the beach and restaurant/bar. The food was excellent and the service was great. The employees work 7 to 10 with one day off so you get to know the staff very well. They are friendly and professional. Most speak very good English some speak a little but it's easy to get your point across if you don't know Spanish. The concierge, Chabely Flores was most helpful. She helped us make reservations for excursions and massages. They personally take the tours themselves to judge weather or not to recommend it to their guest. CAUTION: Excursions, tours and spa services can only be paid for in CASH! A tour to Chichen Itza was $125 US PP. It was worth every penny but really drained our cash reserves. They have parties several times a week that are open to the public. This makes for some very good time. The beach is excellent and the water great. All and all we had a most enjoyable time and would love to go back.

Room Tip: Beach side bunglos are a must.

La Zebra was a perfectly relaxing and delightful location for our vacation. It is a very low key, open air hotel that sits right on the beautiful white sandy beach in Tulum. My husband and I and our 17 year old daughter stayed in March of 2013 for our first time. Our thatched roof cottages blended beautifully into the environment and were simple and comfortable with an open air shower and pretty tile details. We loved our basket of coffee in the morning and enjoyed sitting on our little porch area looking out over the beach with the multitude of tropical sounds of birds in the palm trees. The restaurant is also open air, with a delightful breeze looking out over the ocean. You can dine under roof or out in the open on the sand. The food was delicious with wonderful Mexican flair. Many healthy choices from the local markets as well as delicious smoothies for breakfast or lunch. We couldn't get enough of the La Zebra margaritas which were served to us while lounging on the beach, reading our books and relaxing into complete paradise. The staff was so friendly and eager to provide information about the area, the ruins, the cenotes and any adventures you'd like to take. I would highly recommend planning your next trip to La Zebra Tulum where you will lose yourself in a beautiful paradise.

What we loved - the rooms were very quaint and the beach is awesome. With regret, our room was across the main street from the resort but well equipped and we looked out onto the pool from our bed. The kids enjoyed the very small pool as a nice break from the ocean. I also loved the coffee service to your front door every morning. Nice touch.

What we didn't love - the service, especially in the restaurant. The service is simply horrible. Very, very slow and often waiters having to come back to reconfirm your order then still getting it wrong. No one has really trained them it appears. The food is above average with some outstanding items, but when it takes you an hour to get a simple dish, it doesn't matter what it tastes like (and when your cheeseburger costs $19 USD).

Room Tip: Make sure you confirm if your room is ocean side, or not. Being next to the ocean is wonderful, but...

thank you for your valuable comments, we are happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. We would like to apologize for the slow service, we usually do not have any complaints about it. We wish that you had mentioned this to us at the time it happened so that we would have taken the correct actions. Unlike some other restaurant and bars in the area our menu does shows the prices of our dishes. You also have to consider that due to our location , our prices have to be a bit higher.

WE stayed at La Zebra in March 2013 for the second time and have already booked our reservations for 2014! It is in a lovely area right on the beach outside of Tulum. The rooms are lovely (though they have that simple feel that pervades all of the Tulum area which I happen to love)and impeccably clean. The people who serve you (in every area of the hotel) are pleasant, well informed, fun, and always wanting to be helpful. The whole time you are there you really feel that they care about the experience you are having. Nothing is cheap in this area (now one of the most visited places in the world) but they are in line re: price, and again, their effort to make your time here as perfect as it can be is priceless. We can hardly wait to go back.

Room Tip: try and stay just a little up from the road as the noise can be bothersome at night. Even one cabana...

We stayed at La Zebra at the recommendation of a business acquaintance from March 17 - 24 2013. We really enjoyed staying there and were very happy have to have been recommended to stay there - I'd go back in a minute!

We stayed in a beachside cabana king.

Aside from a few very small things, it was all that we expected. The largest, yet overall minor issue, was that the design of the bathroom and shower area was too compact. Given the frequency of beach usage, one can expect to drag sand and beach mess through this particular room. The housekeeping is beyond excellent and you'll start each day clean and fresh, but even with the outdoor footwashing pool, you're looking at a fair amount of sand indoors no matter what - which really shouldn't be a surprise here. Think of it as the ultimate in beach camping and you'll be happy!

The very few downsides that we experienced were truly minor, but worth a mention.
First - the neighboring property has turkey (maybe more than one?) And he's great as an alarm clock if you want to get up at his schedule. We stayed in Cabana 5 and his pen was directly behind us... loud, loud, loud at all hours. Not something under the control of La Zebra, I think - but worth noting.

Sunday and Weds - loud music nights at Lina's. Fine by us, but maybe not by everyone. They lost power both of those nights that we were there so maybe you'll get a reprieve also? It seems like a good time if you enjoy the party though.

Housekeeping service was the best we've had, anywhere ever. Reliable and thorough. Tip well!

The beach was uncrowded, always. Even with a full house of tenants, La Zebra was mellow - and that's what we were after. Kids there had plenty to do and didn't interfere with adults. Yet, it seemed to also be a nice spot for families, based on our observations of the few families staying there while we did.

The beach was terrific, as you'd expect. JUST remote enough to have space and amenities. Perfect. No actual surf, but as a surfer I noted that the kite surfers were having GREAT conditions... My understanding is that the wave conditions at La Zebra vary. Although we found ourselves with windy, strong and irregular surf, the water and waves were very refreshing. There was an undertow at the time of our visit that might be worth noting for parents of small children, but certainly nothing worthy of concern...monitor your kids in the water and they'll be fine.

We examined the jungle side accommodations - They looked nice, but I was immediately glad we chose beachside.

Lina's menu is excellent as is its service, but it doesn't vary, so eat a meal here and there. Lots of great options nearby.

Room Tip: Cabana 5 seemed to have the perfect balance of beach and breeze. During a less breezy season, it mig...
