“Amazing Menu”

The food is to good to be able to describe in words. You will have to try it to believe it. Two tips: Take bug spray and get there early or you will have a wait.

“Pass!!!!”
Reviewed June 5, 2013 via mobile

Everyone's rants and raves I am sorry but not the best in Tulum at all!!!!!!!!!!!

Waited over an hour for food finally we get the cool board (the menu) and everything was crossed out. We got the scraps of food that was left and it was just blah. Could have done without a meal here. The salad was just ok and the drinks were undrinkable. We had a watermelon drink and a margarita had to return them both!
The steak was flavorful because it is cooked on the wood fire. But still disappointing!

Not only were we disappointed with meal but the bill was out of control for what we had. The value is just not there.

I like the atmosphere here and the service is ok. Not the best in Tulum. I heard the owners are from NY they definitely disappointed this group of New Yorkers!

Won't be returning because it is a total waste of time and money.

“Worth it!”
Reviewed June 5, 2013

No one could ever realize how challenging a restaurant like this is to pull off in the middle of the nowhere in Mexico.... My wife and I have a B & B down here.

They've created a truly unique 5 star jungle bistro with excellent food & artisan cocktails. From the pineapple habanero margarita to the passion in the jungle rum cocktail... My wife's grouper was off the hook and I loved the arranchera steak with sweet potato. Get the side dishes... The beets and eggplant were great. All of it is cooked with a wood burning oven. I love their kitchen, you see everything going on. The service is very good and friendly too.

People mention it's pricey. It's not at all considering we're you are.... Out in the middle of the frick'in jungle and it is by far the best restaurant in the region. The Chef drives some 125 mile round trip into the Yucatan to buy perfect organic veggies... Well done! I'm just happy he's not in NYC.

We'll be back. Saludos!

“Dining in the jungle with a little pretentiousness”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

My husband and I had mixed feelings regarding this restaurant. The environment was rustic however very chic. Definitely what we were looking for with dining in Tulum. The bartenders barely made eye contact and certainly did not converse. The cocktails were very fresh and tasty. Our server was cordial however did not provide much input regarding the menu when requested. We ordered the slow roasted octopus which was tender and delicious...perhaps a bit too much oil though. We also had a steak which was average and some roasted vegetables that were tasty but again too much oil. Overall, Hartwood was not our favorite restaurant from our experienced in Tulum however there is great potential if they lose some of the pretentiousness and just focus on quality, ambience, and service. We would try it again.

“Outdoor rustic chic for foodies”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

We got there right when they opened at 6pm and were a flood of guests showed up soon after. Beautiful outdoor setting with an open kitchen. There was a constant burning of sage which I presume was to keep the mosquitoes away, but I don't think that helped as we came away with several bites on our legs. Be sure to rub down with bug repellant before you go. The drinks were unique and delicious. We had a lovely passionfruit concoction that was devine. All the food was as we hoped, but we got a bit greedy and didn't realize how big the portions were. We ended up with a lot of left overs which sucks when you are staying in tulum where there is usually no in room fridge. The house standard of roast pork was perfectly tender. The sea bass was slightly overdone but not terrible. The waitstaff was attentive. A bit pricey, but the quality and creativity were up to par. yum!
