“Amazing...”
Reviewed May 19, 2011

This was our first time to Mexico and I have to say, they nailed it. We wanted to stay well away from any large hotel and the all-inclusives. We wanted slow and easy. In essence, we wanted the Corona commercial. And in Tulum, this is what we got.

By luck we found Hip Hotels after doing an extensive search. Everything that I found on the web was true. It is clean, small, affordable (not the most expensive, not the cheapest), the food was good, the staff was incredibly nice. We stayed in room 24, just off the beach on the second floor of one of the bungalows. The rooms were cleaned each day with fresh towels and sheets. The shower had good water pressure and ample hot water. A nice hammock on the patio was great to lay in and listen to the waves.

The restaurant: Excellent. The first night we got there we ordered a whole fish. They brought us out a whole Red Grouper. Freaking amazing. From there on out we ate breakfast and lunch there each day. Generally we ate lunch down in our beach chairs where the staff brought us drinks and food. We ventured out for dinners in the area (go to Hartwood at least one night) just to mix it up. I cant say enough about the staff running the restaurant. Johan is the manager and he has a gang that works with him that is funny and willing to go out of their way. One night they went out and cut us fresh aloe plants for my girlfriends sunburnt legs. Johan and his gang really did an amazing job and for the record, they speak perfect english...

Room Tip: Rooms 23 and 24 seem to be the best

We are a couple of the Netherlands and stayed here 4 nights. I agree with the other reviewer that this hotel is ok but not more than that. The location is great, beach is awasome. Rooms are large but old. IN my opinion the price is way too high. We paid $200 per night and expect more for that especially in Mexico. Bed is perfect but rest needs an update. Room has nothing extra and our room (15) had a lot of cracks and broken stuff. The staff is friendly but have absolutely no experience at all and speak poor English besides Johan the manager of the place. Every single time we ordered something we had to wait for ever and was never complete. Breakfast is a pain in the ...Why not a easy standard breakfast menu? eggs is included but toast not. It would help to put an American or european manger there for a while. very frustrating. besides that the prices are at a European level and way too high. We didn't stay for Diner as it looked empty and not cosy at all. outsides are different nice places for a nice diner.

When I discovered that the S&S Hip Hotel was owned by the same people who own Ana Y Jose's, choosing this hotel was a no-brainer. I knew that this would be a glitch-free vacation and it was. We were going to stay at another favorite hotel in the area, but the fact that a rental car was included in the pricing, along with 2 massages and an American breakfast, making this choice was easy.
We were met at the airport by a very handsome man named Pepe who walked us across the street to the rental car. We signed a few papers and we were off. No hassles.
We stayed in room 10, an upper level ocean view room with a palapa covered porch. The room decor was modern and minimalist. The floor of the shower was painted the color of the ocean. There were screened louvered windows on all walls that allowed the breezes to cool the room. There was also a ceiling fan. There was an outlet by the bathroom sink that we used to charge our phones. We did not bring a hair dryer as this hotel uses alternate sources of energy. We could get Wifi in our room, which was halfway between the office and the restaurant. There was a screen door (as well as heavier glass paned door) that locked. We locked the screen door at night and could hear the waves crashing on the beach which, along with the breeze, made for a wonderful night's sleep. The beds were comfortable.
The food at the restaurant was wonderful. The breakfast is very generous. It has an outdoor eating area also and great views. We could get the Wifi in the restaurant. They also have an area in the restaurant with a couch, chairs and coffee table where you can have a drink and visit.
There were lots of palapas and beach chairs on the beach and we only had trouble find a free one once, and that was over the New Year holiday weekend when the hotel and general area was pretty busy.
The beach in front of this hotel is wonderful with a flat sandy bottom. You can take long walks either way. This hotel is one of the last few along the beach. We walked into the biosphere from here, take water with you.
And last, but not least, the staff were incredibly kind and gracious.
The only cons I can think of, and it really is more a matter of personal preference, is that they do not have wash cloths here. So if you like to shower with a wash cloth, bring a couple with you. And the other con is there are no reading lights by the bed, there are only overhead lights.
Bring a small flashlight or lantern. If you walk down the road (or beach) at night to go to another restaurant, it is quite dark. It will make it easier for the cars to see you and for you to find your way without tripping.

Excellent hotel!!!!! This is eco hotel, located right on the sand of Tulum beach. You wont need even flip flops to get around:)).
Front desk is nice and people who work there where very helpful and kind.
Room was amazing, all your basic needs where there - comfy bed, shower, safe. Hummock outside. In the night you can hear waves and wind and it makes you feel like sleeping in the beach.
Best relaxed hotel we ever been! Highly recommend!!!!!!!!!
There is restaurant on the site, but food was very average, there are much better options just short walk away. Go for breakfast in La Zebra and dinner Posada Margharita or El Tabano.

My husband and I travel alot and enjoy the sun as well as touring antiquities. We discovered this spot south of Tulum a couple of years ago and we like S and S Hip the best among the places we have stayed. You wouldn't come here if you wanted to watch the Tube so that really was not an issue for us. But, among the 'eco-friendly' cabana-style hotels this is among the best: reasonably priced, simply but very comfortably arranged furnishings and plumbing, with 24 hour electicity and easy access to the web in the spacious and comfortable reception area. Very kind and helpful staff,, good breakfasts. The beach and its chairs and shading are perfect for long days of reading/relaxing!

We stayed for 4 nights in an Oceanfront room. It was accomodating and a simply beautiful property. We had private transfer to and from the airport, massages, breakfast and all taxes included. The service was great and the rooms were simple. Don't go here if you are looking for TV, wild parties, and a "spring break" type experience. All of the staff was amazing. The rooms were clean, well laid out, but the view is what takes the cake. It was THE BEST EVER. We will be coming back again.

Recently returned from Tulum and loved this hotel. Perfect escape. The Manager and staff were extremely efficient and helpful. It was quick and easy to book via e-mail (in comparrison to other Tulum hotels which to days to respond to my inquiries), the airport transfer was ready to greet us when we landed and the hotel Manager was waiting to welcome us when we arrived late at night.
The continental breakfast was great - no need to order additional food. We were traveling with our 18month old and the staff could not do enough to accommodate our extra requests. The beach front rooms were very clean, and well built. The bathroom was great and the shower had strong pressure and hot water (not standard in Tulum). I also indulged in a spa treatment while we were there, it was absolute bliss and the massage therapist was very knowledgeable.
