Owner description: Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Coba.[1] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.[1] Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.[1]

These ruins are very impressive. It is easy to see why the Mayans chose this location for one of their busiest seaport villages. The main beach in the complex was closed but the stairs to the smaller beach were open and you can easily swim there. The way they have it arranged with the tunnel entrance/exists on either side adds to the mystery and romance of the place. Linger as long as you need at the ruins taking in the history and then hike south to El Paraiso beach and enjoy the beach bars and scenery.

We travelled from Cancun by coach and our guide took us around. We were surprised by how many ruins there at in Tulum. The walk tour was very informative and then we had about an hour free time to explore or going down to the beach to swim.
The views and scenery are very dramatic and produced great photo ops.
Quite a bit of walking needed but well worth it.

The ruins are very good placed, near the see so you can take nice pictures. Reserve a few hours for this.

Nice setting on the ocean. Large crowds build beginning in late mornings. Many steps to navigate. Mayans were smart people and you can learn about their astronomical knowledge - very impressive.

The combination of ruins, the clear blue sea and the jungle is beautiful!!! Take yourself a camera with good resolution and a lot of memory, you'll want to take a picture every two steps!
