We went to el mariachi in tulum one year ago. It was on the main road of tulum city. It was the highlight of our trip. Menu was all in Spanish and was full if locals. Went back tonight and couldn't of been more different. Menu is in English now. Prices doubled. Restaurant was empty. Servers were inattentive and added the tip tO the bill they didn't deserve. We ordered the same dish we had a year ago the seafood mix grill and it couldn't possible be any more bland or overcooked. Was one of the biggest disappointments / changes in a restaurant I have ever witnessed. Very very sad restaurant and experience. Shame on you el mariachi. Hopefully this was due to new owners. It's the only explanation I can come up with for the poor excuse for a restaurant. Stay away at all costs

Most reviews of El Mariachi focus on only one of their properties: their beach restaurant, which is just okay. However, my husband and I have been visiting Tulum for the past 7 years in a row and have found that their second location, El Mariachi in the town of Tulum, is by far the best food anywhere in the region.

The prices are great. We love the filet of fish which absolutely melts in your mouth (and I'm not really a fish person). Ask about their special tamarind sauce. It's to die for on that dish! The veggies are always delicious and the chicken tacos are scrumptious.

The wait staff is friendly and will really give you the personal attention that makes you want to tip and come back over and over (like we always do). The best part is that margaritas are ALWAYS strong (so much so that we usually end up putting on large sombreros and taking ridiculous pictures with staff by the end of the meal.)

We never miss a chance to eat at El Mariachi in town every time we stay on the beach in Tulum, even with a $7-10 cab ride each way. Its totally worth it.

The food is good, the service is great, but the drinks are a little weak (as is typical in Mexico). I recommend the plate that has the vegetables and the different types of meat mixed up (I think it was about 220 pesos for a two person portion). I forget the name of it on the menu, but it was fantastic. They bring it out on a pan and put it over a flame and it stays hot the whole time you are eating from it.

We stopped in at El Mariachi Beach to grab a quick lunch prior to touring the Tulum ruins. We had been tipped off to approach the ruins from the beach road rather than using the main entrance, a winning strategy, as it turned out, that also afforded us a chance to try this inexpensive but well worthwhile palapa-covered eatery.

There was evidently a business meeting of some sort taking place when we arrived, as a long table was occupied by 16 locals, each with a soft drink in front of them. One person would speak at a time, and most of the talking was done by two men with their backs to us. The others could only nod or ask an occasional question.

Since our mapchick map extolled the virtues of the arrachera at El Mariachi Beach, my wife opted for the arrachera steak covered in grilled onions and served with refried beans, rice and salad for $100 MX (about $8.33 US) and I chose an order of 5 arrachera tacos for $80 pesos (about $6.66). The steak for each of our dishes charred nicely on the outside but remained medium rare in the center. Total bill with drinks was $247 MX, or just under $21 US. Not bad for a tasty, filling steak lunch for two.
