“the anti-allinclusive”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

Vida Silvestre is at the far end of the Tulum beach road, a short way from the entrance to the Sian Kaan biosphere preserve: a good location.

Silvestre is sort of the anti-allinclusive. This is not the place to come if you need pampering, organized activities, or if you are the type who tends to worry a lot about security. You let yourself in through a large, locked wooden gate. Inside, you find a small compound with five free-standing units. The grounds are very pretty and well-hidden from Tulum's beach road. The units themselves are attractive, and rustic. Despite the fact that units are designed to be open (with screens) to the outdoors, we found our unit to be quite private due to the trees and other vegatation surrounding us. Each unit has an outdoor sitting area, and we enjoyed using ours. We also enjoyed relaxing and cooling off by the pool, which we usually had to ourselves. Just beyond the pool is the jungle, making for a nice and very authentic setting.

Audrey, the property manager, is great: very friendly and willing to do anything to help you enjoy your stay. We had no issues with service at any time.

I think our main concern before coming here would be described as: being at the edge of the jungle, will it be too hot, and/or too buggy? Heat could be an issue (no a/c in these units), but during our visits the wind blew steadily off the ocean and there was plenty of air circulation. The bedroom is on the second floor, and you have a sense of sleeping in the treetops, which you watch and hear swaying in the wind. It's quite pleasant. Bugs were not an issue at all. I'm a human mosquito magnet, and if there is a mosquito within a mile or two it will find me. In six nights I was only bitten a couple of times on the last day, which coincided with a drop in the wind off of the ocean.

We mainly have one suggestion for the owner: my partner and I love discussing our day over coffee first thing in the morning. We wish our unit had had a coffee maker, even something very simple and cheap, so that we would not have had to go out for coffee each morning.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Vida Silvestre.

Our expectations could not have been better met. The architecture of the cabanas was an artistic use of natural materials in a rustic, cozy, spacious way that gave a sense of modernity but didn't lose its connection to the jungle surroundings. The 'villas' were very clean, well equipped and privately situated. The furniture was extremely comfortable and the bed was fantastic. Although not directly on the beach, it was steps away from a pristine stretch of beach with very few people. The access across the street at Dos Ceibas was friendly and provided full service. A perfect blend between beach and jungle. Our host, Audrey, greeted us with a smile at 2AM when we arrived the first night and was extremely friendly and helpful. You rock, Audrey! So sorry we couldn't stay longer at this amazing piece of paradise. We will be back!
