I stayed at this hotel with my parents while we were traveling across the Yucatan. After many adventure-packed days, some relaxing time at the beach was just what we needed. The private beach has hammocks and lounge chairs under umbrellas to enjoy the afternoon without getting too burned. The water was warm and on the calm side, so you can sit and enjoy the Caribbean Sea. If you can get yourself out of bed early, watching the sunrise on the beach was an amazing experience!

We stayed in the room above the Kitchen. It was perfect for our needs with a beautiful view of the water, mosquito hammocks, and fans for the hot evenings. While they have wind powered electricity (which means no a/c), they do leave it on all evening so you can use the fan (unlike other hotels which turn the power off at 2am, leaving you to wake up sweating!). The service was great and the hotel restaurant even better!

Room Tip: They have different rooms with multiple beds to accommodate more people

Stayed 6 nights and loved it. Beautiful spot on the beach, very picturesque. Amazing place for a quiet retreat. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Our rooms were always tidy with even the added touch of the fabulous towel creations! The pastas were great. Delicious homemade bread for morning toast. Yes there are mosquitos but nothing a little insect repellant cant handle, if you are going to stay anywhere in Tulum just bring some with you or cover up. It certainly wasnt bad enough to ruin our stay.

We were also lucky enough to be there just when a few dozen turtle eggs had hatched and were able to rescue them from their journey in the wrong direction, and return them to the sea...definitely an added bonus if your there at the right time!

The beach is beautiful but possibly not the easiest for swimming in with young kids (we have 2 under 3 yrs) but found the public beach beside Paradiso Resort and just a couple resorts down past Zumas where the dive boat is anchored is a great spot for the youngins.

We also discovered a fabulous restaurant called "El Tobano" about 800m futher down the beach on the opp. side, was a fantastic and very memorable meal.

All in all, a great experience staying in Talum and very glad we chose Piedra Escondida as our home for the week and highly reccommend it.

I think that most people that stay here are only there for a day or two. We were here for a week and all I can say is it was an experience we will never forget. Staff is great, food was ordinary but the room above the kitchen horrible. My wife and son had so many bug bites that we had to leave. I got up twice during the night just to put bug spray on. Rooms in July are unbearably hot, even with the 2 fans on. No air conditioning due to the fact the power is supplied by a wind turbine. Good thing was we got out to do alot because you absolutely could not rest in the room. Put 1400 kms on the car. I realize July is not the time of year to visit Tulum without a/c. Where the bugs came from I don't know but they were not mosquitoes. The showers were salt water, which made you feel like you were never clean. If you stay here go next door to their beach as you can actually walk into the water without cutting up your feet. Beautiful setting though, looked idyllic when we first got there but paradise has some drawbacks. Quite a few great little restaurants within walking distance. The last straw for me was sitting across the breakfast table from my wife and son and seeing how miserable they were with all their bites and glum expression so I booked a 5 star suite at the JW Marriot in Cancun for the rest of our stay for only $60 more a night. In Tulum you feel like you interact more with the culture, which is really great. Would I go here again? No, but it has made for great conversation with friends.

We were told that the room was on the beach and it was away from the beach. As soon as we opened the door, urine smell hits you! Bathroom was dirty and run down. Bed smelled urine. We came out right away and asked for a different room but they didn't have any. The desk person, tried to contact the owner but couldn't. So we left the place to go back to Cancun. The owner called us back next day and she refused to give our money back. We disputed with VISA and they did not cancelled the charges. We lost $700 for two nights.

Room Tip: You can be cheated easily with nice pictures of place that is far from reality. Choose brand name hotel.

First of all, thanks to all our clients who wrote us expressing their
indignation.
As we are used to seeing the positive aspects of every situation, in this
case, we want to take advantage to improve our communication about
“cancellation policy”, we think our policy is one of the most favorable used
by small hotels like ours. When clients receive the confirmation it means
that they have “signed” the Cancellation policy.
Fortunately cancellations are less than 3%; eventual disputes are very few,
but there are some clients (no more than three or four in our whole history)
that want to be refunded even if they don’t observe what they have signed.
Invariably they lose their dispute but some seek their revenge by
threatening , formally expressed, “negative review”.
Sometimes reviews arrive from people who haven’t stayed in the hotel!
Now, we are very proud of our reviews, 100% of them are genuine and we are
happy if we receive a “true” four or even three rate because many times
this helps to improve our services.

Piedra Escondida is a very, very nice place. Don't expect luxury from 4 or 5 star hotels, but do expect great views, a private beach, good service (although, this entirely depends on which waiter is serving you!), awesome fruit shakes and most important: a perfect relaxing getaway.
As mentioned, the quality and kindness of the waiters differs a lot. I can't remember their names, but especially the staff in the mornings were sincerely kind and hospitable, while their 'afternoon' colleagues were the opposite. The same goes for the chef, one day we had a delicious lunch, the next day we ordered the same and it was tasteless, boring and a waste of money. We were tolled they just hired a new chef. To compensate, we were offered a complimentary dessert.
The bed was pretty nice, the rooms have mosquito nets and are pretty clean. Though, due to the thatched ceilings you might get visits from lizards or bugs. Do not expect luxury like bath tubs, A/C, TV's and stuff like that. But don't worry, with a beach like that you won't spend much time in the room. No comments about dinner, to me it was a bit expensive and besides, I found a very nice sushi place in town.
I wish I spent more than 3 days at Piedra Escondida! The beach, the breakfasts, the fruit shakes, the cristal clear ocean, I could spend weeks there! Take a look at the beautiful pictures of the hotel, what you see is definitely what you get!!!

Room Tip: Definitely pick room 4, I am glad I did!! Room 4 has by far the best view, with a balcony just meters away from the ocean.
