“Highlight of our Tulum visit”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

Sian Ka'an is a maginficent nature preserve--broad lagoons, a variety of birds, alligators slithering in the grasses, manatees--and the best way to see it is with Community Tours. As the name suggests, the tours are run by the Mayan community, and they put their heart and soul into the experience.

You start a few minutes down the road (at the Muyil ruins), and don't have to take the bone-jarring trip to Port Allen that others rightly complained about. You spend several hours traveling around the preserve by boat with a knowledgeable guide. The best part was 45 minutes floating down a canal, as peaceful as meditating. Lunch is a wonderfully prepared Yucatan meal. The ruins at Muyil don't compare with Coba or Tulum, but the guide brings them to life.

All and all, it's a great day--the highlight of a fantastic visit to Tulum.

“A fantastic day with lots of great feelings”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

We went there on a full day tour in December. Even though the day started badly, they forgot to pick us up. We had to take a taxi down to Muyil to join the group, they paid for the taxi.
We had a fantastic day, a small group of 8 people and the guide Cesar. We started in their office in Muyil, with lots of interesting information about the project and the local people and of course about the rainforest. We learnt that people working for the project really were balls of fire.
The tour included a boat ride on the lagoon and into small canals dug by the Mayan to reach access to the sea. On one part of the canals we were floating downstreams, it was a fantastic experience, the water was so pleasant and warm. We also saw Mayan ruins in the jungle and all the time we got a lot of information from Cesar who was a five-star guide.
The lunch ended the tour and then we went back to Tulum. We can really recommend this tour!

“Great staff, great food and the most relaxing day in Tulum”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

From the beginning my experience was fantastic. The communication from Jorge in the office was helpful, polite and efficient. Once we were in the mini van to the destination, our tour guide was also very friendly, extremely knowledgeable and able to translate into three different languages if needed. He is from the local Myan community and was able to keep us entertained and interested with his facts and knowledge of local Myan culture and ceremonies, bee keeping, local chewing gum manufacture in his local community, the local wildlfe and even animal survival tactics! There seemed to be little this guy didn´t know. The trip was well organised from begining to end, the buses and boats were always there to await our arrival and effortlessly move us along from place to place. The float down the river was the best part for me, the water was so clean and clear. We saw beautiful species of butterflies, a baby crocodile, fishes in the mangroves and various bird species. To top it off the ladies at the restaurant served us the best meal I have had yet in Tulum, a traitional Myan dish of fish steamed in banana leaf with avocado, rice, beans and some very spicy delicious salsa with nachos. I would recomend this tour operator for all of its tours based on the high level of professionalism and the standard of service I received. Usually most of the reviews I take the time to write are negative but this time it feels good share one of the more positive experiences with fellow trip advisors. I hope you enjoy Tulum.

“Mixed feeling”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

The positive was:
- Good communication: this organization at least replies to e-mail (unlike Cesiak) and calls you on your mobile phone.
- They pick you up and drop you wherever you live close to Tulum (although, being the one leaving the further, I had a long day...).
- The food was very decent.
- They chose a visit of sian Ka'an which is close to Tulum.
- Floating down the stream in the mangrove, a unique experience.
- The guide was very good for the visit of the small Muyil ruins.
The less good:
- After the visit of Muyil, our guide seems completely uninterested, and stopped explaining / sharing. It was especially frustrating when we were swimming / floating down the river. He was just enjoying himself and not keen on answering any question. Complete contrast with the first part of the day, as if his job was done and he was off!
- On the way back from the floating experience, we had to wait a really long time, under the sun (no shade, no water) for the boat to come back and pick-us up.
Overall, without being picky, I think what could have been a fantastic experience turned up to be just a mix bag... Pity.

“Fantastic Bird Watching”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

We took a group of 5 adults on the Sian Ka'an Community Birding and Natural History tour. It was nothing short of amazing. Our guide Alberto was excellent. We saw 44 unique species of birds in a 4 hour walk. Including a flock of 18 Toucans. The tour started near Muyil ruins which makes it very easy to get to if you drive yourself or they will pick you up. Its totally worth the 6 am start. The tour starts out walking down a small dirt road into the jungle. Then we walked through a small mayan village where we not only saw lots of birds but Alberto told us about the culture and his experiences growing up. Priceless! The tour finishes in the Muyil archaeological site with a walk across a board walk through the reserve. We wrapped up at the lagoon which was wonderful to see. Finally a van took us back to the Sian Ka'an tour location across from Muyil.

We just can't say enough about how great Alberto was. Excellent bird knowledge, great english, and a passion for the natural area. This was our final tour after a two week stay in the Tulum area. Would definitely use Sian Ka'an community tours for anything in the reserve. I called to book and then stopped in the office. Affordable and very easy to do business with and I like supporting a company that gives back.
