My wife and I stayed 6 nights at Playa Selva in August 2011, after reading all the good reviews on Trip Advisor. There were right on every points, Playa Selva is a wonderful little hotel. We loved it and actually, in its category, it’s closed to perfection. The hotel is very tiny: there are only two houses/bungalows and one bungalow with one room at each floor. We felt at home as soon as we arrived. There is a very convenient open kitchen for the guests, with ice tanks for each room. Besides the owners, Manuela and Mauricio, are extremely nice and helpful, they stay at the hotel with their (very nice) kids, and we felt more like visiting friends rather than hotel guests. In a way, they are the coolest hotel owners you can imagine. We experienced both rooms of the bungalow called La Duna. There were fantastic, furnished with a lot of style: nice wood, nice colors, great beds, exquisite small details. Both had nice terraces with a view other the beach, the room on the second floor being even better. The hotel is right in the middle of the hotel zone, south of Tulum ruins, but the beach is wonderful (and believe me, I know what is a nice tropical beach) and the other hotels around are all small and quiet. Perhaps the only negative point is that light is scarce in the rooms in the evening and reading isn’t easy (but that’s partly due to the fact that the hotel produces its own power). To conclude, Playa Selva has “énormément de charme” as we say in French, a 5 star experience within a tiny, ultra-relaxed, hotel.

My husband and I recently celebrated our honeymoon in Tulum and were very happy with Playa Selva. Owners Mauricio and Manuela were very friendly and available for suggestions on places to eat. They also arranged a snorkeling visit for us that was a (reasonably priced!) highlight to our visit.

We stayed in the two-story cabana, which was just yards from the beach. The decor is simple and clean, and we enjoyed using the outdoor shared kitchen to prepare our breakfasts and morning coffee. Drinking water is provided, and water in the shower/bathroom is saltwater.

Being the jungle, there were a fair amount of mosquitoes, but we were able to combat them with spray and the cabana's two beds had nets. The weather was hot but great for sitting at the beach. Town was accessible by car for less expensive provisions, and we used bikes provided by our hosts to get to restaurants on the strip near the hotel.

Highly recommended for a quiet, casual time in Tulum!

Room Tip: All the cabanas looked nice. Ours was closest to the water, but had no kitchen of its own. We like...

My husband and I recently spent our honeymoon here. We absolutely loved the thatched roof huts and semi private beach! During our stay we used the snorkling equipment supplied by the owners to explore the waters as well as the bicycles to ride to the ruins. Unfortunately, I had gotten sick in Playa Del Carmen and never quite recovered. After hearing about my trouble, the owners graciously took my husband and I to a local clinic and then later to the doctor so that I could get the medicine I needed. Mauricio and Manuella spent a significant amount of their day to help us! Later in the week, the owners had one of their friends give us a ride to a fabulous restaurant. Some of the things that are significant about Playa Selva is the community kitchen (where we made breakfast), its pristine cleaness, and top notch hospitality!

Playa Selva is a truly beautiful and special place to stay. Mauricio and Manuela were wonderful, and we wished we could stay forever. The beach is amazing and only footsteps away. We can't wait to go back.

This is the perfect place for a family vacation. We just returned from 6 days at Playa Selva with my husband and my 3 year old daughter and this was the most relaxing vacation.
We rented the beach house which is perfect for a couple and a child (king bed + twin bed) with the breeze putting us to sleep every night.Waking up to the sound of the waves and singing tropical birds is fabulous. The kitchen is perfect for cooking and has all necessary utensils. I highly recommend you cook as the food prices in the hotels nearby are ridiculously expensive. This was low season and we felt like we had the beach to ourselves, what a treat..
Manuela and Mauricio and their 2 children are amazing and it was great that my daughter could play with their son. I highly recommend the breakfast and the tour of the Sian Kaan with Mauricio, a truly memorable experience.

Thank you again, we will be back soon!

Do yourself a favor- stop researching places in Tulum- and stay here! Its simply amazing! We are 2 moms who needed a break and found ourselves here- the closest thing to heaven!
We stayed in the A-frame bungalow for 3 nights - it was rustic yet refined- thatched roof but cement floor with private bath- 2 beds - one on each level. The view from the second floor is priceless, right out over the dune into the ocean. We had access to a shared kitchen which was perfect for keeping yogurt, fruits, drinks. We then moved to the beach house which had 2 porches, private full kitchen, beautiful private bath. This place would be perfect for a family- as the full kitchen would allow you to cook all your meals. The beach is clean and very safe. We used the bicycles to bike to yoga which was close by- as well as biking to the little crossroads "town" for breakfast and lunch. I wouldn't recommend biking at night as it is too dark- and the drivers are crazy. We rented a car- but you could easily do without- there is a big supermarket right in tulum town- with everything you could need. easy access to taxis.
There is plenty to do- with yoga, snorkeling and the bio-preserve close by. Some vacation you do and do-
but for this vacation we just wanted to be-We swam in the crystal blue water, enjoyed long walks- and just sat under the beach umbrellas- just doing nothing.

The hosts are extremely friendly- and helpful without being overbearing. They truly make your stay enjoyable and memorable.
Since it is located on Tulum beach- all electricity is self generated- so this isn't the place if you want hairdryers, tvs, phones, etc. Cellphone coverage works- internet is spotty- but do you really come on vacation to check your email?? do yourself a favor and completely unplug from the world.

So stop reading all the other reviews- book to stay here- and if you can get in- consider yourself lucky!

We loved every minute- and are dreaming of our return trip!
