We went on an excursion from the Barcelo in Riviera Maya to Tulum. After picking up other people along the way and then switching buses at a gas station, we finally made it to Tulum in an hour and half. I think if we had taken a taxi ourselves, it would have taken a third of the time. One other annoyance was that we were told we had to buy mosquito spray at $8 an ounce. The guide basically scared everyone into buying a bottle for every two people in order to protect ourselves in the "jungle". Tulum, on this day at least, did not have a bug in site. You are not in the jungle. What a racket.
Our tour guide gave us only minimal information about Tulum. The sun was beating down on this dustbowl and nothing is marked with information. Years ago, you could climb on the ruins, but now they are roped off. We were not instructed to bring bathing suits so we could not swim in the nearby ocean. After a quick walk around, my husband and teens were heading to the exit. I thought my husband was joking when he asked me if I wanted a Starbucks. I laughingly said yes and then turned around to actually see one there! Starbucks, sadly, was the highlight of our trip to Tulum.
