“Heaven in El Pez”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

My longtime boyfriend and I recently stayed at El Pez. It was truly a heavenly experience. We had a suite which opened right onto the sea, slept with the sound of the ocean at night and woke up to the sun rising on the ocean in the morning. The staff was incredibly kind and enthusiastic. Every morning a basket of coffee or tea is left at your door. The breakfast includes fresh fruit, yogurt, bread and granola. The restaurant for dinner was 5 star. Only there are a few things you should know. The hotel is set in a beautiful little cove called Turtle Cove, presumably because turtles live there. It's slightly rockier and more seaweed than the beach just 5 minutes walking minutes north where you will find long stretches of white sand. I liked Turtle Cove for it's liveliness though... daily there would be local fisherman out fishing. The hotel is about a 15 minute bike ride to the ruins. The hotel does not have AC but the fan is powerful and with the screen open we were quite comfortable. Also our room did not have a fully enclosed bathroom. The bathroom was right behind the bed with a 2/3 wall... fine for us but may be an issue for some.

Dear Desertgirle,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a beautiful review of El Pez.

Not having A/C gives you the oportunity to sleep with the amazing sound of the waves and feel the fresh breeze of Tulum. We are really happy that you enjoyed that detail.

We stayed in the Beach House and it was amazing! Just a few steps into the ocean from the large common room and fully equipped kitchen. Private loungers and hammocks add a wonderful touch. It is great for either a large or small group. The hotel helped arrange a private chef for us. We went to the grocery and literally dined in house most of the stay. However, Armeene was there to refill any of our needs from the hotel restaurant and bar. The layout of the house is perfect allowing for a retreat for couples or individuals to their own private rooms all with ensuite bathrooms. The décor is also simple, and elegant, also perfect for the setting, modern but authentic. The two ground floor rooms also have a pullout bed - perfect for families where needed. The staff was amazing, Mateo, Armeene, John, Eric, Iris, and Andrea were all super helpful and friendly. We were made to feel right at home which is exactly what each of them said their goal was. The beach and cove are stunning. It is true that the cove does have some rocks in the ocean so not as suited for swimming as other locations, but just around the corner (2 minute walk on the beach) begins the 7 miles of stunning Tulum beaches - perfect swimming. We loved being on the cove, watching the fisherman, and having a virtually private island complete with wonderful moon views at night. We tried to be mindful and keep lights down for the hatching sea turtles. All in all this was the perfect spot. We will be back!

Room Tip: Rooms on the bottom floor of the house are slightly larger and may be less quiet from the noise of t...

Not the first time Ive been in Mexico but the first time I've visited the Yucatan Peninsula, Tulum is gorgeous! Beaches are amazing, the people are super friendly, and the food is SPECTACULAR. But nothing could have sealed the deal like staying at "EL PEZ"
"El Pez" is like nothing I've ever experienced, Super Clean, awesome location, and the staff are what set this place apart. Everybody is super helpful but a special shout out goes to Antonio, Armen, Joel, who were always willing to help making sure our trip was memorable. Being there for the first time we weren't always sure what to do and most importantly who to believe when it comes to daily activities, sight- seeing, and most importantly where to eat.
I will forever be in gratitude to Joel and Antonio because they recoommended a seafood resturant known as the "Camillo" which has the BEST seafood I've ever had, the freshest, most authentic you can find in Tulum.
Andrea who works at the front was also super helpful in recommending a taxi driver by the name of Jorge who took us sightseeing to such landmarks as Chichén Itzá, a few Cenotes, as well as a colonial town with amazing food named Valladolid, Yucatán.
Overall me and my new wife feel honored and get excited just thinking about our honeymoon in Tulum Mexico, but because of El Pez and Antonio, Joel, Armin, and Andrea as well as Jorge this trip was AWESOME!
Until the next time (and there will definetly be a next time) keep doing what you do,appreciate and value your employees, because of them we will never forget EL PEZ.

After a crazy, hectic, exciting city break in Havana, Cuba, my gf and I needed a place to chill. I had high hopes for El Pez, based on the fantastic reviews and I wasn't disappointed. Great staff, views, food and drinks, excellent clean rooms and a really lovely atmosphere all round. Ask Mateo or the front desk to book 4 hours with Martin Chi, a local taxi driver/guide..excellent English, super friendly, totally trustworthy - he'll take you wherever you want. He took us to Akumal, where you can swim with sea turtles, and a cool underground cenote that big tour groups don't go too (Cenote Dos Ojos). He then helped us buy tequila from a store in town and dropped is at a restaurant in town. Really top guy.

El Pez was everything my boyfriend and I could have hoped for: great location (between the center of town, where the locals hang, and the wooded jungle area, replete with hotels and higher-end restaurants); superb staff (hi, Mateo, John, Wilburt, Antonio, Joel, and Jaime!); well-designed rooms right on the water; delicious breakfast (included); awesome happy hour; bikes for rent; and affordable (we got an awesome rate during rainy season -- it didn't rain). The vibe was just right, and we felt like we got a real sense of the town and its inhabitants rather than a more touristy perspective we may have found had we stayed at a larger resort. We didn't want to leave, and can't wait to go back. Would recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: We stayed in a luxury cabana on the water. But really, you can't go wrong. Just ask for a view!

One of the best experiences imaginable. My girlfriend set this trip up for us and even though we both knew El Pez would be great, our expectations were shattered beyond belief. At what other place, would you leave by hugging the staff in appreciation for their kindness and graciousness? Never have I felt so connected to the people of an establishment. We didn't want to say goodbye to Mateo, Joell, Antonio, Wilbert, Jaime, John, Armin – they were all so helpful! The location is perfectly split along the coast of Tulum, with plenty of wonderful food and beach options nearby. The rooms were extremely clean ALWAYS and the views were exceptional. And by the way, it doesn't hurt that the food and drinks are delicious as well. Renting bikes and going into town was made easy by the staff and was also a very easy, pleasurable experience. If you're looking for a romantic place to be where the value is truly maximized – and if you're looking for the best low-key alternative to the manic resort-style vacationing – please, PLEASE go to El Pez.

My husband and I stayed here in June for 2 nights. The hotel is small and cozy with a great lounge area in the lobby right next to the bar and restaurant. Our room was very clean, and the bed comfortable. The shower/bathroom situation was different - there's no 'room' with a door on it. But, being that it was just the two of us - that was no an issue. There is no air conditioning which my husband was very concerned about, but we opened the windows (with mosquito screens) and the breeze kept us comfortable enough. Our room had a little balcony that gave great views of the ocean. The breakfast included with our room was - DELICIOUS! By far the best I've had in all my travels. Service was fast and friendly. Most of the staff spoke English well enough - and we spoke just enough Spanish to get around. This hotel is at the very beginning of the strand of hotels that make up the 'beach' side of Tulum. It's outside of Tulum pueblo. There was plenty of space to park our rental jeep - which we only needed because we were traveling around several places in Mexico. If you are just staying in Tulum - rent a BIKE. That's all you need. There are many great restaurants up and down both sides of the street. The wi-fi worked well enough to use Skype to call our son - and to check e-mail and such. There were electrical outlets in the room for charging devices - but please be conservative! This area of Tulum is off of the power grid and they make all their own electricity with solar panels or windmills. The pool is also very nice - watch out for the Iguana that lives in between some of the rock by the pool. He's pretty cool! I would say - the beach right in front of the hotel isn't great for swimming - but go down the road a bit and there's great areas for getting in the water. Overall fantastic place - would go back!

Room Tip: Try to get one of the bungalows - more private and larger rooms. But, the other rooms are nice as w...
