Before proceeding, I strongly suggest that the – deservedly few – 'terrible', 'poor' & even 'average' reviews for El Pez be disregarded entirely. Having stayed at El Pez for 14 nights in January 2014, my only conclusion is that the authors of these reviews must surely have stayed somewhere else!

Located on a very beautiful cove, El Pez met and exceeded our expectations as an extremely well-run, friendly, boutique hotel, offering just enough luxury to feel comfortable and looked after, without being overwhelmed. The beach immediately in front of the hotel isn’t fit for swimming as several reviewers point out, but I personally welcomed the absence of bathers, sunloungers & umbrellas marring the perfect view over the cove, the pelican colony & the open sea. The sand/beach in front of the property and along the cove was raked and cleaned, and any debris or rubbish collected daily – sometimes twice daily. Impeccable white sand on an uninterrupted stretch of beach, perfect for walking, sunbathing & swimming are – literally – just around the corner, if you care to walk about five minutes around the cove to the south.

We stayed in Room 3 – a seafront room (upstairs) – which is essentially over and above the bar & restaurant area. Don’t be put off by this – any noise from the restaurant is minimal and can barely be heard above pretty much the only sound you’ll hear during your stay at El Pez – the sea. Regardless, the restaurant & bar close at a perfectly reasonable hour, so there really is no excuse for not getting your perfect night’s sleep.

The entire property is spotless and maintained to the highest order. The bed is wide & comfortable, and the pillows conducive to a restful night’s sleep. The bathroom is light and open plan, and we had no cause for any sort of complaint in two full weeks – everything worked as it should: water temperature and pressure are perfectly adequate, the toilet flushed every time, the room was cleaned thoroughly every day & bottled water replenished. We really couldn’t have asked for better treatment, service or surroundings. Perhaps a little more storage space would have been helpful, though being there for two full weeks we probably had more than the average traveller – maybe we just need to pack lighter…

The wi-fi, which we were able to use and access in our room and throughout much of the hotel, was excellent, good signal strength pretty much constantly.

The restaurant is marvellous, without doubt the best food in Tulum. Having spent two full weeks, we ate in numerous establishments in the vicinity, on the beach & in the pueblo, and El Pez is hands-down the best. It’s not the cheapest in Tulum, but it’s by no means the most expensive either, but you definitely get value for your money. I could happily have eaten the Tulum salad every day! The menu is varied & wildly interesting, some European & Asian influences in there, but with local, fresh ingredients & flavours that render the cuisine unmistakably Mexican. I recommend having at least one meal in the El Pez restaurant – you’ll probably never want to eat anywhere else in Tulum after that!

Breakfast, which is included, is continental style – toast, jam made on the premises, fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, granola (divine, also freshly made on the premises), juice & coffee. I would say it’s the perfect start to the day, but the perfect start comes at around 6:45am, when a flask of hot coffee is delivered to your door and you can sit out on your deck or balcony watching the sunrise over the cove. The only other suggestion I could make is that breakfast could be served a little earlier, being up with the sunrise we were sometimes counting down the minutes to the start of the breakfast service at 8:00am. That said, with a day trip planned and a very early start one morning, the staff was more than happy to provide an early ‘take away’ breakfast for us, and the breakfast timing really is just a suggestion – by no means a complaint.

The Gran Palapa itself is light, inviting and beautifully airy, cooled throughout the day by the gorgeous breeze and, with a happy hour most evenings between 3:00 & 6:00pm, our daily sunset deck cocktail/apéritif was yet another of the several perfect touches to our time at El Pez.

From the moment we arrived, the staff did their utmost to make us feel welcome and, after a short while, El Pez really did begin to feel like our home. I can’t single anyone out, as everyone with whom we came into contact was absolutely capable, professional, friendly and proficient, with the high level of service consistent throughout our entire stay. Gaby, Orfe and Mateo (reception/concierge) were always on hand to provide advice, answer questions, have a chat or even just to greet us with a smile and a wave – even coming & going was a pleasurable experience at El Pez. The bar & restaurant staff are expertly trained, achieving that perfect balance of being attentive yet discreet, and they soon learned our habits, our likes and very quickly were able to anticipate our requirements. So, Antonio, Jaime, Líber, Wilbert, Angel, Armin & Joel, also each deserve recognition and commendation for their marvellous contribution to El Pez being, for us, the ONLY place in Tulum. It really was a very special time for both of us, made all the better by Mateo and his team.

I would return to and recommend El Pez without hesitation. Currently, it’s ranked Tripadvisor #5 in Tulum – it most certainly deserves to be #1.

Room Tip: Definitely recommend a sea front king, upstairs.

We stayed at El Pez for a week in march and loved everything about it! We felt right at home from the start and loved our room, that was big enough for two adults and two children with too many bags. The room was clean and beds and pillows great. We especially loved our porch with two chairs and a sunbed where we could relax and where we had coffe (juice for the kids) every morning (delivered to our room, wonderful!)The pool is small but we were alone in most times and it fullfilled our needs by far. The main building is beautiful decorated and the continental breakfast is great! Like other people has written here is the granola so tasty, i wish i had gotten the recepie. All other meals that we had in the resturant were also great. The staff is wonderful and very serviceminded. Our girls loved the consegieners who were very helpful with everything we needed. The location of the hotel is great even though the beach is not as fantastic as further down along the beach. However as a guest at El Pez you can visit the sisterhotels La Zebra and Mezzanine- both very welcoming when we visited them for a few hours. In short- we love El Pez and we will go back there every time we go to Mexico!

I booked El Pez last minute for me and my sister-in-law, and we were given the last room available (room 2). I had high expectations because of the stellar reviews on TA; El Pez is even better than the reviews. The room has a very comfortable bed (haven't slept so well in months) and a deck with a partial view of the ocean. I think every room has a full ocean view except room 2 and the room next door. The deck door has a screen, so every night we fell asleep to the sound of the ocean. Paradise.

The restaurant at El Pez exceeded every one of my expectations. Fresh produce and seafood with incredible flavor, and plating I haven't seen the likes of since dining at on20 in Hartford, CT (look it up and you'll see what I mean). We ate there for breakfast every day, and lunch/dinner 2x. We could have eaten there every day.

For the reviews that say how helpful and attentive Mateo and the staff were -- totally true. Since this trip was last minute, I didn't plan a thing. I told Mateo we were interested in ruins and cenotes and he took care of everything (ask for Jorge to take you to Sac Actun - my favorite part of the trip). Everyone knew our names and remembered the foods we like. I've been to nice places in the US and have never felt so welcomed.

Coming to Tulum and El Pez was the best decision I've made in a long time. You won't regret it!

All rooms face the water...staff is so friendly and attentive(rare in Tulum) and they just want to make your stay pleasant.
The hotel is a bit off the strip of other hotels so it has a more private feel. We loved it.

Room Tip: I would select a room on the lower floor so you can walk right out to the water

My mother and I stayed here for a week and it was probably our best vacation ever- and I am a tough judge. We were immediately greeted with cocktails on arrival and escorted to a beautiful room where all we could hear was the crashing of waves on the sand. (We stayed in room 10- one of the upper level rooms) We spent each morning and the end of each evening on our beautiful private balcony catching a quinceanera on the beach one morning and watching local (as well as avian) fishers every morning. We loved that the beach was not closed to local people helping to minimize that tourist in a bubble feeling that can often occur with tropical vacations. To top it off the chef made me my favorite dessert (Tres Leches) on request- totally complimentary. We hope to return someday and we can't imagine staying in a better place!

Room Tip: Would recommend a top level room.

El Pez at Turtle Cove is a jewel in Tulum's crown for sure. My husband and I had a fabulous week there with our teenage daughter and her friend. At arrival, they make you feel as though you have found a home away from home.

LOCATION is fab! Right in the middle of town,(very close walk into the little town of Tulum), and the more beach/bar/restaurant area. Beautiful and short or long walk (you choose) to less rocky beaches (beach at Turtle Cove is rocky but unique, fabulous and irreplaceable), we love to swim but wouldn't trade the view of turtle cove for a swimmable beach!!!). We walked into the little town and rented bikes for the week ($10USD each per day) so that we could bike to different beach clubs and the ruins during the day. I wouldn't suggest biking at night but the taxi service is extremely reasonable, nice, and constant.

ROOMS are very nice. We stayed in both a luxury beach cabana and luxury sea view. Both are nice and I honestly would not care what room I had next stay. Any comments about water pressure, temp, etc. not an issue. Tulum is not Los Angeles, however, so if you are looking for AC, bathtubs, jacuzzis, city-wide pesticide spraying, etc just don't come to Tulum in general....it is not for you.

Restaurant at El Pez is great. Service is great. Staff will remember your preferences and treat you like family. We ventured out for lunches and dinners almost every night and didn't have a bad meal anywhere in Tulum. That's part of why you come! It is very European in the way of trying out a hotel's beach club, restaurant, etc. It is part of the fun. Fabulous concierge Mateo will, in fact, hook you up at other places if you ask :) Everyone is happy to see you at La Zebra, Casa Banana, Ziggy Beach, Mezzanine...etc. Just tell them Mateo sent you :)

Mateo also hooked us up with some great tours. Just ask!!! We did a fabulous tour of Akumal and the cenotes which is a must if you are bothering to come down here. Mateo also sent us out with a very educated Mayan tour guide to visit the ruins, lagoons, and cenotes of Sian Ka'an. Octavio was amazing. Just do it.

Can't wait to go back. Gaby, Mateo, Armin, et all made it such a memorable stay. Tell your friends but not ALL your friends.....want to keep Tulum and El Pez a secret!!! It's that good.
