“Beach front bliss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2010

A colleague recommended this hotel for our honeymoon and she was spot on- beach front bliss. Cabana number 8 had it's own front porch with 2 hammocks footsteps from the water. The sizable cabana with a thatched roof had a king size bed complete with mosquito netting and a large bathroom. We loved hearing the waves crash all day and night. The restaurant was also footsteps away, so it was very convenient to get a meal or coffee. There was no tv or phone, which suited us well, we got through lots of books in the hammock. It is roughing it, with a little bit of luxury. All in all, we loved it and would stay again. The only downsides we could think of are two: the beach is not easily swimable and we had to walk down to another beach front to swim easily without danger of stepping on rocks and we had to watch for ants, which are to be expected for the rustic surroundings, but the other hotels have the same issue. We would absolutely recommend this place as the surroundings and staff were amazing.

We did not stay at this hotel, but we ate at the restaurant. We ended up eating here because it was Sunday and El Tabon was closed and I am so glad we did. The waiter was kind when he asked the manager if they could make an exception this one time and take a credit card for payment, and lucky for me they said yes. We were starving after walking up and down looking for different restaurants and an ATM to no avail. By pure luck we ended up sitting just feet away from the crashing waves and enjoyed a delicious meal. Began with chips, salsa, and guacamole and finished with spaghetti without room for dessert. What a nice surprise. Great service, food, and setting.

I wandered in Zamas after reading all the recommendations on Trip Advisor and was able to get a great "walk in" deal of $145 for one of the largest rooms instead of $199.) (The cabana available, very last one down the beach smelled like port-o-let, so we declined that one.) The large rooms happened to be across the street behind a tall fence that is barely lit and quite scarey at night when going back to your room. The rooms do have lights though, no electric outlets. The hair style in Tulum for women (all women) is ponytail, bun or hat, unless you are blessed with natural ringlets as there aren't any hair dryers...so definitely no straight irons! lol.

We were into roughing it a bit, but once we got in the room, I quietly squished the largest bug I've seen in a long time, trying not to alarm my teenage son. Unfortunately, there was an entire community of these bugs living among the decorative bamboo rungs across the top of the mosquito net...inside the net.

The room was extremely large. The bathroom was nice, but not very clean. The sinks and glassware had toothpaste spit/drool left from others before us.

My son and I were happy to have our own beds, but once he counted 5 bugs inside his bed, he jumped in with me. I advised him to turn out the lights and maybe they would leave us alone. (He was wishing for mosquitos instead of these bugs...his wish did come true as the mosquito netting had several holes.) We decided we like the outside of Zamas better than the inside. It's best to zip up your bags to keep the bugs out and stay outside. The music is really loud at night, but if you've been an active tourist, then you're so tired, it didn't matter.

The beach is a little rocky, but we enjoyed climbing the giant rocks and picked up coral and shell pieces that had drifted up. It's great being able to eat breakfast and walk 5 steps back to your beach chair. During the day, it is a peaceful, relaxing and fun place to be...just stay outside. (Also the aqua fresca at the restaurant is yummy...we've made it at home with great success.) I wish I had ordered the fish, because our meals there were not great. Barely passable compared to all our other meals in Mexico.

We would not go back to Zamas. We loved the beach, Edventure tours and Sian Kaan tours in Tulum; just not the giant bugs in our beds. I don't know that I can truly trust reviews on Trip Advisor any more. We were disgusted, one day at Zamas was one day too long. It did make us appreciate every other place we stayed. (We hate all-inclusives; we'd NEVER sign up for that. This was totally a hiking adventure week for us.)

I don't mind rustic, believe me... but there was no more than a foot and a half of space around the bed on any side. If I was in the bedroom, my boyfriend had to go into the bathroom (or outside). There wasn't any place to sit down or PUT stuff, which I found very frustrating (especially considering the price). On the up side, the staff was friendly, the beach was steps from our door, and breakfast at the restaurant is very good. Other minuses, though: the main road through town is about 3 feet outside your door, and the beach is totally exposed to the road.

Zamas was more then just a place to get out of the busy city.
From the second we landed in Mexico I knew that this was going to be special. The wonderful staff at the hotel had arranged us a friendly and reliable ride to and from the airport so when we arrived we didn't have to worry about a thing.
Once arriving in Tulum, we were met by this said staff with smiles and a warm welcome. For being a rustic, get-a-way-from-it-all resort they were really well run. The room was ready when we arrived. Although small, it had all the necessities needed for a beach getaway (including toiletries!) I loved having our own private hammock, which i used every single day to watch the sunrise, to escape the sun for a bit, to sleep! The restaurant had amazing food in which we ate at for every meal it was too good to miss. The best part however was the live music there nightly. From flamenco to the blues it was an amazing bonus to have the entertainment while we eat and to fall asleep too as the wind carried the tunes to our cabana. Every night was a perfect romantic night.
The location of Zamas was perfect! we were able to explore other beaches, spas, and the ruins by foot and by bike. The staff was more then willing to find us yoga classes, massage appointments, and pretty much anything we were interested in doing. It was really helpful to have them pull up the yoga schedule for the resort next door for us to have during our stay.
This resort is not to be missed. It is amazingly special.
Do not miss the Mexican Hot Chocolate, the Agua de Coco, and the grilled fish (watch from the beach for the fishermen selling directly to the restaurant from the days catch)
Special thanks to Anja, Maya, Manuel, Willy and the rest of the staff for their hospitality. We will definitely return and hope to spread the Zamas love.

We had an excellent 6 days at Zamas, 3 in a garden room and 3 in a beach cabana. The reviews and website suggest very basic accomodation so we were a little apprehensive about security, a lack of watertight rooms and no electricity. Don't worry, though, it's an idyllic setting with no sense of a lack of safety (security boxes provided), lovely simple rooms with a wave soundtrack and all in a beautiful, unspoilt town with great places to eat and enjoy the wildlife which adorns the golden beaches. If we were going back, we'd probably choose the garden room which is bigger and a little further away from the restaurant and bar but less authentic. Great place to have a break.

We came back to Zamas, because of the Staff, Food, and nearby Beach. We enjoyed the nightlife music and the Restaurant. The Huts, are lovely and simple. Everything is made just right for our simple way of life. Love it, Love it , Love it. The staff works hard in making you feel at home. The Fish tacos are Excellent! The downside is they want you to pay with cash, they will accept CC. But, they will give you a talk about the extra charge for using it. Like everywhere else, they want CASH. But, it put's a damper on your visit when they start to look at you weird about using a CC to pay for the meal. We did'nt have enough for the Bill in Cash, we left it for the TIP. It's not that they won't take CC, it's that they prefer the Cash. They need to accept the needs of the paying customers for meals and drinks, and not make us feel bad about it. We have money to spend one way or another. All in all we will come back!
