Sombras del Viento was beyond our expectations. The location and the house are amazing. We had plenty of room and privacy as there are 3 floors and the bedrooms are situated on each. The family with small children took the suite with two bedrooms on the ground level. There was another one bedroom suite on the ground level, two bedrooms including a master on the main level and two bedrooms on the top level which included a game room. The two ground floor suites each had a small kitchen and living area. We didn't really use the game room as we had great weather and spent our days outside.
The bathrooms were all modern and the daily housekeeper kept everything clean.
We spent most of our time on the beautiful beach that is just in front of the villa. There is a reef which protects the bay so the water is calm and there are no breakers. The water is very clear and you can see the bottom almost the whole way to the reef. Our children spent hours playing with sand toys and the water. We used the available kayaks and snorkeled almost everyday. Lots of fish and beautiful coral. Several people saw sea turtles also.
The furnishings are nice and comfortable and appropriate for a beach house. The artwork was interesting and attractive. The beds were comfortable and the bed linens were nice.
Our mornings started with a fabulous breakfast cooked by the two chefs, Rolando and Jorge. We then went down to the beach where the groundskeeper, Ricardo, brought us fresh coconuts with a straw for refreshment. After a morning of sunning and kayaking, we headed back upstairs for lunch. All the food was fresh and delicious. We ate in restaurants three times and, although good, the food did not compare to what Rolando and Jorge made. Fresh salsa and guacamole with almost every meal. The best ceviche I have ever tasted.
We did not rent a car and used transportation services for short day trips. The concierges were instrumental in helping us to arrange outings and checking several times to make sure our stay was fabulous. We were made to feel like valued guests and friends.
My only caveat is that if you do not have a car, make sure you take enough cash for services. There are no ATMS or banks readily available and I almost ran out of cash. The chefs do all the shopping as well as cook although I reimbursed the cost of the food and drink. There is a very small convenience store down the street, but it carries mainly drinks and snacks.
Two treats were arranged through the concierge. Massage therapists came with their table and we all had massages next to the beach. For a birthday celebration, a Mariachi band came by and serenaded us for almost an hour. It was delightful!
I think Sombras and the location spoiled us and it will be difficult to go anywhere else in the Yucatan. I would highly recommend it for a family vacation.
