As someone who relies heavily on others trip advisor reviews, I feel I should write an honest description of our experience here, and not leave anything out.
We arrived in what appeared to be a very uncomfortable back street to literally a large metal gate with no signs; no people, and no idea where the entrance to this property was. We sat in our taxi for 15 minutes debating how to even contact the property to cancel our reservation as we felt uneasy right away. It was only until two men in the street (who happened to have keys to this large gate?!) opened it and returned with a woman who said she was the owner of Petit Agave and had been waiting for us to arrive. We told her this was not what we had expected and were going to cancel, but she insisted we come inside to show us the apartment, which we agreed upon, and reluctantly stayed the one night as we had just endured a long flight. I also asked her how any guest was expected to know where to go once arriving to the address with absolutely no signage or inclination this was even correct, to which she replied she walked out the front every few minutes to see if we had arrived. This was the first alarm bell.
The apartment itself is nice. Three levels, and yes you do have the apartment to yourself, with others next door sharing the same courtyards to their rooms. The host was friendly and spoke English which was comforting. HOWEVER, expect to pay in cash or you'll need to walk to an office blocks away to use a credit card, not ideal. Despite being aesthetically nice, it is not in a safe and comfortable area. Yes it is close to 5th Avenue and during the day perhaps you could walk around, but absolutely not at night. The shower was a spray of water without a shower head, (see picture) with hot water being debatable. An example would be a toy water pistol, without exaggeration. Ladies, don't even bother trying to wash your hair- it's not going to happen.
In the morning, we were woken with literally pounding on the downstairs glass door by a woman who spoke zero English who we thought might have been housekeeping, (as we were told this would be the case during the day), but this was at 8:15am, and she was not housekeeping!! She proceeded to translate using her phone that we needed to have our luggage out of the room & in their office during the day, when previously we had asked to leave it locked in the apartment to go explore the local beaches. So we were woken up and basically told we needed to be out then and there, when I'm certain there was no check out time before 9am! The host had told us whenever was fine, and to leave the key on the bench top when we left. She also said to make it our home, which we had, and had done some handwashing as we were traveling through many locations, so all of our wet washing - which we intended to leave on the rooftop in the sun was now wet in our luggage as we weren't able to remain in the property for it to dry. We also waited for someone to return to the apartment at the time she said she would retrieve our bags to take to the office for over half an hour. We tried to contact the number on the business card and reached a man who also didn't speak English, and no answer on the office phone.
After waiting half an hour we had to drag our large suitcases ACROSS TRAFFIC 3 blocks to an "office", also with no signage, and no sign of the host. We had no choice but to leave our belongings here with people we hadn't seen before while we went for lunch, only to return to a locked gate and having to physically yell out IN THE STREET for someone to come and let us in for over 10 minutes. We were beyond frustrated and furious at this stage.
We speak a little Spanish so language was not the only barrier, but through all of this major miscommunication and messing around, we would NEVER stay here again. Be aware of what you are booking. We travel a lot and have not experienced this kind of accommodation stress; describing this as a nightmare is an understatement. On paper, the pictures of the apartment are nice, and it's close to everything, but I HIGHLY recommended you do not stay here.
I stayed at Petit Agave for 9 nights. The property is unique as each unit is a small. 3 story town home. The buildings are made very well with attention to detail and the rooftop jaccuzi for each room is a nice touch. The Wi-Fi is pumping at 20 megs and there is full cable as well. Daily cleaning was great also. Highly recommended!
The Petite Agave condo was a wonderful place to stay. It is within a short walk to the beach, restaurants, shopping and nightlife while staying just outside of the touristy area. The condo itself is on a quiet street with friendly locals. It has 3 floors, the first floor has a kitchen, small living space with fold out couch bed and small bathroom. The second floor has a large bathroom with shower and 1 bedroom with a small balcony. There is also a roof top patio with jacuzzi tub. It's a really nice, clean space and well decorated. The only issue that I could see being a problem is for people travelling with small children is that the stairs have no railing.
The owner Pedro was nice and very accommodating. His English is basic but he brought a friend along who spoke English perfectly to meet us.
All in all a great experience. I would stay there again.
