Owner description: Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Coba.[1] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.[1] Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.[1]

All this tour did was wet my appetite for a larger ruin. You couldn't "touch" anything (buildings and "pyramid" were roped off) and it was hot. Wow was it hot. No shade, being close to the ocean was beautiful, but way too crowded as a result of it being so small.

In short, tons of people, not a lot of space, aggressive vendors, compressed time frame. If I were speaking to someone insisting on going I would strongly suggest grab a cab and do it early in the morning. you really don't need a guide, everything is on the signs. And.. Xel-ha has a mock up miniature of the entire site

It is amazing to see these structures and culture at such a breathtaking location. It is bigger and more expansive than I expected, and I am a native Mexican. THEY DO NOT ACCEPT DOLLARS (or any foreign currency), and there is a 59 pesos admission fee. Go early. The heat can be oppressive.

The ruins are on the coast and tell an interesting story about the people with different backgrounds have met there a long time ago. Different cultures are mingled.

A must see! Mayan ruins, iguanas and what a view. Take the stairs down to the beach and enjoy a swim in this gorgeous ocean. The clear warm water are so welcoming!

We decided to adventure out of our resort and head to Tulum by ourselves on the bus. The ruins are easy to find from the main road. We paid $59 pesos to get into the ruins, had a wonder round. I'd suggest getting there early as you can. The tours start arriving at around 10am and once the people with the tours arrived we were being pushed and shoved by Americans. We decided to leave once the tours arrived. We made a walk down to the Santa fe beach a ten minute walk away from the ruins and this is a beautiful beach, worth a visit after the ruins.
