“Regular Mexican cafe”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

We have chosen Mateo's for our lunch firstly due to good reviews on tripadvisor, secondly due to the fact there always were people when we were passing by! Also during the lunch time when most of restaurants were either closed or did not show any signs of life. So, general feedback regarding food: nothing special. I have tried so much recommended fish tacos. They are completely tasteless. But chipotle sauce which goes together with them.... This was amazing! Prices are quite low. Initially we wanted to enjoy terrace with sea view, but we were told it was closed during daytime.

We've been traveling to Tulum for over 10 years and Mateo's has always been one of the tried and true favorites. This trip we went twice. After a horrible first meal, we chalked it up to being the slow season. We went back a couple of days later, sent our food back again and never went back during the two weeks we were there. We were served spoiled shrimp, and then spoiled bacon. When we asked the waiter ( we actually tried to give them a third chance) to see if there was a newer package of bacon that they could open....he returned telling us we should probably order something else because "it looked scary." We left. We miss our Mateo's!!

“Is the atmosphere worth the price?”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

Great looking restaurant. Fantastic service. Average and extremely expensive food; nothing special. The margaritas were also nothing to brag about. Is the atmosphere worth it? Maybe and it's totally your call as you walk by and take a look. Perhaps it's a place to have a beer and relax after a day at the beach, but wouldn't recommend the food.

“Fun hangout”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

We stopped at Mateo's to have a margarita on our first day in Tulum, and ended up going back a few times during our stay. They make great margaritas! The staff are all really nice. One of the bartenders even lent me his "Off" one evening when I was being eaten alive by mosquitos. The fish tacos were very good. We really enjoyed the vibe of the place. Although it is very much a tourist place, it has good music, and a relaxing vibe that made it really enjoyable for us.

“Overpriced and not that great”
Reviewed June 24, 2014

Yesterday, we visited Tulum from Cancun for a day trip. We saw that Mateo's was busy and had good reviews. They also had a sign saying "Best Fish Tacos in the World." We were so excited to enjoy some of the local delicacy, but were very disappointed. There was very little fish in each taco, and the plate cost almost $10. These prices seemed very high for Mexico, and for food that was just O.K. The ambience was fun and the staff was friendly. I rarely write reviews that don't rave about the food, but we were unimpressed with this place and wanted to share our thoughts.
