Owner description: Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Coba.[1] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.[1] Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.[1]

Definitely make an effort to stop by and see the ruins..
You can opt to have a guide..we didn't take one but feel like we should have. It's right by the beach, so by all means bring packed lunch and a beach towel to take a cool dip after walking around in the baking sun!

The ruins and the setting on the beach were just astounding. We went with a private tour and arrived just as the gates opened. We were done before the crowds and the heat arrived. We were blown away with the beauty of the beach and plan to return and stay in the area.

While in Puerto Morelos we went on a tour of the Mayan ruins at Tulum. Awesome tour and breathtaking views. Tulum being the only ruins that are by the ocean. You've got opportunity for great pictures and access to a bueatiful white sand beach below the ruins.

I thought this was a great quick trip. We stayed in Tulum and had a rental car. To keep it affordable we just drove into the area and parked the car. This is a big tourist attraction so prepare to get bombarded with people trying to give you a tour and take you to the ruins. If you are on a budget park the car and walk. Its about a 5-10 minute walk. Prepare yourself to be surrounded by vendors as this is a huge place to sell to tourists.

If you are in the area you have to go see the ruins, they are spectacular. Bring comfortable walking shoes, you'll need them!
