Owner description: Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Coba.[1] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.[1] Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.[1]

The sheer beauty of these ruins are breathtaking. Not as grand in scale as Chitzen Itza, but just as amazing in it's majesty. There are no facilities in the park, so use the restroom first and take water. An absolute must see!

We visited on a hot day in July and the heat was brutal. The ruins are smaller than they look in pictures and have crumbled a good bit (as would be expected). It would be much more enjoyable to visit in cooler month. The beach is awesome, but very small. So it can be totally overloaded with people which keeps us from enjoying it as much.

This is a don't miss spot when you're visiting the Riviera Maya. Breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and history to learn about in a pristine national park. Will definitely visit again when we return.

I've been before and went back just a few days ago. The ruins are cool and the beach is beautiful. The colors of the water and sky are amazing.

We have been to many ruins in Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico. The ruins at Tulum had the most beautiful landscape, head and shoulders above the others. It must have been spectacular in its day. It was the first city that we have come upon that was walled and I found that very interesting to see. If you go, pay for the train at only MX $20 because it is hot! Save your stamina for walking through the ruins. Parking was MX $70 and entrance fee was MX $35. Be sure to catch the performance of the Dance of the Flyers before leaving the shop area. It's free (be sure to give a donation at the end of the performance).
