What we loved - the rooms were very quaint and the beach is awesome. With regret, our room was across the main street from the resort but well equipped and we looked out onto the pool from our bed. The kids enjoyed the very small pool as a nice break from the ocean. I also loved the coffee service to your front door every morning. Nice touch.

What we didn't love - the service, especially in the restaurant. The service is simply horrible. Very, very slow and often waiters having to come back to reconfirm your order then still getting it wrong. No one has really trained them it appears. The food is above average with some outstanding items, but when it takes you an hour to get a simple dish, it doesn't matter what it tastes like (and when your cheeseburger costs $19 USD).

Room Tip: Make sure you confirm if your room is ocean side, or not. Being next to the ocean is wonderful, but...

thank you for your valuable comments, we are happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. We would like to apologize for the slow service, we usually do not have any complaints about it. We wish that you had mentioned this to us at the time it happened so that we would have taken the correct actions. Unlike some other restaurant and bars in the area our menu does shows the prices of our dishes. You also have to consider that due to our location , our prices have to be a bit higher.

WE stayed at La Zebra in March 2013 for the second time and have already booked our reservations for 2014! It is in a lovely area right on the beach outside of Tulum. The rooms are lovely (though they have that simple feel that pervades all of the Tulum area which I happen to love)and impeccably clean. The people who serve you (in every area of the hotel) are pleasant, well informed, fun, and always wanting to be helpful. The whole time you are there you really feel that they care about the experience you are having. Nothing is cheap in this area (now one of the most visited places in the world) but they are in line re: price, and again, their effort to make your time here as perfect as it can be is priceless. We can hardly wait to go back.

Room Tip: try and stay just a little up from the road as the noise can be bothersome at night. Even one cabana...

We stayed at La Zebra at the recommendation of a business acquaintance from March 17 - 24 2013. We really enjoyed staying there and were very happy have to have been recommended to stay there - I'd go back in a minute!

We stayed in a beachside cabana king.

Aside from a few very small things, it was all that we expected. The largest, yet overall minor issue, was that the design of the bathroom and shower area was too compact. Given the frequency of beach usage, one can expect to drag sand and beach mess through this particular room. The housekeeping is beyond excellent and you'll start each day clean and fresh, but even with the outdoor footwashing pool, you're looking at a fair amount of sand indoors no matter what - which really shouldn't be a surprise here. Think of it as the ultimate in beach camping and you'll be happy!

The very few downsides that we experienced were truly minor, but worth a mention.
First - the neighboring property has turkey (maybe more than one?) And he's great as an alarm clock if you want to get up at his schedule. We stayed in Cabana 5 and his pen was directly behind us... loud, loud, loud at all hours. Not something under the control of La Zebra, I think - but worth noting.

Sunday and Weds - loud music nights at Lina's. Fine by us, but maybe not by everyone. They lost power both of those nights that we were there so maybe you'll get a reprieve also? It seems like a good time if you enjoy the party though.

Housekeeping service was the best we've had, anywhere ever. Reliable and thorough. Tip well!

The beach was uncrowded, always. Even with a full house of tenants, La Zebra was mellow - and that's what we were after. Kids there had plenty to do and didn't interfere with adults. Yet, it seemed to also be a nice spot for families, based on our observations of the few families staying there while we did.

The beach was terrific, as you'd expect. JUST remote enough to have space and amenities. Perfect. No actual surf, but as a surfer I noted that the kite surfers were having GREAT conditions... My understanding is that the wave conditions at La Zebra vary. Although we found ourselves with windy, strong and irregular surf, the water and waves were very refreshing. There was an undertow at the time of our visit that might be worth noting for parents of small children, but certainly nothing worthy of concern...monitor your kids in the water and they'll be fine.

We examined the jungle side accommodations - They looked nice, but I was immediately glad we chose beachside.

Lina's menu is excellent as is its service, but it doesn't vary, so eat a meal here and there. Lots of great options nearby.

Room Tip: Cabana 5 seemed to have the perfect balance of beach and breeze. During a less breezy season, it mig...

We just got back from a week in Tulum where we stayed at La Zebra for 3 of the 7 nights. We were in the Cabana King cabana which is right on the beach. We woke up to the sounds of the ocean and coffee on the porch every morning (though by the time we drank it it was not very hot). All of Tulum is a bit rustic, the room has no TV, the energy is generator powered so the lights at night are very dim, there is no door to the bathroom, the room has an open air set up so it gets rather intimate with the person you are staying with.... You cannot flush toilet paper down the toilet anywhere you go in Tulum because it is all an eco-resort. I personally loved the rustic qualities, but my boyfriend prefers something a little more upscale with a TV, AC and a bathroom door. It just depends what you are looking for.

The room was very clean and cleaned every day. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant was delicious. The beach was pristine. One issue was that they never had beach towels in the morning, the delivery was always late so we had to take the towels from our room to the beach which was not the end of the world.

The location is great. You can walk to Casa Banana and Hertwood (sp?) two fabulous restaurants right down the road. and it is easy to get cabs anywhere else you want to go.

I would bring a flashlight, walking on the roads at night and searching for things in your bag in the room at night are challenging without one.

I would recommend La Zebra to anyone looking for a hotel in Tulum and would stay there again.

thank you so much for your review, we are glad to hear that you had a pleasant stay with us. Regarding the towel issue, we just want to apologize again for the inconvenience. Fortunately this is no longer a problem due to the fact we were able to find a better laundry service. We loved having you with us, hope to see you again soon.

We booked La Zebra Hotel for our Tulum wedding celebration, Feb. 28 through March 3. It was nothing short of amazing. To have this perfect beach setting to swim, lounge, eat and dance with family and friends over the course of the weekend, it was like a dream.

My husband and I have stayed at La Zebra off and on throughout the years and have always been very pleased with the rooms, staff, food, and most of all the beach. In my opinion, best beach in Tulum, hands down. When we began planning our wedding, there was no question where it would be. And La Zebra was perfect. Our family and friends booked the 16 rooms on the property, and had the place almost entirely to ourselves for 3 days. We had races on the beach, parties in the Master Suite (seriously the best room on the property with 2 rooms separated by an outdoor tub/lounge area), swam in the ocean at night, and used the round deck as the morning spot for coffee (delivered to your doorstep!) and Reefer Madness juice (chaya - like spinach, pineapple and ginger), to catch up on the antics from the night before.

I first worked with Kattrina Leach as the hotel Wedding Coordinator, and she was so communicative and helpful in developing my Mexican beach wedding vision. She suggested some really unique ideas for activities for our family and friends - we rented a boat to take family and friends snorkeling past the ruins and on the reef, a Mayan clay blessing at cenote Zacil ha for the bridal party, and yoga on the beach the morning of the wedding. I then worked with Elisa Meani the last couple of months in the planning process, and she executed all of the last minute details perfectly. Elisa was so great in handling all of the logistics - she arranged the shuttles, worked with the staff, managed the vendors, coordinated our Rehearsal Dinner/Cocktail Party at Mezzanine, and personally put everything together the day of the wedding. It was perfect, and she helped me to remain stress free and relaxed throughout it all. And, the best part of all, Elisa arranged to have Salvador, the ice cream cart guy, serve at my wedding! He was my one request that I wanted most of all - he has the most delicious coconut and elote ice cream, and you can usually find him on the beach road. I worked with Eduardo Alvarado for photography (eduardoalvaradophoto.com) and he and 2 other photographers were fantastic! They were everywhere, took so many candid pictures of everyone.

As far as the hotel itself, we couldn't have asked for anything more. The staff was so attentive, knew us by name from the moment we arrived, and worked non-stop for the next 3 days to ensure everyone, all of our family and friends, had everything they needed. The food was delicious, drinks were divine (esp the mezcal cocktails), and it was a great location - far enough south where you feel separated from noise and tourists, yet within close walking distance to many great restaurants/hotels in the area. I will say that we were there during a very unusual cold front and we actually needed blankets at night, as it was about 50-55 farenheit at night. A few of us didn't actually find the blankets until the second night, they are kept in the closets. So you all know for next time.

Again, it was perfect. I think back and I really don't think anything could have been better. La Zebra provided the most beautiful backdrop for three days in heaven.

Room Tip: Master Suite is the best. Ocean is literally steps outside of your door, and 2 separate rooms are di...

Was only able to stop in for coffee after a morning fishing at Boca Paila. But the coffee was fantastic (great equipment, Starbucks has nothing on La Zebra!!) the place looked great and the view was beautiful as always. Have never stayed here, only dinner and drinks. But am always impressed with the operation. My favorite Tulum dinner spot, sitting on the sofa on the beach is so unique and awesome!

I stayed recently for 3 nights at one of their beachside cabanas and it was fantastic. The hotel is located on one of the best parts of the beach, close to many restaurants.

The staff was also quite amazing, they were very helpful with everything we needed and quite prompt. The restaurant makes delicious meals, which makes relaxing at the beach even better. I would definitely stay here again.
