“Still wonderful a second time back.”
Reviewed May 26, 2011

Remembering how difficult it was to leave last time, I stayed a few more days this time. This hotel has a magical ability to melt all your stress away. The rooms are comfortable though you'd unlikely spend much time in it, given that the beautiful beach is only steps away.

The restaurant, recently re-christened "Lina's Mexican Kitchen", still serves up some of the best Mexican food I've still yet to find. Though it's Mexican, it's not really what you're used to at your corner Mexican joint stateside. I think refined "street-style" cuisine might be close... inspired by the wonderful tastes of street food, but definitely not street food. The bar continues to serve up awesome cocktails using only fresh squeezed fruit juices, squeezed in-house every single day. And don't forget the Sunday Salsa parties, which include free Salsa lessons!

The staff is wonderful. Always there when you need them, but never in your face... and somehow they always remember your name!

And if you start to stress about being away from everything, there is wi-fi to let you take quick peek at the news, email, etc. And then go get a massage on an outdoor table which the concierge Hernan can arrange for you.

Go during the shoulder months, i.e. a 2-3 weeks before and after low season. Rates are a steal, and you get to share the beach with only a handful of people. Sometimes you even get the whole beach to yourself.

Be warned though: this is high end rustic eco-chic, so no flat panel tv or a/c!

The entire experience was great! We loved everything about La Zabra and can't wait to go back. The food, especially the nachos with steak are a must have as are the mojitos. The entire staff is very friendly and willing to help you with anything.

What I loved about it was that it was so quiet and relaxing, if you're looking to go out, this isn't the place. It's somewhere to get away from everything so don't go with someone you can't see yourself spending alone time. We wanted to do so many things but ended up just staying at the hotel and walking along the beach, there was no need to go anywhere. The cabanas are absolutely adorable. The time we went it was a bit windy, more like a constant wind that was just annoying but this had to do with the season. I would recommend this hotel to everyone it was an unforgettable vacation.

Get that "off the grid" feel without the scariness of actually going off the grid. :) There are no power lines along this strip of the beach, so at night it's DARK. All of the hotels on the strip run on their own generators, but there was never a difficulty with using or charging our electronics. Smartest thing we did was bring a little flashlight to get around at night. The flashlight also helped make us more visible to cars as we were walking along the road visiting other restaurants. Bottom line you can't get all those brilliant stars in the sky without the darkness - just BEAUTIFUL.
The beach? - perfect. The staff is always maintaining the cleanliness of the shore line. The water? - bright blue, warm, and just the right amount of wave.
It's obvious that people were here to relax - and with the sound of the waves, the breeze in the trees, and the look of the beach - we got a little caught up in it all.
The hotel's restaurant, Lina's Kitchen, was amazing. Its situation on the beach, the ambiance - one of the most romantic places we've eaten at on planet earth. The doors wide open, the lights above swaying in the breeze, and the view of the ocean??! ... INCREDIBLE. Oh, and the food was scrumptious.
Come prepared for the harsh Mexican sun, might I suggest SPF90!! Haha. And if you get freaked out by little insects paying you a visit in your room then you may want to visit somewhere a little less natural.
We love you La Zebra!!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Le Zebra for one week on May 2. We stayed in Cabana number 6. It was probably one of the most relaxing vacations of our lives. We had incredible whether, the resort was quiet and uncrowded despite being full - the beach was gorgeous. It was exactly what we were after - we stayed at or around the resort the entire time with the exception of one day when we visited the ruins.

I have three minor issues:

1) While the food was generally very good it was very expensive (FYI - the food in Tulum is very good but don't expect any deal becasue you are in Mexico - I can eat and drink for less money in NYC) to the point at times where you feel like you are getting ripped off (and that does not feel good regardless of how beautiful the beach is). For example, my boyfriend ordered the $18 flank steak one night which was marginal at best and had to purchase a baked potato which was tiny for an additional =$5. La Zebra was one of the few bars on the beach that did not offer a drink special or a happy hour. It would have been nice to get some sort of a deal on drinks given we stayed there for an entire week. We took a taxi our last few meals up to Mateos a few miles up the road - good food and decent prices relatively speaking.

2) The other thing that was a litle annoying was when we were sitting on the beach I had to go to the bar and order drinks - then the waiter would insist on bringing me the drinks so he could earn a tip. I have no problem tipping but if I have to get up and order the drinks I might as well stay and carry them back instead of paying someone to do it for me. The service was not terrible but there is room for improvement. There was not consistency on being served on the beach.

3) The other thing that was a little annoying was that the property/land adjacent to the beachfront cabanas has a well on it and people camping or visiting there. A few mornings, very early in the morning, we were awakened by someone pumping water out of a rickety old well. When we checked out we brought this to the hotels attention and they said they would look into it.

All in all - we had a great time and I would go back to La Zebra. To be fair, they do a good job and I think they have high standards but there is room for a little improvement.

We stayed here in March 11 for 4nights - the location is spectacular. Sitting on the beach looking at the ocean and drinking amazing cocktails....I could have done it forever. We stayed in a combination of rooms - jungle, partial beachfront and owners apartment. The owner's apartment was excellent - we never really heard the people from the restaurant. The jungle rooms are across the road at the back of the resort - they were small but well finished and had their own pool. The partial beachfront cabana's were nice, but ventilation was a bit of a problem (a little stuffy) and they were quite close together. The water pressure in all rooms was not really good, and the water is salty, but it is eco friendly, so we adjusted to this. Roberto behind the bar makes amazing cocktails and service is brilliant. All of the waiters were really friendly and helpful, but sometimes were slow getting our orders and a couple of times forgot we had ordered until we chased them up 15 mins later. The cocktails were great though and food was excellent. La Zebra is my definition of heaven!!!

My wife, son and I just finished booking our week vacation to Cancun & Tulum in July. We've stayed in the Tulum area many times but never at this place. When we saw the "Beach Front Luxury Shack" we new we had found what we were looking for. In any case, I just wanted to share that Jennifer in reservations at this place has been SO helpful. Can't wait to meet her in person. She was super prompt in responding to all my questions and even gave us a special deal to help make my decision easier. So far, so good. More to come after our visit in July.

We booked beach cabana 1 great location loved the interior however it is open to elements .First night was very windy and was so noisy we didnt get much sleep beds felt damp but prob because so close to sea etc.

Customer service we felt was poor but maybe because we had come from a 5 star resort were everyone was so eagar to please. Also tipps are added to bill so no need to tip.

Sunday night was very busy,we waited 1 hour for some ice cream then were told there was none left and they charged us for it! I dont feel you were given any better service then others dining there even though we were also staying in their accomadation.

The beds on the beach were just for guests however there were lots of people using them that werent staying at the hotel plus we had a mexican family right outside our room all day sunday and they were throwing cans of beer in front of our door.

Food was amazing if expensive

I would reccomend if room prices were cheaper,we paid £250 per night for two adults and two children, and they improved their customer service.
