This was our first visit to tulum and we went to Mateos twice in three days if that is any indication of how much we loved it. This is a three story restaurant/bar that has an awesome view of the ocean and a little Market that is great for people watching. The food was very good and very authentic. Basic and delicious. They had drink specials the night we were there and their fruity drinks were quite good. When we return to tulum, and we will, we will be back!

If you get a chance to experience a sunset in Tulum, you need to view it from Mateo's sunset tower. It is located upstairs from the restaurant and has an unobstructed 360 degree viewing of the area. The drinks are fantastic as well! The strawberry basil and the cucumber serrano margaritas were among the favorites in our group! The food is fantastic as well! The fish tacos are to die for and the bacon=wrapped shrimp are fabulous!! If you are a sports fan they have big screen tvs on in the rear bar. Mateo's is on our must-do list for our visit to Tulum in May.

We enjoyed Mateo's two day's in a row! Is it the best - no - but the atmosphere and service were great, and the food was good! Try the shish kabob's! Even better than the fish tacos!

We loved this place! Found it the first night of our trip and went there almost every evening after. Even if you don't normally like fish tacos, you'll like theirs! I ordered the sampler platter and wow...what a great deal (steak, shrimp and lots of other yummy stuff). The nights we tried other places were big let downs compaired. Our other favorite place was an italian (LOL) restaurant in Downtown Tulum, but I can't remember the name of it. GREAT pizza with sausage and jalopenos!

Supposedly the best, but sadly, was not the case. Fish tacos at Mateo's feature really nice fish, but tortillas are sad and boring and not homemade, and the toppings are just a piece of avocado and some cabbage. We had better fish tacos at a random place in Tulum proper, you know, the place on the corner with the kitchen full of women making tortillas by hand, with plastic chairs and tables, and Mexican soap opera blasting from the TV. Mateo's is a bit of a syndicate...a little slice of Rainforest Cafe imported from your local mall...$15 for 3 fish tacos and one beer.
