My wife and I spent the last 6 days there for a yoga retreat. We really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately we left very dissatisfied. Here's the breakdown:
The Good: Gorgeous beach front, white sands, delicious, healthy food provided 3-4 times per day with the retreat, beautiful, rustic, hand-built rooms using local materials, gorgeous room(s) for doing yoga, nice showers, very safe, lots of spa treatments and ocean activities available. Staff was very nice and accomodating for a variety of needs.
The Bad: Not at all peaceful like we imagined a yoga retreat would be. The main program for this place is the Bikini Bootcamp, and there was loud, high-paced music playing much of the day each day we were there. We could hear this from our rooms and while doing yoga.
The room we stayed in was right next to the kitchen, on the top floor. It had a beautiful thatched roof, but where the roof meets the walls there is a 4-inch gap letting in all the outside sounds. It was like there was a party in our room the whole week. Plus, insects and a rat got into our room. It was probably looking for the food we brought in for the rest of our trip. Food is not allowed on the property, and that may be why. To boot, there is construction going on next door, which was also quite loud.
Other things: there is no pool, no air conditioning, and you sleep under a bed with mosquito netting (which we didn't mind). Our room was inadequately furnished--only a bench (???) and a single comfy chair, no couch, nowhere for a couple to relax togther in their room without improvising majorly.
Also, they charged us $40 to use crappy internet for a week ($20 per person). Finally there seemed to be lots of miscommunication with regards to events throughout the week, and I blame the Amansala staff. Yes, I know its Mexico, but if we're paying thousands of dollars to be there, I want things to run smoothly!!
In summary, we really wanted to love this place, and there is much to like about it, but if you are sensitive to noise or looking for a quiet peaceful place to do yoga and relax, this is not the place. I don't see how the same place does yoga retreats and "Bikini Bootcamp". However, if you just want to hang out at the beach, don't mind noise, or want to do the Bikini Bootcamp, its more likely you'll like it. At least stop by Amansala for some food. You might want to try Maya Tulum next door if you're looking for a quiet place.
